Our newly elected governor, Whitmer is proposing a gas tax increase for the state of Michigan. Tax over the next year would be 45 cents. This isn't the only tax increase she is proposing but one that will affect all Michigan residents or anyone traveling through the state. Could cost residents here roughly $270.00 a year increase per vehicle.

This would make Michigan's gas tax the highest in the country. She is being met with big opposition. I think this is going to be her agenda as long as she is in office. Raise our taxes. She is off to a flaming start.

If the monies are dedicated to repair, replace, and new construction of roadways and bridges, then the people of Michigan will have to suck it up and pay the tax.  The burden is also borne by all that pass through the state and purchase fuel.  Does this tax have an ending date in the proposed bill before your legislature?  Is it locked into some sort of fund or trust that can't be accessed except for those purposes?

If your roads and bridges are falling apart, it's gonna cost vehicle owners many hundreds of dollars to replace tires, rims, and front end suspension systems that are destroyed or worn prematurely by decrepit roadways.  Heck, the cost of labor and parts for a new CV joint is well beyond that $270 increase.  Even hybrid/electric vehicles are at risk from poor surfaces.  Hitting an eight inch pothole with a motorcycle at 60 is a fatality or ICU experience in waiting.  We have all hit small ones and that's enough to squeeze the bars a bit tighter.
The Minneapolis bridge collapse a few years back got some immediate attention for infrastructure updates, but the conversation died out pretty quickly (as usual) as the news cycle quickly moved on; bury the dead and let's get back to talking about the Twins.  Sad.  If it happens in Detroit, it'll be bury the dead and let's get back to talking about the Tigers.  Sad.

Bad roads don't care about your political affiliation.  They are equal opportunity destroyers of all vehicles.

Where do you get the money?  From the taxpayers...as always. Cry

Dems, the one trick ponies (taxes).  Not counting dirty tricks.

And what always kills me on their tax increases Hooter, they may say it's desperately needed for  infrastructure improvements (or something), but cursed if the vote-buying programs always drink at the trough first before anything else is done with the money.  Next year, they're back for more.

And every summer when I drive up to MI, the roads are in very bad shape (for years now).  I spend a week to 10 mostly staying around the homestead and visiting (Monroe/Washtenaw counties), but I still worry about having to replace my shocks after every trip.  My family up there pay it no mind, and if I ride in their cars, it's like sitting on a drier with a cement block in it.

We in VA may never get an R governor (or 2 senators) again.  But state G is still well represented with conservatives from everywhere, except the few big population centers.

Expecting government to use the money it steals in the way it promises it's going to use it is a lot like giving guns, car keys and whiskey to 12 year old boys and not expecting anything amiss to happen.

I feel your pain,
We have a new liberal mush brain governor that is not only saying he wants to raise fuel taxes, he is also talking about implementing toll roads. (we have none)

The worse thing about it is, the conservative that just left office (Walker) left him a surplus, but he says that he needs much more money in his budget to expand all of his social programs.

45 cents per gallon price increase in gas tax is UNREAL and not right at all.  Who is to say that the money collected will ONLY be used for road repairs?  I bet NOT!!!

WI roads EVERY single year after winter and right about now at the end of winter (if it EVER comes that is this year)  are horrible buckling and pot holes galore.  Not like the state of WI is going to repair our vehicles when they fall apart by bottoming out our car and doing damage to the body and suspension parts.

I personally have gone down to our local street crew in our small village on 2 manhole sewer covers that are dipped down some 3-4 inches below the road and told them to ASAP put blacktop filler around that huge dip for ONLY ONCE have I hit them with my cycle and darn near lost it and dropped the bike.  Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns and actually DO something about it talking to the right people in charge vs. the politicians or other officials that will never do anything for you.

Nazi Jersey has raised about 0.35 in the last two yrs and they passed a law that allows the transportation dept to raise it every year now if they want with zero oversight from the state senate, whereas before a raise had to be approved by the senate.

Time frame on her new proposal (monies) was slated to be collected to the 45 cent total over a 2 year period. There as of now has been no indication of an end date after that amount has been collected. No matter what, "IF" this should happen, the east side of the state will see benefit first. That's been common practice in Michigan.

