So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

Something about 5G and micro cells....  (only good for a few hundred yards and fairly expensive)

Obviously, I am no expert but according to the news, rural areas are falling way behind.
Hell, I don't even know where the starting line is for this race.   coolsmiley

gee, I am lucky to get 5 megs of service with my internet provider.  If I lived in next town north 5 miles away,  same provider offers 10x's and more so faster internet speed.   Fiber optics will never come to this town probably in my lifetime but 5 megs does most of what I need it to do.

whatever you do, do not get Hughes NET and go over your 50gb per month provided.  Kids watching netflix movies, etc. did this twice and the speed once over dips to like 1 meg is all hardly able to do anything on internet and even watching youtube videos would spin and spin not load or pausing all the time.

At this point high speed, reliable, synchronous Internet and decent schools are the two things that are keeping me in the suburbs and preventing me from building a house out on my rural land and flipping off the rest of society.

This is only 10% of what I COULD get (extra $20 / month)

FIber to Google's router, then bridged over a powerline bridge to my room, then I have my router QOS settings to 100 Mbps so my VoIP phone will keep working. This runs $50 / month - Gigabit is available for $70/month , and I get TV OTA / Dish Network. I could get TV from Google, but my Dish price can't be beat.

Windstream provider. Over the phone lines. Unlimited. NETFLIX, Amazon and Youtube are my main sources of entertainment

$65 a month. Only decent provider in town.

About 9 download and 3 upload.

(And for what it's worth, I could go MUCH faster for the $$$ I pay, but I instead pay to have higher class service, 5 static IP's that are registered to me, no blocked ports, and contractual permission to run servers from my house, which I do... But that's another story...)

Obviously, I know little about this stuff. But, why would your server be all the way over in Houston ? When I have run these tests the server was within a couple hundred miles, usually closer.

I live in off the beaten path and have no cable available.  My DSL provider claims I'm getting 7 MBPS, but I rarely see more than 5 or 6.  It's worth the tradeoff, as there's no way I'm moving closer to the city.

Whatever your speed, it's likely far better than it used to be.  I write software for the Oil & Gas industry, and back in the 90s, 2400 BPS (not K or M BPS!) was about the best we'd see at drilling rigs in the oilfield.  In some places we ran phone wires through pastures to have data and phone at the rig.  Occasionally we used a fancy satellite transmitter/receiver that was built into a briefcase.  To aim at the satellite you used a compass and adjusted the lid to an angle appropriate for your latitude.  There were bold warnings against standing in front of the unit, especially if you were concerned about your ability to reproduce.

Verizon triple play is 124 month plus the extra crap and taxes
tv phone and internet wifi

dvr is 12/month we have 2  of them
maintenance contract is 10 a month so they come out and spend hours for free when $hit happens- and it does a few times a year
9 a month for extra router and signal boosters as we have steel beams in ceilings (we raised up another floor above the living foom for the kids 20 yrs ago that needed steel beams )  that crap out all signals (why we switched from optimum- couldnt watch netflix or anything using wifi)
10 a month for the 2nd land line (for her business- we get fax orders on the 1st line besides it being the one the kids call us on

By the time you add taxes is 187 a month
more than I think is fair but they get the job done and my wife's commute is 20 feet lol

My wife business is run from house so its an office expense just like my internet at work

Not modem, is the location/town I live in.  Modem is only a few years old tops.  50 bucks for under 15 megs is a rip off IMO.... but better than NO internet I guess?  Should be 35 bucks tops, but I do not have a choice on internet providers only one I can get besides going HughesNET which is satellite that goes OUT gave that a try NOT doing that again or LiveWire thru another local provider that recently came to my town and no faster and no cheaper.     IMO 50 bucks per month should get 50 megs speed of service or for sure 25 megs....

Your modem is old.

I nagged Windstream when my service dropped dramatically.  Eventually they sent a tech out to check the service.

As soon as he saw my modem he turned around, walked to his van and installed a new one for me. Service immediately improved to better than previous.

ATT 2.8 meg down and 384k  up consistantly for $56 month, internet only.
Lousy service and other than Satellite that is all that is available.
And they have stopped taking on any new customers in the area.
So if someone cancels and moves a new resident cannot get the service.

This ATT wired is better than Verizon wireless in this area. Verizon claims they are upgrading
so far nothing. VSAT just came into the area and I am looking at it.

Yes. I do not know and they will not say. But the last several folks into the area ATT would not accept them after the folks moving out canceled the service. Very strange actions for a business. So far they have managed to reduce there monthly revenue in the area by several hundred dollars - seems strange to me.

Why would they want to quit service ?

I think they (ATT) are going to ditch DSL and go
all "u-verse" so they aren't going to take any
new DSL customers and people who don't
have a good enough connection back to get
u-verse are out of luck... I can't get u-verse
and I'm a little nervous about rocking the boat
since my only other choice for passing packets

I still have DSL service at my old house but in talking with a repairman I learned that the maintenance on the old wire lines is getting too high. I signed an easement for at&t to run fiber optic cable on my property years ago and they did come out and bury a hollow tube but that was over 5 years ago and still no fiber optics.

Att is still using much of the old copper cables installed years ago. But what the temporary fix is to keep customers and get better service is fiber up to a box that services many houses with copper. So its fiber to copper, this is going to stop and an old technology not worth investing in since with the birth of 5g its going to go to wireless to the house. Not sure if they will put a fiber node on a pole to service many houses or run it from central stations. When ATT had the lock on service many years ago the problem with speeds were they had to have a central switching station within a certain distance of the location they were servicing. The greater the distance the slower the speed. These service stations are costly in maintenance and to build and you had to have the land to build them in a congested area. By updating to fiber to copper with boxes scattered around they were able to go greater distances with greater speeds and service more people. This also did not require a big building but a small box much like underground power cable transformers. But this again was only an temp fix since none of the old routes of service will more than likely be used. So why should they invest big money for critical infrastructure that will not be there to pick up a few customers. This is why rural routes are not getting connected and the companies are not investing in local rural service.

I suspect that you are correct, but they do not offer U-verse in this area either. And have not exposed any plans to do so, although they have it installed about 2 miles away via fiber.

Why would any company (ATT) willingly reduce its own revenue and alienate customers?
Seems rather short sighted to me.

But then I have never been impressed with many ATT business decisions, which may explain their decline in certain markets.

If ATT wants to exit a market they should do so, but doing so in a way that alienates customers is just stupid. And refusing revenue in a captive market situation, while maintaining some service, is not a good way to profitability.

Funny how quickly things change, I remember when an entire ISP could run off of a single T1.... Now people wouldn't settle for that even with crappy DSL service, a full T1 only has 1.544 MBPS. (Although admittedly it's far more reliable than that crappy DSL would be.)

Even a T3, which was once just a young geek's wet dream is "only" 44.736 MBPS...

I had the Frontier FIOS guy out yesterday to replace a flaky Ethernet port on my fiber optic to copper ONT box, and he told me GB Internet is now available in my area if I wanted to spend the money...

In 1999 this idea was on the verge of science fiction, now it's a reality and everyday thing...
