Dear friends

Just watched the trailer for the movie, 'First man' that tells the story of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo mission that made it into the moon.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSoRx87OO6k

On IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213641/

There is being some controversy that it seems those f*kers removed the flag when Neil is walking outside the lander, which I think is historically and morally wrong (i.e. not display the flag).

In any case, the Apollo program and space exploration is a topic that I'm really into (and the landing is one of the great achievements of humankind and USA), so I'm planning to watch the movie in the theater when it is out there on October 12th.

This is from IMDB from a fellow that actually watched the movie: "This is indeed a patriotic film and despite some controversy regarding not depicting the planting of the flag on the moon, flags are everywhere in the movie and the flag is certainly shown at the landing site. There is no doubt this was an American accomplishment and that is clearly celebrated. The inexplicable controversy about the U.S. flag is one of those contrived internet stinks from fringe elements who have never seen the film. It would be a tragedy to allow such nonsense to savage a film that is so inspiring and emotionally satisfying. This is a spectacular, exciting, stunning film and it should be seen by everyone as a reminder of the beauty of what happened in July, 1969".

So I guess it should be ok.

Ryan Gosling:
"[the moon landing] transcended countries and borders.  I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that's how we chose to view it."  He also jokingly admitted he may have a “cognitive bias” being that he’s Canadian.

What a crock!  I won't be seeing it.  I hope it's a magnificent flop!!

I won't either. It was a very proud moment watching the landing in 5th grade class. I can remember it like it was yesterday. My teacher was a very sweet young lady of maybe 30 (she seemed old at the time) She was so excited being able to bring a TV into the class for us to watch. Although it was very grainy black & white, we were all very proud ! Naw, I ain't going to watch some revisionist history. I know what happened, I was there. (Well, almost there)

Revisionist history... Wink.  We all have those moments!

I was on vacation in Wildwood NJ with the family recovering from either a stomach virus or food poisoning while watching from the motel bed.

In regards to watching TV coverage in school it was always a memorable event.  Apollo 13 coverage during my military school sophomore HS history class is one of those times.

It can't be as good as Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. I'll just watch that instead.

Here's a depressing factoid - There has never been a human on the moon while my wife has been alive. (And the last time a human walked on the moon I was one year and three days old myself, and I'm no spring chicken!)

I'm a major space junkie, I tear up watching rockets launch (Especially the private stuff, some things are just too important to be left to government hands!) but I too will be avoiding this movie for the anti-American PC garbage... Might give The Right Stuff another watch instead...

I have mixed emotions about the film since they purposely left out the flag planting.

I have considered myself a space junky also.  I do remember where I was when the landing happened.  I watched in live.

The United States has been very remiss in abandoning the space program.  It has irritated me that we have to pay the Russians to get our personnel to the International Space Station.

We might well be making a comeback in this area.  And I think we all forget the spin offs that made their way into the ordinary American's household in the way of technology innovations.

It's been about 50 years since 3 American astronauts died in a capsule fire. Americans poured huge resources into the space program. While in some respects it was a triumph for all humans, it was absolutely an American risk and triumph, and a victory in a cold war space race. For Hollywood to be ashamed of that should tell everyone what kind of horrible pukes run the industry. A pox on all their houses.

I don't go to any movies, so I don't fund Hollywood (directly).

They all eventually come to FIOS, where I suppose some of my money ends up going to Hollywood anyway (indirectly).

Plus the last time I dumped my hot buttered popcorn on an incessant movie talker/texter, I decided it was better for everyone that I refrain from movie theaters for the duration.

Ever since the hollyweirds lied and stayed here in AMERICA and continue to ea-steal most of their funding here in AMERICA I REFUSE to give them any of my hard EARNED Money. There was a time they made good decent movies. That time has long since past. RIDE SAFE.

An update: watched the movie yesterday, it is really good (but not as good as Apollo 13).

The opening sequence with Neil flying a prototype X-15 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_X-15) that had mechanical issues is breathtaking.

Another sequence that is breathtaking happens years later when he was part of the Gemini program, when he had to correct by hand a spinning out of control Gemini 8 module after docking with an Agena target vehicle.

The landing and following walk in the moon is also pretty awesome (no music, no sound, just silence).

The movie shows pretty well that USA was in a loosing race to beat the damn commies and all the people involved were committed to get the job done. The sacrifice of the crew of Apolo 1 is also displayed.

There is a huge focus on Neil's relation with his family in this movie. My only criticism is that sometimes it gives the impression that he was emotionless (but I guess if you were an astronaut in the 60's you had to have full control of your emotions anyway).

Too bad this celebratory movie was caught in the middle of a partisanship war, with lies and misinformation being spread for personal gain.

For nay-sayers: plenty of flags all over the place (in the rocket, in Neil's house, in the arm of the space suit, after the landing, etc).

In any case, this movie deserves to be watched in the big screen with really blasting sound effects for full appreciation.

I disagree that it is a partisan issue.  It's an American issue.  The movie was not "caught it the middle," there was a conscious decision to omit the key historical moment.

I guess it comes down to perspective and priorities.     Won't say I'll never see this movie but, I can promise I'll never spend a dime to do it.    Yeah, I'm very proud of what Americans did then.