The roads here (like every snow /salt state) are usually terrible ever year late winter / early spring and need attention. But, since our last Govenor dropped the ball I would like to see any collected money spent first to fix the Flint area water crisis, and fix it right! Then go after the roads when that is over. This water issue has all of a sudden disappeared from public view.

Bottom line:  her proposal has to pass the proper governmental channels first. I think that won't happen. She stated that if it doesn't get approved through these governmental agencies she will put to the people for a vote. Not sure if that dog will hunt either?

Her position as Governor hasn't even warmed an office chair and she is already proposing to raise taxes in several areas. I think she is going to find an uphill battle no matter what she does from this point on..

Our new governor in Ohio, a republican, is proposing an $.18 per gallon state gas tax increase.  Our roads and bridges are in terrible shape and were ignored by our previous governor, John Kasich, who by the way may be running for president...again.  The gas tax can ONLY be spent on roads and bridges.  I am certainly not a fan of higher taxes, but, damn, we need to do something about our roads/bridges.  Our state legislature is pressuring for a more modest increase that takes several years to realize.  Will know by the end of the month what is happening.

and isn't it nice how govt actions have cause the accelerated decay of out roads and bridges, so they have to raise taxes 4x more then they need so they can funnel off the rest for their pet projects, etc.
research about the brine its not just salt on the roads and how it rusts out everything.

and now in NJ they are passing a rain tax for anybody with large parking lots and driveways. they say they need it due to salt run off into the waterways. The towns and state are the main users of brine on all the roads, etc.,etc.

I've got you ALL beat with regards to Democrat taxation with just two awful examples of cash grabs from already over taxed law abiding citizens.

I am sorry to say that I have absolutely NO sympathy for anyone, any longer when it comes to their taxation woes.  I went to the press, to radio, to local social media, and nobody cared.  None of my neighbors, who played the system for years had any sympathy on me for doing right and covering THEIR shortfalls.

1)  Town wide reassessment.  Turned out I was paying $2,000 too much.  (That's more than most of America's entire tax bill)  Instead of just saying Thank You and lowering my taxes $2,000 , they held the results until it was time to reassess the next years bills so an increase was already added, THEN they declared they were doing a PHASE IN where those who's taxes were increased did not have to pay the full increase all at once, the increase would be phased in over 5 years.  Now, in order to phase in their increases, they phased in my decrease ! ! ! ! !

2)  Local public schools are at 4 different locations and all are in need of work, supposedly.  To SAVE MONEY and control costs, the plan is move all the schools to one campus.  In order to CONSOLIDATE and CONTROL costs, it will cost $114 MILLION.  The individual school tax bill will increase an average of $1,200 per year for the next 20 years (plus the annual 3% increase on that $1,200 every year).  I'll be gone before it ever gets paid off.  And for those who believe I am selfish in not wanting my school taxes increased by $1,200, the school system is ALREADY the most expensive system in the county spending more than $40,000 per kid/year and measures below average in all things measured that denotes success.

And as for specific taxes paying only for specific things...... never happens.

In NY, they raise bridge tolls and gas taxes to keep fares down on the the inner city buses and subway.  NYers pays some of the highest gasoline taxes and drive on some of the crappiest roads.

Can you imagine, $17.00 to go round trip over a bridge?  Even if it's the Veranzano (longest expansion bridge on the east coast), you're paying $17.00 in about 8 minutes.

And as for taxes having term limits.  Nonsense.  They never go away.

We just got a $32.00 un-voted taxation without representation
Its a  "Safety fee" put on every vehicle, every year registration extortion.
My 75 Laguna, $10.00 registration, $8.00 processing fee, $ 32.00 extortion.
I went from $65.00 to $255.00 for a 5 year tag.
Wanna go off road? $135.00 per year for your sticker, plus registration.
And, I'm told these folks want to get re-elected.

And, I'm told these folks want to get re-elected.

ouch.

here in nazi jersey I pay $65/yr for motorcycle registration same as a midsize car.
 A compact car pays less.

In NY we have a "usage" fee.  If I remember correctly added over $60 to a two-year car registration.

We get used pretty well in Fairfax County VA (above and beyond all State-wide taxes).

(not that we can compete with NYC, where the more accurate verb is raped rather than used.)

Though they can hardly call it the rapist fee.

Our politicians are famous for setting aside our tax for certain projects only to later sneak it into the general fund. NYS is famous for it.
