Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: August 30, 2018, 06:37:44 PM »

I’m taxing my recollector muscle here, but near as I can recall from more than half a century ago, we had all members of our sports teams dress-out for home games, but only the better jocks went to ‘away’ games… the so-called traveling squad… Well, when it comes to biker treks, there are those who ride to Dairy Queens, restaurants, or bars and those who ‘travel’… I’m in the company of some mighty fine travelers, most of whom would also qualify as all-stars!

True to form, I nearly didn’t make it! I made the show-up and started out with the group all right, but on the first two days, as the mid-afternoon temps climbed into the stratosphere, my enthusiasm, energy, and stamina declined proportionately… I was wilting like a week-old prom corsage! That has become common-place, even typical, for this vintage road warrior, and it was the major drawback to me even making a group ride out to Colorado. All that has changed now!  But first…

We’d arranged for two meet-ups so our members from several states could all converge and become one unit… Good idea and it did work out. We did manage to mis-coordinate the timing on the very first meet-up, however, so the second was also an hour late, as the time from the first was never made up… No problem, though, at least nobody admitted to having a nerve jangled due to this…

Paul Mull (Wimp) escorted SmokinJoe, Lucky13, and yours truly to the first hook-up… He never admitted it, but I strongly suspect he had been deputized to make certain we actually exited the county and didn’t double back. Following breakfast after the link-up, he returned to Anderson County to deliver the happy news to one and all, while the now five of us continued on to the second meet-up. MitchO and Troutdude had just joined us…

The first hook-up where MitchO & Troutdude joined us

The second hook-up swelled our ranks to eight… and the traveling squad was complete (SmokinJoe took the picture).

We got seriously underway after a wee bit of glad-handing and back-slapping and a bit more chow (necessary ballast, you see) and the effects of nature began to work on this trekker in earnest. Both of those first two days, mid-day would see the start down the path that would leave me pooped and drained by journey’s end…

First night in Mount Vernon, Il.

Mitch led us both of the first two days… He made a big hit with me right-off, when he stopped for breakfast at a Huddle House in Illinois… and I had grits! I was mighty happy about that, too… it could be a while before I find another mess…

By the time we stopped at this roadside attraction on the second day, I was already too far gone to walk over and read the information on the sign, but I was told that it informed the reader that what was behind the sign is a hole in the rock wall… That more than satisfied any remaining curiosity I might have had left…

In keeping with our ‘let’s take the scenic route’ theme, we rode down a country road currently being repaved… After a couple of miles of loose gravel, we came upon the ‘tar truck’ doing its thing, so we did a U-turn and retraced our route back out…

Mitch not only did a monster job of herding cats, selecting the best roads available, and making an otherwise rather boring ride into a very enjoyable one, he also really impressed me when he displayed superior leadership skills… He somehow got Joe to lead on the stretch where we encountered all the gravel and tar and eventually have to do a U-turn… so Joe got all the blame! Mitch just smiled and maintained his usual stoic pose…

So we could also claim a nautical aspect to our trip, we took a ferry across the Illinois River…

Then it was on to St. Joseph, MO, for the night at a motel where SmokinJoe had stayed previously… Nice place, the owner and his wife were most personable and friendly… and the owner also came out with a cold beer for each of us! Hard to not like hospitality like that!!! There was even some killer BBQ just across the road from our motel… All in all, things worked out well enough to make that hot, humid ride there seem very much worth the effort.

Mike,

Yep, I got a pic of those elk also (there were actually four)… More about that in the next installment.

Paul,

Those are definitely on our 'To-Do Lists'... right behind staying upright and off the pavement! No near misses so far, but one of our number has learned about staying hydrated... All better now, and lesson learned... A simply amazing group of folks to ride with and hang-out with... Lots of laughs, and a couple of things to poke fun about at future gatherings... Yeah, pretty typical stuff!

Rob,

Thanks, my friend... It did... finally! Those first two days were doozies, though! More about the change we encountered in the next installment, but for now... things are definitely looking up! Yes, an 'epic adventure' is looking more like an accurate description with each passing day.

Not only has there been no blood shed (so far), everybody is getting along great! Seasoned riders all, so no big surprise there... Thanks to Mitch and his 'local roads' route, he saved us from the drudgery of slab work most of the way out here. I've said it before, but it bears repeating here... I really would rather be lucky than good!

