I'd forget about trying to sue someone for it (vet bill).

Me too... when my local friends say I need to "get the guy and make him pay the bill" I just
roll my eyes and wonder what universe they're living in  Wink ... but when Oss said something
like that I figured that was my chance to ask a lawyer.

Another thing to consider is getting the property posted for no hunting/shooting.

I hate those f-you signs... unless this turns out to be a "new thing" I'm just going to
continue believing this is the same awesome place it has always been. There's bad
people everywhere, near me, near you, near everyone... so far they mostly don't
come around here.

Animals that roam freely are always going to be at risk.

That's it in a nutshell. I really can't complain so much that something happened, I'm
just in the middle of dealing with the fact that something did happen. I'm lucky the
other cats don't roam, the dog is kind of trained not to roam but the white cat has
staked out the cutover section as a hunting ground or something. I can't keep them
inside. They're fixed and vetted and fed and the world is a dangerous place for all
of us.

Dogs can be trained.  I dispute anyone says cats can be trained. (they train us)

My brother (out in the country) had serious problems with ATVs and dirt bikes tearing up his property.  But he hates the posted signs as much as you do and would never do it.

My mom nailed it right with my brother 30 years ago, if you want him to do something, tell him to do the opposite thing.   Grin

Instead, he dropped 30 huge trees (of thousands), and has a hi-low that can carry cars around, and he laid the 40' trunks all over the place to make it unfriendly to the riders (and ran them off a bunch of times).

They have coyotes up there, and roaming cats don't come home.  His isn't allowed out.

The best thing he has going for him though is his next door neighbor is a top career FBI cyber security and intellectual property theft chief.  He can do background on anyone (like all the neighbors), and if you go to his door he meets you there before you knock with a silent but serious 140lb Sheppard (along with fences, alarms, cameras, sensors).  He fancies himself a gentleman farmer/landowner and my brother and he are fast friends.  Not a bad neighbor to have.  Brother's helped him out so many times, the guy comes over and plows snow off his quarter mile driveway for him (with the rig my brother put together for him).

I make up silly songs sometimes, usually when I'm driving around... there was a place
I used to pass, a run-down place with trash in the yard and a whole bunch of
no trespassing signs... when I got home I figured out what chords went with this
song:

  I got my property posted
I put the signs up yesterday
I put a sign on every tree
and this is what they say...

  f-you if you come here
  f-you if you stay
f-you if I set foot out my door
and find you in the way

  my property's posted
  24 hours a day
I know that you want to come here
but you better just stay away

They have coyotes up there, and roaming cats don't come home.

Coyotes are one reason I go looking for the white cat when it gets dark...

The other cats are reliably "right there" on the porch or sleeping on the stairs
or whatever. The dog comes in at night too.

The white cat went back to the vet, got blood work and fluids and poked and
prodded and is back home. Back again on Friday to get the drains out. No
zonk-out pain med needed today. She continues to improve, I was sure
she was toast last Friday night... she's worth one of those undervalued
Valkyries now  Tongue ...

Worth every penny.

 cooldude

My last buddy Bear got sick when he was young. He was the dog for my then stepson. I had to take him to the vet. He was 15 months old. (The dog).

After a couple of blood transfusions, bone marrow transplant and me giving him rubber gloved chemo daily for 3 weeks he lived for another 13 1/2 years.

Worth every penny.

Thank you UGA vet school and a then, new experimental treatment.

We brought Delta home for a couple of days, got her to eat and drink and do both of
those other things  cooldude ... brought her back to be checked up yesterday (Friday)
and they kept her so they could reopen her wound and de-ick it... they've packed it
with sugar, something you can google... if things continue to go well she can
come home again in a few days... I talked to Wimp on the phone the other day,
I'm pretty sure some of my Tennessee buddys don't think my elevator goes all the way
to the top floor...

Working or retired, we all have a certain amount of disposable income, after necessities. (econ 101)

We all have things that matter to us.

My freedom is more important than pet's company (and they must be inside at my house) (not a money issue, a freedom issue).

But if I had one, I get it fixed up if it needed it.

Nothing wrong with your elevator Mike.

On the other hand, I've been fighting a (small) plumbing issue at my house.  I suck as a plumber (among other things), but having a plumber come to your house in my area costs about as much as vet bills (or worse).  I'll either fix it it live without it.  I have the money, but I'm not that much into income redistribution, as a matter of principle.

This leaky part does not provide me any company or comfort, it just pisses me off.   Grin

I do my own plumbing, as well as HVAC and appliance maintenance/repair.  Have the tools and skill to fix most anything.  And if I need instruction, I can find DIY fix-it info on youtube for most anything around the house.  But rarely I'll call in an expert.

On the free-ranging animals - not a good idea around here.  There are coyotes and foxes and eagles and hawks.  Small animals won't roam for long.  Though I have had a cat decide to put footprints on my bike seats when I f'd up and left the bike barn door open.  Pissed me off but it was my fault.  Imagine how P-O'd you'd be if a roaming cat sharpened his claws on your $1200 Russell seat.  Of course if you leave it out especially overnight it's your fault - but even so.  However I'm not one to shoot a potential pet.  I am going to deal with the problem however - by finding out who the owner is and warning them to confine their cat.  Failing that, a live trap and return of the pet.  Another incidence and probably live-trapped and taken to the animal shelter.

Skunks and squirrels OTOH had better stay the F away around here.  The bird feeders are for BIRDS.  BTW, on that note, sprinkle bird seeds with hot pepper powder - the birds don't care but mammals can't stand it.

We regularly get neighbor's dogs who escape their pens and run on the property.  Don't mind much as long as they don't make a habit of our place being their toilet. Stepping in dog Ń•hit in my front lawn is unacceptable. That happened some years ago so I put a BB gun in the shop.  Not a high-velocity or lethal one, just a regular toy that stings.  The dog took a dump - right when he squatted I stung him in the butt.  He never did it again.

Sympathize with your cat's being shot.  That's just the wrong thing to do.

Cats are actually more intelligent than humans but they consider it below themselves to build or develop their own technology.  Cats live to be served by the lesser species.

Delta is gone.  Cry ... she seemed like she might make it at first, but she didn't
have a good weekend... she went from getting better to suffering, we put her
down this morning. She was the unusual sweet cat who always wanted to be
there with us. She joined us on 20 minute walks through the woods. She jumped
out from behind the bushes and scared the dog every chance she got. She
was always with me outside unless I was running the chainsaw or the weedeater
or something. She made me happy, and I'll miss her...

Bonnie and I found Delta down in the woods about five years ago, it was
forecast to be around 12 degrees that night... I built this ramp for Bonnie
to use the last year she was with us. Bonnie passed around three
years ago, Delta and Bonnie are buried side by side out by the woods now...
