Author Topic: Insurance “Total Loss” 98’ Valkyrie – Options?  (Read 728 times)

I have a 98’ Valkyrie that I purchased just over a year ago with only 9,000 miles on it. It was in excellent shape and then a month ago it had an engine fire that damaged the carbs, wiring, etc. I am so disappointed in the outcome – the repairs are more than the value of the bike and thus the insurance company is calling it a total loss. The bike still looks great from 10’ as the fire did not damage the paint except for the frame. The insurance company is offering $600 for a “salvage value” and wondering if anyone here has any other suggestions of where I might get more value for the bike if I decided to keep it. With such low mileage I have to think it is worth more than that to someone… Any suggestions would be great.

It is repairable. Just how much you want to do is the issue. Complete  wiring can be bpoght as well as an engine.

The title says it is a GL 1500 Touring, but I am not sure if it really is a Touring model. VIN:1HFSC34WA100082. If I could figure out how to post a picture I would...  Smiley

There are way more than $600 in parts there.

I'd keep it!

You can decide later if you want to Fix it, Sell it or Part it out.

If you're close enough for me to come get it, I'll give you $800 for it.

It takes a tremendous amount of damage to the overall bike to actually cost more to fix than it's worth. In your case, I'd consider stripping the bike down to the frame and repaint. Then buy a complete wiring harness off ebay and put it all back together, fixing or replacing stuff as necessary as I went along with the reassembly. You need to go to your profile and add your location, you might have someone close by that's willing to lend a hand....I know I would if you lived close.  cooldude

Unless I read the OP wrong, It sounds like the insurance company will give him the bike back for $600 after payout.

If that is the case, and they offered close to actual retail value with a buy back of $600, I would buy it back from them.

If it's really the Tourer it will have the Honda bags.  Assuming the fire affected mostly the engine area, the bags alone, if they're still OK, would bring over $600.  The final drive could bring the same.

I'd probably part it out and spend the money on another used one.

Standards and Tourers are almost just alike... people turn Standards into Tourers all the time by
throwing on a set of OEM bags and and OEM windshield. Standards have reflectors on the rear fenders
that "real" Tourers don't have. People don't usually remove the reflectors, so that's a tell...

Need the next character after the "SC34"  Just means Valkyrie...this puzzle will be answered with the next character. Your vin is missing two digits.

I also read your post that you could keep the bike from the insurance for $600.

The title will now be salvage, so buy a replacement good frame, they are now available. $500 +/-

If the damage is as light as you think, then you should be able to get it back on the road with a good title for another $500 maybe.

But before you start, look at what needs replacing, and get prices.
