I have been trying to figure out how to post this for a little bit. Mostly out of embarrassment and a little bit of "you should know better"...anyway, I rode the KTM to work on 9/26 much like I do everyday and after work I got geared up, looked about for moving vehicles and pullout of the spot heading to the left.
I am very early into the turn, but committed, when a pickup across the aisle backs out. The gap seemed to close pretty quick and not knowing if he was going to stop...probably thought too much about that and not enough on how to just get out of the way...I hit the brakes, while turning, and while looking down.
On the way down, the first thought in my head was "I am glade I didnt have the side cases on. Bike falls over and I hit on my left shoulder and sort of plow my left forearm into my ribs. The guy in the truck gets out and somebody else helped me pick the bike up.
I decide that any discussions on anything will have to happen the next day. I tell my wife and she asks how I feel and I said my ribs hurt a bit but probably nothing...well it was not nothing, went to the emergency room last night because of the pain.
I will get back to that...
At work, the guy comes up and is very apologetic and I appreciate his concern. He asked how bad the bike was and I told him it was a couple pieces of body work, a mirror, clutch lever, and shift lever. I also told him that I was glad the panniers were not on the bike ((I had been riding naked (the bike, not me))all week. I said that I would let him know the totals and if he wanted to contribute anything, I would be happy and that would be the last we need to discuss.
I total up the stuff and it comes to $442 with shipping. I told him that on Friday 9/29 and he said he would give $400 and he brought it to work on Mon 10/1...I was VERY surprised.
Anyway, back to my emergency room visit last night. 2 or 3 broken ribs, and a very early stage of pneumonia (something about not taking enough deep breaths to clear the lungs).
I had been riding everyday since the get off and because it didnt feel too bad, I didnt ask the Dr's opinion of I should ride or not...

Broken ribs are never fun.  Been there.  Do your breathing exercises!  Been there too. Pray you heal well.

Yup, crap happens fast.
Heal up quick. The other guy sounds pretty stand-up.

I can’t comment about riding without DR. Ok/knowledge... Lips Sealed  Roll Eyes

Yes breathing deep and ( I know it hurts like hell) cough. It clears your lungs better than deep breathing.

Sorry to hear about the ribs but the guy at work is a stand up guy. Will pray for you.

Having been there and done that (very recently), I understand your pain.

Follow your doc's advice.   Do the breathing exercises you are prescribed.   Yeah, it hurts like hell but, it beats pneumonia.  I was coughing up blood for six days but, the pain eventually decreases.    At least that's what they tell me.   crazy2

Bummer with a capital B. While I am NOT a saw bones I've had cracked ribs before!  Lips Sealed Check with yer sawbones BEFORE you throw a leg over again. Yer ribs protect your lungs when they-ribs-aren't cracked. They CAN Puncture your lung(s) when cracked.  Evil Not a good situation. I only offer this advice bro to bro and Rider to Rider.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I did not have any until Friday. The deductible was $100 for the emergency room. The meds were $50 using insurance. I will have an appointment with my GP...we'll see

Tony, sorry to hear about your mishap.  I have never cracked any ribs so don't know your pain but I know it can't be comfortable.  I hope you have a quick and full recovery.  Looking forward to seeing you at the BBQ.

This is a bad trend our members long time expert riders are crashing and getting hurt pretty regular.  Very distressing that's three in a month.

so, did the truck hit you or stop before you went down?  If he stopped and never hit you or say you swerved to avoid him backing up with him never stopping, then I guess be lucky he is shelling out 400 bucks covering most of the bike damages.  I doubt many people would do that nowadays.

Heck,  even when people hit you, it is hard to collect that I know, especially if they lie to the police on having insurance.

if go see a brace man--orthotics--they do make chest brace with front and back plates that you pull some large velcro stickies to tighten the ribs up and then what makes it spectacular  are drawstrings on both sides that really winch everything down--priceless--I tripped over terriers 2 years ago-and fell/spun into the credenza breaking 3 ribs--I cold only sleep with hat brace and sleeping/sitting upright on a chaise lounge
