Cuomo just about bankrupted HUD and he is trying to do the same with NYS. Between him and DeBlasio they may succeed. Some folks never seem to learn. I still like NYS, it just too many liberals, thats all.  Smiley

Would seem to me the 7 Ps are applicable.
Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

I'm thinking they need to re-prioritize their real needs.
I personally doubt a $10k cap on deductible interest caused any "rich folks" to leave NY.

He's an idiot.  How does not allowing taxpayers to deduct taxes property taxes over $10,000 impact the taxes paid by property owners?  They still have to pay the assessed taxes or lose the property.  I learned that watching "The Blues Brothers".

I think this is his theory.

“Those New Yorkers affected by the loss of the SALT deduction are now filing their income taxes in other states or using other means to circumvent their tax liabilities, Cuomo seemed to suggest.”

Whether it’s true or not, I have no idea. (One can learn much from the Blues Brothers and Animal House)

It actually makes a big difference for some, particularly in states with very high property, State and local income taxes. Up until now, big taxes locally were used to reduce the taxable income for Federal taxes. That, in effect reduced what they paid in Federal taxes, sliding more towards the state & local. Now that the amount paid elsewhere is capped, there's less of a deduction of Federal taxes.

But the thing he is not telling is that NY is clawing taxes back from residents that live and work more than 3 months of the year in NY. So if you are a snow bird or any part time resident and live in NY and somewhere else also you owe NY taxes regardless if you are listed as a resident of another state. You still owe NY taxes and they will come after you.

I suspect there's a lot he's not telling.   It's always someone else's fault (normally the other side).   Roll Eyes

I think we all appreciate that, at what rate? By letting States run taxes through the roof under a past tax code that diverted Federal taxes via deductions, I think most folks were ready for separation of State & Federal taxes. I'm all for a flat tax on state and federal, but at the least, on Federal. No deductions, whatever your actual income is times X%. It's crazy to let someone write off interest on a yacht as a second home, not to mention property taxes on any home. You make money, and you pay bills & taxes with it. It isn't right to allow people to "decide" how to alter their taxes. Same with charitable deductions. I give money to causes I believe in, and I file it every year, but it isn't right. Same thing as religious contributions and exemptions. I pay the same sales tax on a bottle of bourbon as anyone else in the State of WI, rich or poor. I think that's a good system.

What the revised tax code (with limited/caped state tax write-offs) really does is stop the rest of the country from having to (indirectly) subsidize those few states (and cities) who tax the pants off their people in the name of socialism.  So if you love those policies fine, but you get to pay for them yourselves without making the rest of us ante up to help you (with our federal taxes).  You are no longer going to get great big federal tax write offs to make the pain of all those programs less painful.  If you don't like it, reconsider your vote next election cycle.  Or move out of that jurisdiction.  This is an excellent plan.... even if I do lose a few dollars off my usual return.
