Had some trash in the truck for week or so, and went to the dump today. I can’t begin to count the amount of landfills I’ve been to. Probably since the age of 8. Emptied a truck bed or trailer many times. Today was a first. The lady at the booth asked if I had a hi-vis vest and hard hat ? Uh....no, just got some tree limbs, old tv, outdoor furniture, and some sun dried dog poop. Well, evidently a new rule has been implemented. Before you get out you have to look like this. A zen-like peace came over me I felt so immune from death at this moment .

You do look rather zen-like peaceful in that photo. That high viz stuff just makes you an easier target for the dozer operator.

Safety fanatics suck.
There's safety, and there's eyewash and BS.
I suppose the hard hat is for after you throw your trash as high as you can, then run underneath it to see if it can hit you in the head.
And the high viz vest is to scare the other trash from attacking you.
Question: Did they happen to be selling hi viz vests and hard hats?

you know I saw him out of the corner of my eye coming full speed at me. My new apparel gave me Superhuman capabilities and I was out of their with my cat-like reflexes. As I'm returning to pay I think about what I might say to the lady in the booth. Surely it was her idea, and I'm going to give her a piece of my mind ! I start talking to her about the new rules. No kids less than 16, gear on if you are out of the vehicle. (I think I broke corporate rule 114-b, by removing it before I paid her) And then I realize she's not wearing her usual clothing. Sitting inside a concrete block shack she also is required to have the gear on also.

I probably should have stopped while I was ahead. Those are definitely more in keeping with the Serk we all know and love. I think we should extend the challenge to the entire membership, I'm sure my head brother won't mind.

When I went to the dump this past summer (which was probably the first time because I think I would've remembered the SMELL, almost knocked me over!!), I had to wear these items too!
If I remember I had to buy the vest, $1 I think, and returned the hard hat when leaving. You wonder what kind of hygiene is done from one customer to the next?
Buying the vest worked out well for me. I kept it in my truck, in case I needed to go back (God forbid) but had to use it for a flag on some excessively long poles I hauled in my trailer.
(10' trailer, 25' poles. Yea, they stuck way out!)

They don’t have a rule like u at the dump I go to ..... yet. They don’t have such rules at the scrap yard I visited recently either. I did think about the wisdom of having a hard hat while I was at the scrap yard. When the grapple operator hoisted that Chevy suburban up over the top of that 40 feet tall pile of junk vehicles that I was standing beside. I thought, it would be wise to have a hard hat on while out here, but I am not sure a hard hat would be much protection if some of the junk I threw inside that Suburban decides to fall. I walked back in front of my truck and waited until the operator set the Suburban down. Then I went back to my trailer and picked up my tie downs.
I don’t see the need for hard hats at the dump........but with all the texting and such these days and the dozers in operation at the dump......well, I still don’t see a hard hat as protection there. I must be missing something.

I remember thinking in the steel mill, if that coil of steel on the overhead crane fell on me, my hard had and steel toes are just going to make a harder job for the mortician. But then, I don't care if he's Houdini, that's not going to be an open casket anyway.
On balance though, the hat and toes was a good idea at the steel mill, where many things could fall on you less lethal than a coil of steel. But at the dump?
I am lead to believe that since I left the mills (around 1980) (and many other work-sights), all the workers are in vests of various colors, after the fashion of an aircraft carrier flight deck. How fashionable (I understand the flight deck).
I remember mill guys asking why I was wearing a white hat which was reserved for only supervisors and foremen. My answer was, I'm not a mill employee, I'm an independent contractor. (And you had less chance of someone screwing with you in a white hat).
We didn't have OSHA in the mills back in my day. I did get sent home for riding the elevated (and covered) conveyor belts up long long inclines, as a safety violation one day. It beat the hell out of walking up the skinny catwalks. In ten summers of climbing, chipping and painting high steel, I never wore a harness or belt either. As I recall, I never fell to my death.
My brother the carpenter foremen told me by the time he retired, the safety people and requirements were the single biggest impediment to getting any job done in the mills.
Let's not forget that these rules are implemented by people the voters put in power.
All OSHA and other legion of workplace safety rules are thought up and implemented by career civil servant regulators, not elected officials.

thankfully our dump is County owned/run. I was there just last weekend, leaving behind the top 16 feet of three trees. Was a fun visit. got to talk to several others at the wood/tree area. No requirement for vest nor hard hats yet. We have several areas, household stuff, metal stuff, appliances stuff, grass, and wood. Just got to go where they tell you. AND only ones who wear visible vest/hard hats are the equipment operators.

I've only been to my dump a couple times. I was surprised to find a small group of fellows just hanging out to see if you were throwing away anything they might want. I guess that's cheap entertainment. Hey honey, check out this love seat.... it's only been puked on a few times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEJEfHOs7F0
