Like F6John, I was Army Reserve, 1970-1977. While I am proud of my service, what I did was nothing compared to the guys that served in Nam back then, or the guys that have gone to the middle east. Trained as a heavy equipment mechanic (63B20) but since my reserve unit had only a single piece of equipment, ended up a crane operator. Lucky to get assigned to the M60 MG for the motor pool. Got to fire once a year at Camp Perry in Northern Ohio.
Big salute to all you guys that served.

Got me thinking about the designations the Navy gave us. Some of them were kind of strange. My job was maintaining and repairing computers, tape drives, card readers, etc. What this had to do with a helium atom I have no idea. I guess they don’t even have the designation anymore.

I don’t know if the National Guard counts or not, some say yes others not so much. Either way, I was trained on an 8” Howizter SP and later moved to a Tank company. My summer vacations back then we’re at Ft Hood Texas.
That service counts, hold your head high and be proud of what you did. National Guard can be called upon at any time and must always be ready. Rams

Marines, 78-84 CH-53D/E Avionics (AE for you Sailors)
As far as I'm concerned, I never quit serving, just took of the tree suit.
Other than a 6 month tour with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagoya, Japan back in 86, I've been supporting USN, USMC, USN Reserves, USCG, USN (again) and I'm happy to be back with my USMC for my retirement tour.

Or as we called em when I was in-twidgets. What i seem to recall from the electronic techs was while our equipment was indeed old and it was fairly reliable-til we went to sea. Can you spell salt air corrosion? RIDE SAFE.

I've always been a proud Twidget. Loved the work, but never really spent much time with my fellow Twidgets on Liberty overseas. Had a lot more fun with the Boatswain mates and Boiler Techs. They always wanted to party, which fit me pretty good when I was young. Back in those days you just tried to stay out of jail as part of liberty. Not like that anymore. Pretty easy for a young sailor to get in trouble now.

As I understand it doesn't the National Guard take the very Same Oath as U S A U S N U S M C U S A F and U S C G? That Oath all who served Took was a contract that very well could result in our death. I also Feel to This Very moment that as far as I'm concerned That OATH Is STILL Honorable and Binding and NOT been Broken nor will it EVER be broken. May GOD continue to Bless America.

You’re correct and they train the same, not always having the very latest equipment, but a lot of vary talented people have served that way. I sure would have loved a crack at the Abrams’ Tank. I think it played a huge part in both Gulf wars. An advanced fighting machine that you could also cook your eggs on in the desert.

The polling numbers pretty much reflect what I expected. I appreciate the service each and every person accomplished. Having served in both the Army and the US Marines. I am proud of what I did as an officer in the Army but have to admit, I always stand tallest when I hear the Marine Corps Hymn. The polling results of this forum still show what is true: The Few, The Proud, The Marines! Rams

USN. Photographer's Mate. 1975-1981 1) NWEF. Albuquerque. Join the Navy see,,the,,,desert. Actually, it was really bitchen. Naval Weapons Evaluation Facility. Back seat F-4 following Tomahawks to the floor at White sands. Slightly psychotic, damn good pilot who became part of the plane. "I'm gonna make you puke today Czuch". never did. USS Okinawa. Great time, great 30% of the people. Some of whom I still contact. Went some places where we weren't. 3 Westpacks. Went in as E-3, made E-4 in a year, then E-5 after 4. Then Westpac got me back to E-4, followed closely by E-3. I wish I had been smart enough to be smarter and stayed for 25. Great stories though.
