I am RV tripping to the UP area in April. Wife saw info on colorful rocks that are plentiful on beaches in the Port Huron area. Question is, is this really as impressive as it sounds, or just a chamber of commerce stunt. If its good, what beaches are best to search. Thanks

Not sure where you are coming from? Doesn't say where you are located. The U.P. is good stuff. The tunnel of trees is a good viewing in the north western lower. It's north of Petosky but the real tunnel starts near Harbor Springs. Mackinaw City is a tourist trap but worth a look. Lotsa shops that's for sure.
In all the years I've lived here the bridge is always nice to see. I rode across it on my bike 2 years ago. Check the weather before you get there. They will shut the bridge down if there is high winds.
Tequaminom Falls is nice, Pictured Rock, Copper Harbor, Iron Mountain or anything around the Great Lakes is good viewing. This is just off the top. If you have time take the ferry to Mackinaw Island out of Mackinaw City before you cross the bridge. There is plenty to see here if you have the time. It's a good state to vacation in.

Port Huron is a very nice area and there are several other near by as well. I'm not a native of Michigan, but have lived in the state since '83. Gary Henry (Romeo) is a native Michigander and knows/has been to a lot of places in the state, I would suggest PMing him if he don't sound off. Do you know the name of the beach/area you asked about? Pictured rocks is a long way from Port Huron.

I grew up in Michigan. I am unaware of colorful rocks on beaches in (or around) Port Huron, but there are billions of very colorful (and beautifully rounded) (I think granite and agate) rocks on beaches and in the water up around the Tunnel of Trees north of Petosky and Harbor Springs on the Lake Michigan coastline. Many years ago, the wife and I parked and had to walk a good ways back to a public beach on a boardwalk in that area, and we collected hundreds of them (more than common sense allowed for my rear suspension), drove them home to VA, and they still are in and around a Japanese garden I made, outside my rear picture window. Every time it rains (or I water), the color is revealed again. (Research Public Beaches up there, and look for images showing a long boardwalk) (it might have been a small state park, but I don't think so) I believe they are also in places on the Lake Superior coastline, but do not know where. This may have been a crime (when we did it, or now); we used small back packs for the operation (and were sneaky, trip after trip). We did not plan this, but the stones (when wet) were so spectacular, we just did it on the spur of the moment. http://experiencemichiganmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/agate-beach-rock.jpg The famous Petosky stone.  In April, that water will be frigid, and you'll be shallow wading in the surf to make your pics. Dry, the stones are nice, but the color disappears quite a bit (see the first pic). |

Best beaches are on Lake Michigan. I believe the colorful rocks you are referring to are petosky stones.
They are a hard find nowadays, but I understand it was quite a hobbyist back when I was a kid. If you are heading Tom the U.P. In April expect to find snow. You may be able to rent snowmobiles if you’re into that. Northern Lowe Michigan is a beautiful place. The Traverse City area, Leelenaw peninsula. Some of the most beautiful lakes I need the world. Glen Lake, Higgins Lake. The Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore is awesome.
Western U.P. Is a whole different world. Mining country of yesteryear. Copper Harbor is worth the drive.
Isle Royale National Park for true wilderness.

I know its a shame that I sit here with maps in hand, and have to plan my routes by places that i need to stay away from, rather then where I want to go. It' never going to get any better, just how much worse. Wish I knew what the solution is, I think it's beyond help. I'll go to UP and have a good time, inspite of snow, the hood, or the hoodlums. wife in bad health, time is getting short. Thanks for your response Don.

Don, Detroit is no different than any big city. Anyone can post pictures like that of any big city in any state. In the center of the Michigan once you get north of Grand Rapids things really start to change scenery wise. That goes for either side of the state. Get north of Flint on the east side and it's the same way. The northern lower is nice, and as soon as you cross the bridge it's another world. Not sure which way you are coming up (U.S.131?) Check out M-37 on the west through White Cloud / Newago into Baldwin. That route can lead you to Traverse City and along the lake shore. It's all good.
