why have people disabled the factory vacuum line when changing to a pingel petcock? is it just one more thing to go wrong?

If a desmog is done and a non-vacume petcock is used the vacume nipples can all be plugged, less chance of vacume leaks. Then too, most don't want to pay for the vacume model pingle. The vacume model is good insurance, but then we're back to the one more thing to go wrong problem.

.... if daphragm splits there is risk of gas filling cylinder through vacuum line - pure mechanical petcock removes the risk of this happening....

Please remember that pure mechanical petcocks also fail. Especially the ones with o-rings or rubber like seals. Buy quality for longer life under normal use.

Crude or rust in the gas tank is a failure enabler, especially for those petcocks that have o-rings or rubber like seals.

Crude or rust in the gas tank is also the major contributor to carb the float valve failure, which is the final link in obtaining Hydro-lock.

Vac caps also fail. I plug where ever possible with a bolt. I have had tham "pop" off while decelerating hard. I do not have a single rubber vac line or cap left on my bike for this reason.

just get a bolt that's slightly larger in diameter then the ID of the tube and shove it in. Interference fit works pretty well.

RLD stated he had NO vac hose or lines to leak.  I understand putting a bolt in a hose, I do that on my desmog hoses.  But, if I understand  right, he is removing the vac hoses from the intakes, and plugging the nipple with a bolt.  I was wondering if he just screwed it in, or removed the intakes, put a silicone smeared bolt in, and then put back on.

You should not mess with the hose barbs on the intake runners because you need them to synchronize the carburetors.

Anyone that thinks a bolt is a good plugging source for a rubber hose is oblivious to the reality of the threads present on the bolt.  Threads leak.  Why plumbers use thread sealer should make that evidently clear!

Honda used philips screws with aluminum washers on some Goldwings!!!
