They had to use that size to get up river before the flooding, and since it was in the area anyway...  It's your standard 13-person KGB sub Wink

You don't even need to have a Russian submariner talk to you to tell them from American submariners. But it helps if it's dark out or you have a room that can be made dark. Why dark you ask?  Roll Eyes Russian submariners glow in the dark!  2funny Heard dat from a friend of mine who was an American U S Navy submariner.  coolsmiley RIDE SAFE.

Once when we were going thru the Strait near Singapore (Strait of Mallaca ?) we came upon a Russian sub broke down being towed into port. Us being red blooded testosterone filled Americans flipped them off and yelled some unflattering things as we passed them.  Smiley

NEVER felt as vulnerable in my life as I did the first time a Russian Bear Bomber overflew the U S S Yorktown-C V S-10. At the time-don't recollect what it was called-the russkies had a missle that if it worked as advertised only one was needed to kill our ship.  Lips Sealed Even after the 30th or 40th flyover by the russkie bear I was at best uncomfortable.  Lips Sealed And similar to a Huey chopper you'd hear it a bit before you actually saw it. Those 8 contrarotating turbo props Are NOISY. RIDE SAFE.

Heard a lot of Bear pilots have serious hearing issues.
It's a rather pretty plane, though.

If it was an Alpha, I'd take it.  That titanium hull could generate enough scrap to build a lot of aircraft.

Heh... I've actually still got that briefcase... I kept Marlboro cigarettes (Worth more than their weight in gold back in 1990 in the Soviet Union) and tea and other stuff in the briefcase... Best part was I could flip it on it's edge and use it as a chair wherever we went...

True story - I went to the USSR as a hard left socialist (I worse a Hammer and Sickle tie under my vest at my grocery store job... Seriously) and came home as a hard right libertarian/Republican after seeing first hand the pain and misery that socialist/Democrat Socialist policies cause.

To equate Russian communism to the Democrats is a stretch by any imagination. But, I'm glad you saw the error of your thinking. (You really wore the hammer & sickle ?)

Just differences in verbiage at this point, with "mainstream" Democratic folks like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Obama, etc. all touting the benefits of communism/socialism...

And yes, I've still got the tie in a box somewhere. And my Lenin Soviet banner I used to fly in my bedroom, and the Soviet Flag and all the other stuff... I was a True Believer in socialism... Until I saw the pain and misery that it causes first hand.

Digging further into my archives, more pain of socialism/Democrat policies:

The lines to get gasoline in 1990 USSR, the cars were lined up for MILES to get gasoline:

The dorkiest picture of my you'll ever see, standing in front of a famous statue of Peter the Great in Leningrad (Now St. Petersburg)

Our tour bus going by Gorbachev.....

(I don't believe it was REALLY him, but they told us it was)

Part of the 6-8 HOUR long line to get into McDonalds.....

The Soviet guards posted outside the American embassy to make sure no Soviet citizens got in to claim asylum. Only Americans were able to get in, we had to show our passports and prove US citizenship to be able to get into the embassy to prevent the socialist citizens from escaping their socialist utopia...

So yeah... I used to be a hard left socialist/communist. I even voted for Comrade Bill Clinton back in the day.... Until my trip to see first hand the harms of that form of government first hand changed me forever...

I wish all Democrats/Socialists could spend a few weeks in a Socialist/Communist country to see first hand the harm, suffering and death that the policies they advocate for would cause if fully implemented...

But I digress, making a light hearted funny thread serious and stuff.... but... c'est la vie...

(Okay, one last funny aside... The young lady you see in the picture, passed out drunk, was from a Catholic private school, and acquired the funds to make this trip from winning an essay contest on why one should "Just say No! to drugs and alcohol"..... Yeah... we had a bit of fun... Russian beers were 15-20 percent alcohol, and about $0.05 each. And we were 17-18 year old kids... but that's a story for another, less serious thread..... Wink

Funny you mention the Marlboros.  I carried those too when I traveled around Turkey on duty (and off).  US military got first class treatment everywhere (back then), but a pack of Marlboros could make any small or medium problem you might encounter just go away.  Especially with airport customs people.  Small gratuities was the norm over there because officials made almost no money for wages, and it was not viewed as a bribe, but only polite good manners.

Turkey was never communist/socialist but their apparatchik officialdom was second to none (and was still under martial law during my first tour).  For instance, I had to go to some 6 different offices all over Ankara to get the paperwork to get married over there, and my JAG office translator (that was his official title, his real job was professional fixer) told me to pay each official I had to deal with 200 lire (above any actual fees), and I objected, and he said.... Captain, that is only about 50 cents US, can't you afford it?  If you want my help, you will do as I say.  (He was an imposing man of 60, and looked a lot like Joseph Stalin with the great bushy eyebrows and mustache).

To give you an idea of how important these guys were to the USAF mission in Turkey, our fixer in Istanbul had been the chief public prosecutor for 20 years before he retired and came to work for us.

Also, Turkish beer was 2-3 times the alcohol of US, and though it tasted the same (and very good), you could get knee walking stupid putting it away at your normal pace.

I've not been to Russia, and doubt I ever would. But I've been to plenty of non Socialist countries and some Socialist countries. The pain and misery is found all over the world.