Hard to imagine you having a rough go of it my friend. Don't you have one of those water cooler vests or something? I would think in this kind of heat, you might ought to pace yourself. Don't compare your endurance with guys 15 years younger than you. Don't make me get on my bike and come show you how it's done. Trout Dude, take care of that old man. Y'all have a great ride. I'm jealous.

John,

Bighead has it nailed two replies down... Ol' Gordon Brooks (Lucky13) himself, just being himself! Yeah, it has been a great ride so far... except as noted by you and me... Still, I'm mighty glad I made this ride, and that I've been able to get to know a couple in our group better. All are high quality folks, and it is a genuine pleasure to share adventure with each one! I'd love to have you join any ride I was on! You are not only a character, you have huge character, something that counts with this dude...

Gary!

Good to hear from you!!! Oh, it's not so hard for me to imagine... I've been struggling with heat for as long as I've been riding. No vest or other 'appliance' to combat that annual vexation, but I have stumbled upon something that works better than anything else I've tried... an Armachila shirt sold by Duluth Trading. Feel free to jump on your Valk any ol' time and join up with us!!!

Barry,

You know him well, all right! Playful cuss, and usually up to something... One of the very best people I know, though, and he's a pleasure and a treasure to travel with... Come to think of it, all seven of my companions pretty well fit into the same category!!!

I just passed thru St Jo a few days ago.  Well I'm guessing right now you are truckin down the Pony Express Road, Hwy 36 headed thisaway. Several interesting Pony Express museums, and PE way stations along that road, if you have time sometime to check them out. You should pass pretty close to the Ranch ( unless you angle down 24 to the Springs).  I'm actually back from the wedding but can't join as I'm buried in ketchup pipe work.  Safe riding, my friends!

BTW I'm meeting up with my brother in Estes Park Sun.  Staying at the Stanley Hotel (The Shining) and eating in a fav restaurant.  If I wasn't doing that I would be smoking a brisket in my Brinkmann.  Adding that to my repertoire of fav smoked meats.  It will take me several tries to find the perfect marinade and rub.  Already decided on mesquite for the smoke.    Well it's a dirty job but somebody's gotta do it.  We'll see if I can come up to Hot Glue's smoking perfection level.  I'm thinkin I can when I'm not doing several different meats at once like he did for the GOTF.  Or such big quantities. First crack at it in a week.  I was inspired to do this partly because the Chardcore restaurant in Franktown wetted my appetite for brisket but everytime I call and ask if they have it today they say no.  Now I respect their not having it all the time when I dug into it and found how much effort it is - typically rub & marinade for a cpl days then actual smoking time typically 14 hours while you have to keep the temp close to 225° - monitor hourly - and maintain the water tray. Then it's ready when the meat is 190-200° - which varies depending on the grade of brisket.  Yep 5° can make or break the perfection. Recall Mark hired teenagers to stay up all night with the smoker.  I might look into getting an automatic pellet feeder for the Brinkmann!  A deep water trough oughta handle the liquid.  Chardcore uses pine for the smokin wood.  I gotta think mesquite will be better - I use it for ribs and salmon.

Bruce,
Thanks for sharing the story and some photos from the start of this “epic” ride.

Be careful on those hot days......that kind of heat can hurt you and put you out of commission for a few days.  Yes, that is an experience of 20 something years ago motorcycle riding.

From looking at some of the waypoints on your ride so far, looks like you clicked off several miles on 36.  I remember driving back to WV from Denver many years ago ............ I used 36 for as much of that trip as I could.  It was 2 lane blacktop and very straight.  Back then, that road was mostly all open country too.

Great report on y'alls ride so far!

I am officially jealous of you guys.

Having been in the first Gulf War I know a lot about forced hydration.

It isn't pleasant but I'm sure that it saved me on my Texas trip last month.

Just went & picked up a Pit Boss pellet automatic smoker so I don't have to baby the smoker all night.  Unfortunately they only had hickory pellets.  OK first brisket will be hickory smoked but I'll be ordering in my fav, mesquite going fwd.  Not happy, the going rate for smoking pellets even at ebay is typically around $1.25 / lb.  I buy mesquite at Denver firewood for a small fraction of that. I wonder if I can shred up my own mesquite into pellets...

Hmm I just found Pit Boss brand hickory pellets 20# for $9.  Now that's more like it!  Now if I can find mesquite at a price like that - great!

Sorry for the hijack...
