...thinking about getting a full size pick-up, with a Manual Transmission, how would you go about it?
I have found that they were still available in the 2010/2011 models, and Toyota still sells a Tacoma with a Manual.

But say you wanted to get into a Big Three truck and wanted Manual. What would you do?

We were fortunate to find a 1992 D250 Dodge with a 5.6 Cummings and four speed manual with 135,000 (mostly long highway) miles on it from an elderly gentleman who maintained it well until he decided not to travel to Arizona for winters any longer.
It was "seasoned" but not rode hard and put up wet over many years.

If you don't need a perfect body and paint opt for a good, used truck from a private party that values practicality over pretty.

Maybe establish a good communication with a local dealer to let you know if they come across any good ones being traded in or brought back by folks that didn't like their purchase and want to swap one brand out for another.

Estate sales and farm auctions may be worth looking into as well. Smiley

dodge was the last to offer a manual. certain yr cummins have issues, research needed.  bodies rot and more expensive to fix than ford and chevy which also rot.

Ford, 7.3L diesel 99-03, manual offered.  no emissions junk. the 01-03 had 275hp 525 lbsft.  minor mods and a SCT tuner will net over 300hp 600+lbsft and better mpg.    01-03 are limited to mods for 400hp at wheels due to powdered rods being used.   the big v-8 has head issues.  V10 good solid engine.

I don't know when chevy stopped offering manuals

hope that helps

I would forget the manual and get one with an automatic transmission.  With todays transmissions there are no benefits to a manual transmission.  It used to be that manuals were better on fuel, but in a lot of cases these days autos get just as good and sometimes better fuel mileage.  That and you don't have to change clutches.  Grin

   CSJ,
Not sure what you are looking for. Ford F150XL is a base model truck. You should be able to find it in a man trans. Also the Chevy Silverado in the base/work truck model you will find in man trans. When I was looking last year at this time. I was seeing both those models in man trans.

I agree with bscrive but, to each there own.

You can still get a manual transmission in a Ram 2500 and up, but only behind the Diesel.

I don't believe Ford offers one anymore, but I've been wrong before.

No idea about GM.

go into a dealership and tell them to order you one the way you want it... Roll Eyes

Not sure many dealers do that anymore though but back in the 90s, you could do that order EXACTLY what you want and get it.    Most do not even like to dealer trade much anymore saying take what is on our lot or go away or wait until something similarly allocated will be coming in eventually that they ordered.

true today auto manuals have more gears.   still doesn't take the place of the feeling of a manual shift.

I drive a 1997 Mazda manual five speed.  It has a little over 230,000 miles (370,148 kilometers) on the original clutch.  I don't drive a manual for fuel mileage.  Much like I don't ride a Valkyrie for the best fuel mileage.

I think your right on the Ram. I know I read a yr ago they were stopping the manual, I guess they changed their minds.

I drive for a GM dealership and they do dealer trades or just buy the vehicle out right from other dealer's all the time.

Find a dealer that does fleet sales,  they often have bare bone trucks that some ambitious over achiever in sales mis-ordered. I once picked up a long box XLT F-250 regular cab and 4 speed on the floor.  I miss that truck but it had 360,000 something (4 years old) when I traded it and was continual nickle and dime maintenance  toward the end. The Government Motors Silverado replacement I still have,  unfortunately. It barely qualifies as a real truck.

Both of my current vehicles were bought by my dealer from another dealer. Yes they do it all the time. Don't settle for what is on the lot. Someome somewhere has what you are looking for.

I can say the older I am, the smoother my shifting is.

(In the last 26 years, there has only been one year when we didn't have a manual-shift vehicle)  Smiley

I will say that after driving the manual for a while, it's a relief to drive the automatic, especially in town.

Being someone who hasn't bought a brand-new car since 1996, I prefer the perceived reliability of a manual transmission, although I'll admit I've never had and automatic fail on me.  I've helped replace my dad's clutch and throw-out bearing when I was a teenager, and replaced the clutch on my girlfriend's (now wife) new-to-her twelve-year-old Accord, but have never had a manual transmission fail internally.  My wife and I are easy enough on clutches that the 1996 Saturn we had for 520,000 kilometres never had clutch disk issues, although I replaced the hydraulic master/slave assembly on it once.

We are talking Madison WI now.  I found my EXACT truck I wanted once on another Madison dealers lot and went to bargain with the other same mfg. dealer in Madison which is closer and I thought I would prefer buying from that salesman in the past.  They told me since in same town of Madison selling same mfg. vehicle, they do NOT trade with one another, but did find me something 400 miles away not EXACTLY like I wanted but close but wanted to charge me 500 bucks to go get it for me.  I walked and went to the other dealer in town buying my EXACT truck I wanted there instead at a better deal much to my surprise.

All depends on dealer I guess if they want a sale or not?   Also depends on mfg. selling as well Ford, GM, and Dodge are a dime a dozen in terms of trucks, but Toyota is another story, harder to come by.
