Think I've read all there is to read about the same-old gear whine.
It recently seems to have gotten worse, maybe just needs an oil change. Even with my half helmet on, its Really much louder.
I have been wearing ear plugs, sure that helps, but sometimes the plugs stay out, then it gets pretty bad.
So has any few people found a way to add that sound deadening material across the top of the tranny? On all those other articles, nobody mentioned What the material was, or Exactly where it was placed.

You know, I don't think it should be that bad. Our trans are noisy, kinda clunky, some even say hard to shift. But I have never paid attention to either of my valks in 5th gear. I can't hear it in another words.
Maybe something is wrong??? Has anyone else with a valk looked at it and rode it? Are you sure its the trans and not the final drive?
Anyone? anyone???

The only mention of sound deadening material I ever saw was for those that had the Kury transmission covers. Seems they magnify the sounds you are talking about so they used spray undercoating (or similar) on the underneath side of the covers and then put them back on

I am running 10/40 regular Valvoline and have never noticed any noise. Will have to listen today to see if I hear any whine at all.

I'v noticed the whine between 50 and 60 mph so maybe you just need to ride faster Seriously though, over 60 the whine does go away entirely and I use 10w40 full synthetic Castrol motorcycle oil. Also, I've undercoated the underneath side of my Kuryakyn tranny covers, alternator cover, rear brake cover (by right driver's footpeg), and the front and rear fenders.

Yeah, I shoulda mentioned at first that the whine was between 50 and 60 mph, in 5th.
It seems to be about 10% louder this week. Dunno why!
Below 50mph, quiet, above 60mph, quiet. Maybe I just oughtta go and put some material, (sumthin like underpad or ten-test) on the tranny-top, see what happens. (I'll be careful not to let it melt)
Ridin faster than 60mph is the answer, but on rural roads, that can earn you a speed award. Not needin any more 'o those.

After 253K miles, I'm pretty used to it now. However, it is still most notable under any kind of load in 5th up to 55 mph or 2500 RPMs. On mine the tranny "howl" stops completely at 2600 RPMs, regardless of load. I also noticed that the most sound reduction came with a good heavy coating of automotive undercoating on the backsides of both transmission covers, besure to include "rubber gaskets" on the bolts that hold the tranny covers in place. The gaskets did make a difference! I do not use synthetic oils, I have never been able to tell any difference, however, I do use a high grade 20/50wt. That tranny noise is just one of the characteristics of our Phat ladies. I know what Honda's explanation for the noise was(is) (straight cut gears for strength). For me that just doesn't wash, because Honda makes many other gears boxes that are at least as strong (GW's and 1800 VTX's for example) that are just as reliable and are QUITE!

All three of my Valks whine between 50 & 60 mph in 5th. All are Tourers and all have the same synthetic oil. My 98 is considerably louder than the 99's. The 98 has the least miles at around 25K, the 99's have 36K and 115k. Yeah, the girls whine, but at least the don't say things like "You never take me anywhere" or "When are we going to go to dinner?"

Additional short follow-up note-- I went out for a short "Tranny-Howl" test ride and in 5th gear with a load (ya' know like with a passenger on board, pulling a trailer or going up a hill) the howl started at 2000 rpms and went away at 2100 rpms.

I think this thread - like many - get sidetracked by tales of 'our bikes' notorious whine. The OP said that the noise was INCREASING, not that he hadn't heard the whine.
My Valk just started doing the same thing as the OP's - producing more noise over a short period. I've had the bike for 6 years and have put about 30,000 miles on it, so I'm familiar with its native cacophany.
I am looking for some information as to why. The final drive is serviced regularly with Moly Guard and Mobil 1 products - at every tire change, and usually about 3,000 miles in between, which is what it takes to keep the splines rust free and looking good. I always use new thrust washers and follow the prescribed removal/installation process, so it shouldn't be due to lack of care or incorrect service procedures.
I'm not hearing any unusually clunking or feeling increased vibrations. It just sounds like the tranny is making more noise. I'm familiar with what the final drive sounds like as it approaches a needed service. This is not that, it seems to emanate from the motor / transmission. I always use Mobil 1 Synth and change it regularly. The current oil has about 30 days and 700 miles on it.
Any ideas as to the cause / solution would be greatly appreciated.

I should add that mine doesn't seem to be limited to 5th gear. ... and I see that it's been so long since I posted that my account was reset and my post count is back to 2. A lesson... don't neglect you VRCC account for 3 or 4 years

Was out cruisin around last night with a lady friend, had that huge whine again, wondered if she was gonna tell me it was too loud, but she never did. I've been trying different positions for my MS batwing, then it occurred to me that the howl was reflecting off the batwing, and concentrating right at my head. Maybe that explains the louder sound. Gonna go with 20w50 next change, see what happens.
The straight-cut gear thing is certainly the cause, seems only some sound absorbing material is going to help.

This isn't the first time that I've seen somethng about gear whine ...BUT..I haven't heard a Valkyrie quiet enough to hear any gear whine..my old goldwing, now that had gear whine and no exhaust noise to speak of. I like the Valkyrie sounds better, hehe. Could also be that I might need to consider some hearing aides.

20W50 ought to be the oil to quiet transmission noise.
When it got hot in Utah one year the whine was wicked loud. Still with the 20W50.
Stopped for gas and couldn't believe how extremely loud it had become.
Kept riding with no ill affects.
Never looked back.
