For most all employed and working Americans, high taxes on (absolutely) necessary gasoline is regressive and counterproductive.  Same as taxing grocery store food.  You are not supposed to tax necessities, or not much.

Only people on welfare should pay high gas taxes, unless they can prove they are actually looking for work.

But if you think about it, the greedy G's of this country have figured out how to tax motor vehicles in many creative ways.  Gas, oil, tires (over and above sales taxes), tire turn in (epa) fees, road tax, required insurance, required safety inspections, personal property taxes, tags, registration, titles, title transfers, custom plates (annual fees), trailers, toll roads, and many, many more.

You'd think they wanted us to go back to horses.

Has anyone taken the time to figure out exactly how much tax they pay each year ?  Total it ALL up, its scary !   Its a whole lot of beer money or enough to run a small country.

It would take almost 12 days for a million seconds to elapse and 31.7 years for a billion seconds. Therefore, a trillion seconds would amount to no less than 31,709.8 years.

A trillion seconds ago, there was no written history. The pyramids had not yet been built. It would be 10,000 years before the cave paintings in France were begun, and saber-toothed tigers were still prowling the planet.

                  that's a lot ....         coolsmiley

gas is dropping because the saudis are dropping the barrel cost. they are dropping it so we will not drill for our own oil and keep depending on them, even tho it cost more than they are selling it for,, then when we get very dependent on them for the oil again the cost is going to increase so much we will pay 15 dollars a gallon for gas, we will be caught totatly off guard and we will crumble,, this will happen in just a few years,,i have my safe place all in order now..

We are becoming a leading oil producer, no thanks to our administration. Our currant drilling is on private land so if we get a good change in our next administration we could easily become one of the biggest oil producers.
Add in a couple more refineries and we could tell the middle east to kiss our back side.
If we lift the moratoriums on natural gas drilling, we could drill far/much more and even become less dependent on oil.
Hopefully our next administration will be more coal friendly and stop putting these business' out of business.
I look forward to the day we can bankrupt the middle east and let them go back to living in tents and herding camels.
With this false lowering of gas prices during this phony economy the DOW is going nuts. And, I mean nuts in the wrong direction.

In New York and it's immediate suburbs, taxes and tolls on cars, roads, bridges, and tunnels are used to supplement the NYC buses and subways.  A $13.00 toll to go back and forth over a bridge is used to keep the subway/bus fare at $2.50 because in NYC, only poor people take mass transit and only rich people drive.   uglystupid2   And if they dare hint at raising the bus fare by 25 cents, the public goes nuts, but a $2.00 increase for a trip that takes 45 seconds to go over a bridge is OK.  (A radio host said that the cost per second makes going over a bridge one of the most expensive things you'll probably do all day)

If you really want to get yourself crazy, try and find all the things your taxes and tolls go to subsidize.

I read that there's a tax on every cell phone bill and electric/gas bill that subsidizes NYC's mass transit as well.

And they want more and more redistribution.

I have nothing personal against N Y or the people that live there EXCEPT how cursed MUCH it costs to move around in that state or how cursed MUCH it costs to live there. Somewhere outside of N Y C there is a toll collection for 18 wheelers ONLY. Might or might not include buses. I had the electronic toll pay box so I don't know what it costs for an 18 wheeler round there anymore. And DO NOT get me started on the N J Turnpike or jug handles or parkways!  uglystupid2 Most of the companies I drove for wanted me to fill up my diesel tanks in Pa. before hitting New England or in Az. Before hitting lala land!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

You do realize that the majority of the people using mass transit in NYC are the working middle class . And they do shout real loud not to raise their fair. It's tough enough to make ends meet with the high cost of living in the five boroughs. MANY RICH people also commute to the city using mass transit and once there they either hail a taxi to get around or use  the subways. It is a cheap and quick way to get around any time of the day or night. Subsidized? yes it is but millions of people use it daily, usually more than once or twice a day.

BTW the PA just raised the toll to $14.00.

Yes, I do realize that everybody uses the mass transit system (notice the crazy thingy next to my rich vs. poor sentence), but, if millions use it, why can't those that use it pay for it?  Why do they have to raise taxes elsewhere, on people who aren't using the system, to subsidize it?  Why do I have to subsidize mass transit with my cell phone and electric bill when millions use the system every day?  I pay for it when I use it, why do I have to pay for it when I don't?  Again, redistribution bullshit.

I believe that each "service" should be self sufficient.  If the service needs more money, then those using the service should pay more for it.  Leave everyone else alone, they're already paying for their own stuff. they shouldn't have to pay for others as well.

When I was still residing in Il. I lived in Lake County Il. which did NOT encompass Chicago. Chicago is in Cook County Il. One of the Chicago aldermen decided the folks that lived in Lake County NEEDED to help Cook County to pay for the mass transit system.  Roll Eyes We would have gotten-NO city busses-NO electric rail system-another words they wanted our MONEY with out having any of the side benefits of supporting C T A-Chicago Transit Authority. Typical political triple speak. Thank GOD it got shot down. I left in 1978 and have not looked back. RIDE SAFE.

Had nothing to do with "redistribution". I think those fees went into effect during the Pataki administration. It was hotly debated at the time of how to keep the NY State and City infrastructure from further crumbling. Now, if there wasn't so much graft, corruption, government waste and political cronyism, we probably wouldn't have had to pay all these unnecessary fees.

And unfortunetly with the GWB toll at $14.00 it's not even economical to fill up in Jersey unless you live in Rockland County. (Just wanted to get back on the topic).

The 'new' yearly budget is over a trillion.

Our deficit is over 18 trillion !  Think our grand, great grand and great great grand kids can pay that off for us ?

We'll probably be speaking Indian, Chinese or who knows what before this is over.

Gee, just think. We were only 7 trillion in debt 7 years ago.
