I had the stitches removed yesterday and last night I started to experience some intense pain across the shoulders up high just below the neck. Almost like an extremely pulled muscle, couldn't hold my head up straight without pain and walking was really intense. I had to get up 3-4 times to help my wife use the potty chair and I could hardly walk, every step it felt like it was pulling real hard on alternate sides of the shoulders. Talked to my daughter this evening and she said she experienced the same thing about the time she went back for stitch removal....about a week. Has something to do with a nerve being compressed by left over gas injected in the belly during the operation. So, I'm wondering if any of you that have gone through the procedure.....did you experience the same or similar thing. My daughter said it took about a week for it to dissipate, hope that's not true.  |

I've had the surgery, but no after effects like you are experiencing.

My wife had her gall bladder removed last year and she did not have any of those symptoms post surgery. She did get a "poor pitifully me"  attitude and thought I needed to wait on her hand and foot for a couple days though. |

John,
No experience here... BUT, if the source of your difficulty is gas, then you know what you need to do! Just be sure you're in a different room from Rita... you know... to lessen the impact... lol Sorry for your pain, my friend, sure hope things improve soon... like right now!!! Glad you're at least up and around.

I didn't have any of those issues you're having. They just poked 4 holes in me and took the bladder and duct. I went home right after I woke up and had no problems. Sorry to hear about what you're going thru.

Had a good night last night after taking half an oxycodon, then a little under 2 hrs. later took half a muscle relaxer. Worked out pretty good, today has been some better but still bothersome. At least I can hold my head up, couldn't two days ago. As for the operation itself, no problems there, four holes that are itching like crazy. Haven't found anything I've eaten that creates a problem so that's encouraging, especially after hearing all kinds of horror stories about dietary issues.

Remember your problem is air inside, now when taking the pain killers
they will bind you up and my delay relief from problem.
I have gone through what you are going through because of several
resections to my lower intestines because of Chrones and had Gall Blatter
removed at same time.
Dont know what its like to only have it taken out but I got
split from sturnum to below belly button. The hardest thing I have gone through
is trying to get my stomach back in shape.

I didn’t experience your after effects of pain in the shoulders. But I did learn quickly that if feeling a need to fart to get on the toilet first. And learned to carry spare undies in my truck. Jus sayin’.

The shoulder pain is a result of minimally invasive surgery...three small cuts, correct??
They inflate your abdomen with air to make sure the have a better view. The pain you are feeling is the air working its way up, it does take a couple days for the pay to show up and a couple of days for that pain to move on. Movement is you friend to get that air out of your buddy....farting will help, but only in the farting is funny (because farts are funny) sort of way.
What I found was raising my arms above your head will help and shoulder shrugs....

Brings up a memory of the one night stay in the hosp. following this surgery. That evening I couldn't relieve myself and it was getting painful. I'd stand there waiting for something to happen, a little would emerge but not enough to keep up with what the IV was pumping in. About 3:00am I tried again and while standing there felt the need to pass gas. It wasn't!  I called the nurse and explained my dilemma, she was so sweet about it. At 3:30am she called the dr. and he ordered a cath....another uncomfy event. Three attractive young ladies standing there, two holding my junk while the third is trying to insert the cath. I'm freezing and shaking partly from pain, partly from the cold. One nurse turned to me and said "relax" whereupon I reminded her of my somewhat tenuous position so one gal ran and got a heated blanket. Felt wonderful and was able to stop shaking long enough for the insertion to take place. Within a few minutes nearly 700cc were extracted....oooohh, heaven on earth.  After breakfast I took a walk with my various attachments and pulling the pole along with me. As I passed the nurses station they looked somewhat surprised, I told them I now know how a dog feels when he goes for a walk on a leash. As for the shoulder pain, judging by how I feel in general I may have caught a bug while in there. Every muscle in my body is achy and sore, very stiff when I move. Stomach not great until this morning. Middle of the night I took a Tylenol and a couple hours later woke up soaked as though a fever had broken. Still stiff but as I move about it's going away. Reminds me of the old saying: "the operation was a success, but the patient died."  |
