Lotteries are a tax on the stupid.
(Though full disclosure requires I admit to buying a few tickets (a few times) when the payoffs were like this. I tell myself I get a couple bux worth of happy dreams about what I'd do with all the money, but the truth is those things are mostly unnecessary, or fattening.)

I spend about $50/year for tickets. This is way less than I spend on movie tickets, yet I can keep the lottery movie going in my head for a week or more until I check my numbers.

When I win (must think positively), I will purchase a modest home with an opposite-of-modest garage in Virginia. Unsure where, specifically, but it will be within a very short distance from seriously fantastic riding.

Prior to winning, I need to figure out how much I get.
1.6B annuity 905M lump sum 600-543M, US gov takes 30-40% (guessing) 400-380M, US gov takes 30% (guessing)
$400M, I think I've family I could help out. Maybe a modest home in every Province/State in Canada/USA.
Ahhh, dreaming is so nice.
Son-in-law bought me my ticket in Tennessee.
And if it isn't won, do I see 2B in the future?

That's kind of mean, no? A couple of tickets costs the same as a modest cocktail. If I choose to buy a ticket instead, where's the harm? Certainly less than multiple bikes I know for sure that if I don't buy one ticket, I cannot win, compared to buying a single ticket I PROBABLY cannot win. It's voluntary, other than some of the REAL taxes that stupid manage to avoid while smart people are grabbed by the heels and shook. Look at wheel taxes, for example...

Easy decision for me on where and how to spend it. Naturally the first thing would be to pay off all current bills. Then I'd set up a scholarship fund at the college where my two girls graduated....the two lost to cancer so would be connected to that somehow, that and music or education. Next would be a fund large enough so from this day forward none of our heirs would ever have to pay for college. Then my wife and I would help all our kids pay off everything they owe. Finally, I'd bring in a good home designer and have a major remodel done to the house, it would have to include a porch all across the front with columns. I want to be able to sit out there in my dotage and wear out a couple rocking chairs. They would have to figure out how to add another stall to the garage so I'll have plenty of room to tinker with derelict bikes. In the end, I might buy a new car....or maybe new tires for the current one. I'd probably hire some full time help to take care of my wife so I can go ride all those derelict bikes I'd been working on. Last but not least....find a 60 yr. old hooker for TJ here in Florida. That man needs a woman in his life, besides....what are friends for?

It's voluntary, other than some of the REAL taxes that stupid manage to avoid while smart people are grabbed by the heels and shook. Look at wheel taxes, for example... For those that can afford it, I guess it is. But (mainly in urban areas, but not always) I have been in many liquor stores (not for liquor) and 7-11s, over decades, where a lot of the people always lining up look like people that cannot feed their kids (or pay any child support), and they have big lists of their favorite voodoo numbers (lifetime repeat customers), and they are paying in twenties. I believe lotteries (and casinos) disproportionately affect the poor (and free sh!t army) in a very negative way. I wonder how many taxpayer funded welfare dollars get spent on lottery tickets (I suspect billions)? This is not a religious thing, it's an economic moral thing. I think of it as a G operated method of telling poor people it's OK not to work or be productive or to take personal responsibility for their own lives (and dependents). I also see it as yet another manifestation (and facilitator) of BIG G. And I suspect if they came up with a way to electronically prohibit anyone on any form of G assistance from buying tickets, those people would scream bloody murder, and so would the G. And when the same plan was run by organized crime, it was a crime. Of course, if the G told me they would kill the lottery, but have to raise my sales and property taxes, I'd be all for lotteries. Playing a game where you have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice (in your lifetime) than winning big is stupid. But I don't play because I don't want to support a bad program.

It's a shame to know that most have no ideas of the odds OR that buying multiple tickets does not reduce the odds.

I hate standing in line at the gas station just to get a sandwich or bag of chips while some are in front of me taking forever to purchase lottery tickets. I have witnessed many times people in poor clothing, driving in a car that is ready to fall apart, with kids in the back seat buying tickets then running out to their car and sitting in it scratching off tickets. When the mafia did it, it was a crime. Still is,, just that the Govt. runs it. Many stories on various media about folks and families lives who have won and been ruined by it. Obviously I do not have a good opinion about it, but that is just me. One thing is for sure,, I will never win it because I will not contribute to the travesty.

One of the coolest things of doing with your money I heard of was several years ago when I worked at Piedmont Airlines, one of our captains did very well in the market, so well that he quit flying, giving up a 767 captain's salary. He began hanging out at small county airports and would get to know the locals, especially the "airport rats". These are the kids that love aviation and just want to be near anything to do with airplanes. Many of these kids are from poor families and this is the closest they will ever get to aviation. Anyway, he would get to know them enough to get a feel for how earnest they were and then he would anonymously fund their education.

If anyone in there right mind pays 20K for a 650-750 Triumph,.....well I'd say they were not in there right mind. I for one own two Triumphs and two BSAs in "very good" condition. I also know the cost of the restoration, and however sentimental I feel,....they will NEVER be worth any thing like 20K. Maybe all four of mine could be realisticly be bought for 20K.
My 2K IS could be bought for $4,800 If anyone is interested.

Well, as long as we're all planning how to spend the redneck retirement program, I'll kick in my ticket. Wounded Veterans parents would be funded to be with their kids during hospital healing. Real service dogs for those who legitimately need them. There are a few local charities that I would contribute to, heavily. Also, I need another Packard. (just sayin)

It's a voluntary tax paid to the government. After all they get about 2/3's of the proceeds.

I only have about 20 or so really close friends. I would give each of them $1 million. Give my 2 grown sons $25 million each and my 4 grandkids $10 million each. I would have a antique motorcycle collection. The rest I would sit back and enjoy the interest the rest would draw for my remaining yrs.

I didn't buy a ticket, went grocery shopping instead....figured the money spent would stay with me longer. I have a set string of numbers I play once in a great while, only once this year so far. Judging by those numbers I would have matched two of them plus the PB #5. Have no idea what that would have paid, maybe got my investment back. I'll play a scratch off once in a while, only from a fairly new run of a new game though. So far with scratch off I'm about even on $$ spent, I don't get excited over any of it but it's kinda fun to dream about the big one.

Might I gently request splitting the groups in half and just calling those who spend money they don't have "stupid"? I spent a whopping $10-$12 dollars on the lottery over the past week or two. Didn't win a dime. Last Thursday I went to one of my favorite local restaurant and spent $30 or so on my dinner and drinks. I've lost all of the dinner and drinks by now, too. I spent my own post-tax money on it and all my bills are paid. It was fun. Like burning $5-$10 gas in the bike, to mail a letter at a Post Office that's only 2-3 miles from my house (the short way).
