It's funny, the longer I keep a saltwater reef aquarium (Going on 20 years now) the less I have any desire to get into the real ocean. ...and it ain't the big bitey things that really scare me, it's the itty bitty things that if they look at you funny you've got 20 minutes to tell your loved ones good bye that scare me...  |

I used to be a water baby.
Until I was snorkeling off the coast of Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia and swam over a bed of kelp reaching up from the dark depths reaching for me to pull me down to Davy Jones locker. Age 9
Until I saw a "passle" of snakes in the sea where I was was swimming in the sea off the Malaysian coast. Age 15
Until I saw a couple of what I thought were catfish swimming around my legs standing in the Gulf of Mexico off Longboat Key, FL. I was on vacation and a local told me later they were baby shark. Age 38
Until I was snorkeling off the coast near Barcelona, Spain.I'd been told there were no sharks in the Mediterranean. They lied. Age 44.
That's the last time I've been in the sea deeper than my ankles.

I tell people to swim in the lake, but fish in the ocean.
I've inadvertently caught a few sharks of various types, as they either wanted my bait, or they wanted the fish that initially ate my bait. I was fishing overnight in Buzzard's Bay (MA/RI coast) one night, hunting for stripers. It was pitch black, and we were backed in near a large formation of rocks, where the big stripers like to hide and hunt their prey. Well, I ditched my usual mono leader for a wire leader that evening. I was floating some chunked fish when my line started pulling off furiously. I dropped the bail and started the fight. Pretty soon, I could tell from the darting style that it wasn't a trophy striper on the line. After a long fight, I got it close to the boat. My friend got the spotlight on it just long enough to see a pretty large sand tiger shark shake violently and snap the line right off where the leader was attached. Frankly, I was cool with that. I didn't want him/her in the boat with me anyway. If it didn't snap the line, I'd have probably cut it anyway. I wasn't reaching in there to try to get my leader/hook back no matter what, so I'm pleased that it ended how it did.
I'll never stop fishing the ocean, though. Nothing better than a seafood dinner that was still swimming 12 hours ago.

It's amazing how big a pair of five foot barracuda look when snorkeling off Sand Key (below Key West), and you turn around, and they are right behind you. Really cute too,  I was told they are just naturally curious... but so are stalkers. |

Not everywhere...  When I was working in west Africa, these guys were in the fresh water, but the saltwater had dolphins and pretty fish and stuff... I stuck to the ocean...  |

73 years ago , yesterday The U.S.S. Indianapolis was torpedoed.
Today, was just the first of 3 days in the water.
They, the infamous, "THEY", left us in the water with multiple sharks of variable, and amazing size.
When a pod of killer whales moved into the area they, again, pulled us out right quick.
Just training, doncha know.

Living on Cape Cod, can be a task! I GO EVERY DAY from May to Sept. to swim in the ocean. That's one reason I live here! Go out about neck deep, swim around , play etc for about 10 minutes each day after work . Most the time its on the Sound side. YES! I DO WORRY ABOUT SHARKS! Not just the great white but those smaller blue sharks , and now those dam stinging little jellies showing up. Way to many seals on the Cape!  But, they are protected However, you have NO chance if a hungry shark wants you!  |

LOL ! True...when I did those dives in the late 90's the "feeder" usually only wore a chain mail sleeve on the arm that did the feeding....things may have changed due to "incidents" the public may not be informed about regarding some type of incidents.....one of the guys I dove with had his air supply lines opened up by a little nip from a passing shark....a little buddy breathing and a premature trip back to the surface and the waiting boat....that was the ONLY "event" I ever witnessed on the shark dives....got bumped and nudged by several as they passed by on the way to the food but nothing more than that...... Another little story regarding barracudas....have seen many in the 3-5' range up close....I use to hang a aluminum bottle opener from my BCD to use to open beverages, if necessary, after diving....could never figure out why I seemed to have the most barracuda following me around on my dives leaving the other divers pretty much alone.....talked to the Divemaster of the boat and he told me cudas are naturally very curious creatures and they probably saw my bottle opener flickering in the water like a fish lure and just wanted to get up close to see just what the heck that shiny thing was hanging off my chest.....removed it right after that and the cudas treated me pretty much like everyone else....  |
