Hey all, My divorce from my wife was finalized last week. She kicked me to the curb and moved her boyfriend in. She is a paralegal and played every dirty trick in the book. NEW JERSEY. Good news, I managed to come out with my Valk in one piece. Bad news, the Ex kept my title "she can't find it" I paid it off years ago, I went to motor vehicle to get a duplicate. They will not issue it because it shows a lein on it from X-finance company. I need a lein release. Since I paid it off X-finance has merged with Y who was bought out by Z. I got a lein release from Z after a million calls. However motor vehicle will not release the title because X-finance is not mentioned in the release. I have a paper trail proving the merger/take-overs of the finiance company, but its not good enough. I have my bike and never plan to sell it, but having the title to MY property would be nice. I remember a while ago someone mentioned an agency that can aquire motorcycle titles. I'm not looking to do anything shady. I just want what is mine. Thanks

I have two suggestions, you're probably not gonna like either one of them:
1. Ask the DMV what it will take. If you don't get answers from the "clerk" at the window, ask to talk to their supervisor and chase the question up the food chain until you find someone who will listen to your situation and can help you do something about it (or can tell you how to resolve it).
2. You're really not gonna like this one -- hire an attorney and pay the professional to jump through the legal hoops. This will be the most expensive, but is practically guaranteed to get your title into your hands.
A couple of questions though -- the DMV knows the title is in your name but has a lien... can't they issue a duplicate with the lien indicated on it? And do you have the receipts for payment and "cancelled" (completed, fullfilled, whatever) promissory note that went with the loan that you paid off? You might be able to use that as proof that the lien has been satisfied.
Best of luck with all this...

I'm in the Auto biz and have seen this problem before... The RMV requires a lien release if there "ever was" a lien on the vehicle. It's a pain... but policy. Suggestions" 1) Call Z bank back and hopefully talk with someone nice... tell them your new dilema... ask if they could send a new lien release with a short paragraph that might say... " Z Bank has no interest in the aforementioned vehicle as the lien was paid on __/__/____ through X bank which we aquired on __/__/____. Please let this serve as the true and only Lien Release for this vehicle. Any questions, please feel free to call Z bank at ___-___-____. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. 2) As has been mentioned... bypass the clerk and speak with a supervisor/manager at RMV with all your documentation. Talk nice and respectful.

And hope you get to talk to a male supervisor, preferably one who has been divorced. He'll be more help than you can imagine.

Here in Washington state we have a form to file for a lost title...as long as you are on the title, as legal or registered owner..it's as good as the original title...check and see if you don't have one in your state...most DMV's have websites where you can find this out...

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/LostStolen.htmTheir website says: Get a duplicate title for a vehicle, financed* Visit your local motor vehicle agency and complete an application for a duplicate title Show current or expired registration or proof of insurance Present statement from the current/past lien holder that includes the following: Owner’s name Vehicle information (make, year and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)) Statement from the lien holder stating that the original title is not in his/her possession and that the vehicle was paid in full Pay $60 fee (payable by American Express® card, MasterCard®, Visa® card, check, money order or cash) If you are unable to visit your local agency, you may mail all of the above to the address on the application for duplicate title *Note: Duplicate titles issued with a lien will be mailed to the lien holder. So if they mail the Duplicate titles issued with a lien to the lien holder, can you get it routed to the correct place to get the proper release?

UPDATE. My son stopped by today with MY TITLE! He found it in an envelope in the back of the bathroom linen closet. How it got there is beyond me. Now I know I will never have to part her out. Not that I would sell her, I actually bought a second Valk same year so I could have a title. Now I have 2 Valks and 2 titles (in my safe). Life is good.

I've found my phone in the fridge, but never my title in the linen closet.
Maybe it got set on some towels being folded and stacked from the dryer, then covered, then moved to the closet.

A lot of things could have happened to get that title in that closet. I'm just happy it did not fall into a shredder. It actually stopped me from trading it in on a nice looking new Street Glide. I know I would have regretted it. It's just a nice feeling knowing nobody can take my ride.

I remember responding to you back in 2010... Glad it was found by your son. If it was found by your ex... it probably never would have been found... so to speak.
All is good.

So if he renewed plates every year he was still able to ride it.
