A date which will live in infamy. I've listened to F D Rs speech a couple times thru the years. Then he asked Congress to declare that a State of War existed between the U S of A and the empire of japan. If a young man was 15 years of age when he signed up in 1941 that MAN is 88 today. Time is doing to the "Greatest Generation" what the enemy Could NOT. I've been to Pearl Harbor and Hickman Field where tangible evidence of 1941 was very evident when I was there in 1964. I've sailed on battle fields where NO tangible evidence of the war could be seen-on the surface. I've been taken to those undersea battle fields thru modern electronics in my living room. To all those who lost their lives that day and thru the ensuing years in what was known after it finished as WWII-may you FOREVER R I P. I owe all these man and women a debt I can never repay. THANK YOU.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt - Declaration of War Address - "A Day Which Will Live in Infamy"powered by Aeva

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

Indeed thanks Old2soon for the post

I think that all of our armed forced fought to win

But I agree that the same can not be said for our leaders since that time

Note that Roosevelt was not a veteran yet eloquently finessed the declaration
of war out of Congress and kept the lid on the Manhattan Project so that
Truman was able to finish the job.

Sad that our present leader has shown no hope of a similar ability

Very good post thanks, I watched Its a wonderful life with Jimmy Stewart and thought how sad things have changed so dramatically. Our leaders are not leaders they are dictators lost is the art of negotiation and cooperation for the greater good of the people.

I feel the politics on all party's of all branches prospered after WWII. Considering after the fact that a majority of senators, representatives,  etc all served in the war together. Agenda could be made and party's work together to better the American dream. I hope someday we can get that again in our nation's capital, instead of silver spoon fed millionaires.

We have a potus that never wore a Military Uniform. We have a sorry assed traitor as sec state. I flew and served with BROTHERS I would have died for. Whether we fought the aircraft or prepared the ship to fight there was a closeness with the crew that I have no sense of with the elected buffoons currently in power. They seem only interested in furthering THEIR own agendas. Trying to explain this to someone who has never worn a United States Military Uniform is like trying to explain a motorcycle ride to someone who has never ridden. Again my thanks to the Greatest Generation-I owe a debt to them I can NEVER repay. RIDE SAFE.

That attack was the reason 5 of my uncles joined the service.  Dad came for a rather large family, 15 children.   My dad and another brother were already serving.    4 of the 7 made it home.

Our government was stupid when it came to all the warnings about the attack right in their faces, and they ignored all of them. Should have never have happened.  tickedoff   I've read books and watched numerous flicks about this and irritates me to no end to see what happened.
When the Japanese concluded the attack they knew they were in for some real crap. But just not to the extent they got it. My heart goes out to all veterans!

My street is 6 blocks long.   2 flags fly on it.   Mine and my next door neighbor's.

Right after 1/1/15, I'll change my flag for a new one.    It is getting pretty well bleached out by the sun.

Mine flies 24/7, the neighbors flies from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM then he takes it down.

He doesn't have a light on his.   Mine has a nice LED light and is on a timer.   It comes n as it gets dark and turns off as it get light out.
