If you cant wait in line with the other vehicles you probably shouldnt be on the road. At least take the shoulder. I know how much it sucks to be stuck in traffic on a bike, been there several times. But if a bike was coming up between me and another car id move over and not let them through. Yes I know im a dick.

i never said i'd run anyone over. and my other post said all it would take is a "DICK" like myself to open their door. Not that i would open my door and damage my truck. So no i'm not sorry for my views on this. People get road rage over nothing so i can only imagine how it would be with lane splitting.

Kind of like pulling over on the shoulder to let a faster car by on a two lane.   TX does it all the time.  Try it in almost any other state, and you get a Performance Award from the Highway Patrol!

I wouldnt be sorry if they crashed and I wouldnt give a crap either . The element of proof comes way before prison and "accidents" wont put you there . Unless youre fool enough to say " ya I tried to kill him with my car !"  This whole subject is stupid .  Oh , but hey , as always , just my opinion .

I lane split in my 5years military service in CA.  Only on the freeways, and only when stopped or terrible stop an go.

And I'm here to tell you.... splitting thru stopped cars is way easier and safer than splitting thru moving, weaving, wandering, texting, cars.  You were not supposed to exceed the flow of traffic by more than 5mph, so splitting stopped cars was supposed to be at a rolling 5mph..... NOT 30-55mph.

Imagine taking an MSF course where the cones moved around while you rode thru.

I worked and commuted to Indianapolis for 10 years . I hate cities and and avoid them at all costs.  If I had to go around Stopped cars I  would rather ride in the grass . Ive watched lane splitting videos and its insane . I would rather live in a smaller town or city and make less $ than a big city like Atlanta  ,NY , Chicago or LA. Its not worth the stress to me .

Completely agree with you Regis on all huge cities.

Actually, there will come a time when they all need blown up and plowed under for soil improvement.

Any day now would be fine with me.

The origin of virtually all social ills and moral decay, rampant crime, rampant social spending (after taxing the pants off the more rural working parts of every state), the heart of FSA and all socialist politicians.......... What's not to blow up?

Isn't it about time for you to sell your city house and move down here?

Isn't it about time for you to sell your city house and move down here?

Boy Mike, I have been pushing and pulling myself on this issue for some time.

I have made a smart move in staying in the short term as a good deal of equity lost in the bubble has returned (here in lala land).  I won't spend my savings on a house, and should be in a position to pay for a new little place with my current equity alone.  No mortgage ever again.

I've lived here longer than anywhere in my life now, there is comfort in what you know, my little house is perfect for just me.

On the other hand, I dislike my suburban jungle, traffic, politics, taxes, cost of living, and noise.

But selling, finding a new location and place, giving or throwing away half my chit, and moving the other half is a very daunting and high stress enterprise.

I've decided the only way I'll ever get off the dime is to get my self on the road South, and spend some time scouting around in some areas I have in mind, with feet on the ground (not looking at Zillow on-line) to see what's out there, what my money can buy, and maybe find some place that moves me enough to make the big jump.

I love E TN, but also would like to look around the SW corner of VA as well.  Some little one-man spot out in the country with a good garage or outbuilding.  Low/no maintenance, no basement to flood, no stairs/2d story, a nice view of the hills, a place I can shoot my rifles, and with great riding beginning at the end of the driveway.

I plan to start looking this Spring.  If I don't start soon, it may never happen.

Start selling stuff you don't want. Craigslist etc.

Start boxing up stuff you want to keep.

By the time you are ready to move you'll have nearly everything cleared out packed ready to move.

Well crap Paul, I want most of what I have.  Grin

I'm not really married to any furniture (more a question of what any new place I find will need from my home), plan to leave all appliances behind.  What I could sell stuff for would (mostly) not be worth the hassle of selling.  When I need to go, I can call Goodwill, etc and do donations and throw/give away the rest I don't need.  To me furniture has always been expensive junk, and in a lifetime, all I have is maybe two nice oak items.  My computer sits on a piece of home made reloading bench with two by fours and plywood.

Remember, the wife left with half awhile back, and I replaced nothing.... except that 600lb treadmill (what was I thinking? LOL).  First time I could ever walk around here in the dark without running into things.

