Well, today I did the obligatory ride on a Harley. My daughter is making a big career move to take a job half way across the nation. She will be in the Spirit Lake area of Iowa. Anyway, I believe she wanted to touch base with dad before she headed out so she called this morning to ask if I was going to be home because she and her hubby were gonna ride their bikes and wanted to stop by. I waited for them and we all went for a little ride.
During this afternoon I told her I wanted her to ride my bike and tell me if she wanted it when I am done with it (assuming it is still in working shape). Anyway, she quickly suggested we trade bikes for a short ride. We did. She had tried before to get me to take her Road “Queen”, her designation for her Road King, for a ride. I had declined. But now it seemed unavoidable since I really wanted to know if I should will my bike to her and she was not gonna ride mine unless I rode hers. Now, understand,.... my daughter and her husband are Harley people......eat, sleep, and breathe Harley..........wear all the Harley clothes. They do ride,...... their bikes are not trailer queens, but they are Harley people Thru and thru.
As soon as she wrighted my Valk from the kick stand, she exclaimed “this is really light”! LOL. I saw why when I pulled her’s off the stand....way more top heavy than Iam used to. We both struggled with very different controls but soon had the go of it. When we returned to the house, she commented how smooth and comfortable my bike was. I don’t think she ever twisted the grip more than just slightly. I am certain she never got any real feel of the power. I twisted on her Harley and was surprised at how little it had even with the power commander and custom exhaust etc. Well this was the first time she has ridden anything but a Harley.......we will see if she begins to lose some of that die hard Harley attitude. Now I know for certain there is no way I would give up a Valkyrie to ride a Harley. It’s not that I dislike Harleys, I just like the Valk a bunch more.

I tried to fall for the Harley hype and rented 2 or 3 before I bought my Valkyrie...but no power/vibration--turn signals and somethun' else fell off---some 80 Harleys were in the dealership parking lot every morning getting worked on by the guys getting all dirty on the grond--before the dealership even opened..that was the big tip off that there is some real hype..and then they were getting some $10 over sticker in 2002....boy have those guys gotten a bath..never looked back..

At least she tried it even if it is not her cup o' tea. I would believe that if she got her old man's bike she would cherish it. I have a friend at work that does not even have his endorsement yet and he will only be getting an HD. I do sort of understand the love of a big V Twin with the KTM. The torque is a drug...at 177 hp, it might have a bit more than an HD but the grunt is still there but I dont see ever getting rid of the Valk. I think its great you are able to ride with your daughter

I'm about 50 miles south of the Spirit Lake area. Home of Iowa's Great Lakes. Nice area to be. A bit crazy during the on season. Unfortunately, surrounded by the straightest roads in the universe. But no fear, you can get to the Loess Hills on Iowa's west side from Spirit Lake in a couple hours. Nice riding there.
Easy to keep busy at work and play there. Hope it's a good move for her.

I have rode a hundred or more harleys. There have only been a couple that I liked. I do not try to change them. I ride what I want ,they can push what they want.

Rob, I have no expectations. I have never put down her Harleys nor have I ever tried to sell her on Honda’s. If asked, I would encourage her to ride whatever makes her happy. You are correct, she now knows there are bikes lighter to hold up and more comfortable on the road.
Rocketray, Yes, I understand, my daughter’s 2016 road king seemed ok and handled well, but seemed clunky and just not what what I have come to expect.
RDkill, Knowing my daughter, I believe she will cherish it.....and I expect she would make opportunities to ride it. Yes, it is great to find opportunities to ride with her. And greater still that she looks forward to those opportunities and wants to make them happen......like today’s ride.
Old fish guy, Yes, she mentioned that fact, but she is going to be working in corporate management of a bunch of farming stuff.
Moonshot-1 Yes, straight roads and shorter riding season but a good career move for her and she is tough. She will work it out.
Da prez, I hear ya and feel about the same. I don’t think my daughter has had any drivability problems/repairs other than normal scheduled maintenance, but then she might not tell me if she did. I taught her to be independent.
