My day's not complete until I've been called a right wing nut job and a left wing liberal cuck... Bonus points if I can get the same person to call me both things... For some reason that song tripped the memory of this one in my head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDw4lsPDEhoFor you older folks, this version might be more palatable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeT5otk2R1g

Growing up my brothers and I had to listen to Country & Western music 24/7 it seemed. Because of that, I'm not a fan at all. (If I never hear another Merle Haggard song it won't be soon enough) But, I do like and appreciate some Johnny Cash for some reason. I know a few people that will never listen to country music but they like Willie, Waylon and Johnny. go figure. In fact some of them listen to mostly hard rock.

Not political, but speaking of Johnny Cash and cover versions of songs, Johnny Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" is one of those cases where the cover is so much more, deeper, personal that it just embarrasses the original. Cash made this one HIS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc(If you've never heard it, here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPz21cDK7dg )

I had more than my share in my late teens and early 20's, then just got bored of it... On a recent trip to a location where it's semi-legal, I acquired some of the modern stuff. Was REALLY looking forward to it. Just made me dizzy, nauseous and couldn't wait for it to wear off. Maybe I had too much, tried again but MUCH less, same effect. Tried an edible. Same effect, but it was delayed 2 hours. Tried a vaporizer. Same effect. Not sure what changed, but I can't stand the stuff any longer, it just makes me wanna hurl, get dizzy and nauseous and feel terrible...

I quit burning around 1980, tried it a couple times recently and had the same experience Serk described so I'll just leave it be. Just a waste of money anyway.

I saw this, so now you must also see it. I like rambutans. Freshly picked is best. When I was 14 I came back to school in the UK after a summer vacation with parents in Malaysia. Along with my "normal" luggage I had a shoulder back stuffed with pineapples and rambutans. Maybe 4 pineapples and a few pounds of rambutans. This was the same flight I spent nearly all my money on a Swiss Army knife at the stop over in Geneva. Landed in London and I've lost the darn knife. I have enough money to get me from Heathrow Airport to Kings Cross, on to the train and to the station in Loughborough. But no money for the final taxi to the boarding school. It's 1.7 miles and getting late. So off I go with my heavy heart and suitcase. I have to lug it down the road it has all my school clothes in and a few non school clothes along with toiletries etc. After about a mile of having to change hands to get this darn thing down the road - way before luggage had wheels - I'm ready to leave the bloody thing on the side of the road hidden in a hedge until I can come back and get it. At that moment a young man walks across the road and asks me if I need help and where was I headed to. I tell him and he tells me he is studying at the college right across from my boarding house. Off we go with him taking the suitcase. Hero! We arrive at my destination and I say "thank you and would you like a pineapple?". The look on his face was priceless. it's 1967 and pineapples are nearly as rare as rocking horse poop. I told him I bought it 2 days ago at the market in Jahore Bahru. He was gob smacked. (The flight took a loooooong time. One of the flights had stopovers in Frankfurt, Rome, Beirut, Karachi, Bombay, Delhi, Rangoon Bangkok and Kuala Lumpor before arriving in Singapore). My fellow students enjoyed the rest of the pineapples and the rambutans. I still buy rambutans at the Great Wall grocery store in NE Atlanta but they just don't have that fresh off the tree burst of intense flavor.

Heh, I was 18 and traveling home from a trip to the Soviet Union and made a stop in the UK to visit a friend I made on what would later become the Internet.
I went to an awesome concert at Knebworth house, afterwards made it back to London but missed the last train back to my friend's house in Basildon.
I only had enough money for the train, not a cab.
So.... I spent the night on a park bench in Trafalgar Square using newspapers as blankets.
Woke up to a group of Asian tourists excitedly taking my picture repeatedly.
It's funny, the trips that at the time have the most things go wrong tend to make the best stories years later...

At my wedding in Turkey, I was informed (on site) that no gifts could be brought into the club for security reasons. The only plan available was to lift two security barriers, back my El Camino with camper up near the front door, and have everyone pitch their gifts into the open camper.
(I had no idea people were all going to bring gifts. I had asked my office mates to let it be known the wedding cost me my meager life savings, and cash would be greatly appreciated, and most jr officers contributed to a nice kitty (thanks guys), but there were still a pile of gifts.) (newly married paupers don't need money, they need Polish crystal decanters with matching champagne glasses)
The Turk Judge and his man Friday (marriage in Turkey is secular) showed in their official robes (think Ottoman Empire burgundy velvet with high gold braid collars, and huge bushy white mustache and eyebrows), and it was time to get on with it, and then I was ordered to get my car clear away from the building, in case it blew up. I had no help or volunteer, so I jumped in and drove a half mile down and parked along the street. In a city of millions with that many taxis, there was no cab in sight, so I had to hustle back on foot (in my borrowed white military tux.... oh waiter). I had the money for a cab, but there was no cab. So I used the shoes.
Having delayed the good Judge some 10 minutes, he was upset with me for my apparent lack of respect and demanded more money (than already paid, not much), or he and his man Friday would leave and there would be no wedding (just a party with 250 odd souls). So I anted up nearly the last money I owned ($40) so that the circus could continue to it's conclusion. It seemed a poor time to raise the issue of extortion (though I couldn't think of a better example).
Sometime later, after the formal wedding (conducted like a contract negotiation around a big table, in Turkish. I had a translator, but the judge never stopped, and my translator was too polite to interrupt, so I just said yes sir in Turkish whenever he paused and looked at me), one of my office mates handed me an envelope with about $600 in it (bless this poor sinner father).
Neither my car, nor any of the packages blew up. So there's that.
(there's more to this story, but I've told it before)