If and when I ever find a place I want, I can go pretty fast.  Long as I list for fair market and not get greedy, my house will sell quickly too.

Sounds like you are halfway moved  cooldude

I thinl the shedding and packing is the toughest part of a house move.

I have sold a lot of stuff. If I haven't used it in a  year or so it's gone.

I like to be clutter free, makes it easier to keep clean and tidy.

Lane Splitting? Inherently dangerous and anyone that tells you different is just fooling themselves. Here in Brazil it's done on highways, side streets, alleys, anywhere a bike can squeeze between two cars. At highway speeds, slow speed, stopped...they don't care. Been here working for 3 years....have seen at least a dozen dead riders on the road from the practice. The latest just this past Wednesday.

Want to lane split? Got a family? Make sure your life insurance is paid up.

Don't like lane splitting?  Don't do it.  Don't like to see others lane split?  Don't live where it is legal to lane split.  Problem solved.

The same people who are in this thread talking about how dangerous and foolhardy it is to lane split wouldn't want to hear the same argument when it comes to wearing helmets.  Don't be hypocritical about personal freedom.

I've been a dick and moved over far enough in my truck or ambulance in stopped interstate traffic to make the 'I'm gonna go around everyone' guy drive in the grass.  Evil But then again I'm the dick who will hug the berm and flip gravel or slushy snow up behind me for the tail gators.  Evil
Since I'm a legal gun owner I'd doubt I would have trouble in CA, since I would not be visiting.  crazy2

all depends on where location is.

I'm with most here and don't feel it is right to have a cycle cut in front of dozens of people but not going to get pissy about it.  I might now if a car tries to do it from behind me though.  Road rage is real and getting worse and worse so are inattentive drivers with those darn cell phones glued to their ears.  That cell phone crap really is ticking me off on almost a daily occurrence I just blow by anyone that I see has a cell phone to their ear since 95% of them are not paying attention or driving too slow or over the lines.

Unfortunately in the UK filtering (as we call it) is essential. Without it you'd not get anywhere.  We get traffic jams on country lanes, never mind cities 2funny.

As the article says, there are dangers, and I have no wish to join my Hedgehog brethren who have 'gone Frisbee' on our roads.... but being able to do this is one of the main reasons I have a bike. Also I was trained to do it by the Police. police

In Rome it was like the start of a road race at every red light as the scooters and small cc motorcycles
filter to the front  We saw 3 accidents just on the way from airport to hotel  I did not rent a burgman in Rome, just wasnt worth it

Still, I rented a scooter in FLorence and rode into the countryside and in the city
For the most part the city stuff was pretty uncomfortable with the crazy drivers ignoring most rules of the road and riding 2 up in the rain on the cobblestones was interesting to say the least

In NY if the expressway is stopped I will filter thru at 5 mph  NO WAY I could be caught even if I passed a cop just aint gonna happen   I commute about 8 months a year on the police bmw bike which is narrower than a valk

Only used shoulders a few times with Gman on the NY Thruway (87) coming east to the TZ bridge for about 4 miles, saved an hour at least and after 10+ hrs on the bike in the heat it was a chance we were willing to take   At least on the Valk I am higher than most vehicles and can see the LEO's

Lots of angry little people feel that way about motorcycling in general.

For those of you that feel strongly about it in a negative way, here's something to keep your blood pressure up:

And for those of you in places that permit it, keep motoring on as safely as possible and hope some of these folks don't vacation near you.

Nice Regis.   Don't come to CA, we don't need people with such anti-motorcycle attitudes.

I drove back in my car from Northern CA today, 400 mi in rain.  Over Grapevine on I-5 (mtn pass well known to anyone who has spent time here) and into a 50 mile traffic jam on 210.  I was in fast lane adjacent to carpool lane going 10-20 mph and lots of bikes were lane splitting to get through traffic, including CHP. I moved over to give them plenty of room but did see a few drivers "seem" to try and block lane a little, though the bikes moved right around them with no problem.

Let me be clear about one thing....I do not wish any harm upon anyone that chooses the practice of lane splitting. I am merely relating what I have personally witnessed here in Brazil over the last couple of years. The last being a couple, dead, underneath a rapid transit bus that legally changed lanes while the rider was speeding thru lanes. Of course, they ride down here in shorts and flip flops as well.
