In a local auto parts store? I know it has to be silicate free, but want to know what is the best brand without having to go to a dealer.

Thanks!  Smiley

Prestone Dexcool mixed with distilled water from the grocery store. The Honda car dealer sells OEM premixed by the gallon much cheaper than MC coolant sold by the quart.

Funny thing about this. My mechanic says that "any" premix is fine? He said that with today's technology there is nothing contained in any antifreeze that will hurt a thing? Anyone have any "result" of using just "regular antifreeze"' I like pictures.... Roll Eyes

i work for an automotive supply company. We make all the heat exchanger components, radiators, condensers, evaporators and heaters. I am in the Materials Engineering Laboratory. Having said that, all coolants are not created equal. A class action law suit existed between Delphi and GM over a change in coolants to the Dexcool long live. It ate the head gaskets. Sometimes the coolant just is not compatable to the little things that keep things cool, like certain metals rubbers, etc... Stop trying to save a few dollars and get what is recommeded. A gallon will do you a life time and won't harm the system in the long run.

I also used the prestone 50/50 pre-mix yellow bottle as shown above bought at walmart when they had the rebate on bottle if you buy one gallon jug, mail in the rebate to receive the 2nd gallon jug for free, great deal and has been 3-4 years now since changed the coolant.  Will wait until a few more years around 6 years total (guessing 20K+ more mileage) to change it up again.  Not that hard to do and I figure the OEM stuff was probably in my bike doing just fine (although was not correct color, more dingy/darker) from 2001 to 2009 (8 years and 15K miles).  I think the bottle says 5 years or 100K and don't know too many cycle riders doing 100K in 5 years so will wait to change another 1-2 years past 5 years.  Others will disagree though changing it out every 2-3 years.

Evans waterless permanent coolant.  Expensive, not local, but corrosion and cooling system care are permanently eliminated. http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/extras/car-care/waterless-engine-coolant/index.shtml

Dexcool took about 40-60,000 miles to eat the head gaskets that were not compatible with the coolant. Lower Ph. Also, don't forget the gaskets on the radiator tanks. you spent alot of money on that bike. Hell, you spent more on a pair of gloves than the correct coolant. just because Prestone says it's safe... They don't know what the non metallics are made of in that bike. green isn't always right. you have been fore warned!!!

I used this Honda coolant  and ordered it from these guys  http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=1416&str=2&mdl=&mdy=

My Valk told me she likes it very much. She makes me keep an extra quart in her saddlebag.

Thanks guys for all the help! I learned a lot and just so happens I found some Honda Pro I ordered a couple years ago. I just put a chrome radiator grill and noticed I was losing some coolant because I must have kinked the overflow because it was coming out around the cap. I know what to use now when I decide to drain and flush the system. Btw, I did not poison any cats while topping it off!!   2funny      cooldude

It's funny that 10 years ago we were discussing the horrors of Dexcool. And yet not one Valk has ever had an issue that I am aware of.  Roll Eyes

I used to use Dexcool I don't use any now in my blower bikes, and the rest get what ever is on the shelf. I only buy silicate free so there is a few different bottles on the shelf of my shop, including some Dexcool.

Oh and global warming, climate change, or what ever they are calling it this week is BS too.  2funny
