I have a close friend that just lost his wife to cancer. He is living in a large home by himself still. Well one evening we had a long talk and I mentioned how healing long rides are for me and how I was planning to ride to Taos this June. Well low and behold one day this week he calls and sends me pictures of a new bike He has gotten for himself. Well then a few days later he calls and asks about coming with me. Now here is a good friend in pain and I feel any of us would jump at the chance to help a man heal from his pain. Now it,s been a few years since he has ridden so we sat down and talked about what he may need to do a trip of this length. We got him the tire repair stuff tools he may need and Sena device for his helmet so we could talk along the way and he could listen to some tunes. I have found in my later years that it is one of the gratest things you can do is give back. And this will deffinenatly be a chance to help him take a breath and for a moment or two forget what0 he has lost and let Mother Nature heal his wounds.

Ask Bruce (DDT) about the healing power of long rides. But being a good friend is ALWAYS appreciated.

Nice post Shortleg, and I'm sure you as well as your friend will benefit greatly from this journey together. The title of your thread here says it all....it's so true no matter under what circumstances one does a longer motorcycle trip

I think it was Smokin' Joe who said many years ago on this board that, "4 wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul".... I've always thought that was true.
Going for an afternoon rider is better than therapy on a shrink's couch.
I think I saw it written somewhere once that, "It sometimes takes a tank of gas before I can clear my head".... words to live by.
Hope to meet you friend this Summer at InZane in Taos.....
Ride safe

Over the last 45 yrs motorcycles have saved my marriage and my job many many times. The wife and I can have a spat or a problem we can't solve and I could take a motorcycle ride and get an attitude adjustment and come back with a solution. Same with the job. I just think better and can focus on a subject when riding. I do my best thinking at 70 mph riding down the interstate.

It truly takes either a fellow rider or that old dog with his head out the window to understand what we are talking about here.

Years ago I read an autobiographical book about this situation, where a fellow who had recently lost his wife and 19-year-old daughter goes on a 14 month, 55,000 mile motorcycle trip. Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road by Neil Peart (Rush's drummer and lyricist) Amazon link for this book

Good on ya.
Encourage - or better yet - invite your friend - to do some shorter trips before the big one. To work out the bugs he's not expecting; and to set reasonable expectations.

But, without a doubt the best drummer I've ever seen. Saw them in '79 or '80, remember it like it was yesterday.

Maryland to Taos and back is a long trip. Plan it out and then add a day or two for each way would be my best advice. I hope some us heading out might be able to jump in a tag along on the ride for part of the trip.
