There was a thread about the Cloud, Some don't understand the subtlety of companies and what they are doing in structuring and forming society as a whole. So I wanted to offer this to all to think about one small example of how we will willingly accept our own down fall. All companies do it but Google posing as champions is the most recent and subtle example of good marketing and control. We have a company that's business model is advertising not operating systems, like Microsoft or Apple making a operating system. While Microsoft and Apple do advertising its primary business model is a operating system with marketing now a as a second.

Google/ Android/Chrome was made for Google to have a platform to push their products and make money from advertising. Thats It, if they help all in the end then ok but Google knew that to be number one it had to have something that demanded their products. So it made Android, Chrome to achieve this. Andorid is very popular and below is the reason it was made. But we willingly accept not only cloud the next step but being listened to and marketed to by using these systems. Pretty creative if you ask me, but this is a example of how we use and adopted something without really knowing and WILLINGLY ADOPTED IT. This is how marketers have been allowed into our private lives and why nothing is really private anymore. This is how we in the US will fall and adopt rule under our own self serving convenience. Yet we sit and wonder how did this happen to us?

Google really entered a new area with Android – one that could easily fail. We spoke to Allen Nogee, Research Director of In-Stat's Wireless Technology Group, to ask why Google chose to create Android.

"In the last few years, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Intel have all tried to get heavily into the phone business," he explained, "and if you dig a bit deeper, their motives are all different. So Google is a company that makes its money from advertising, currently mainly from advertising to those that use a desktop or laptop computer.

This is how Google financed the projects that it gives away for free – its revenue from advertising. On a PC, the browser is the gateway to the web, which is why Google, Apple and Microsoft all make browsers and give them away for free.

Android, Inc. was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger), Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.), Nick Sears (once VP at T-Mobile),and Chris White (headed design and interface development at WebTV[23]) to develop, in Rubin's words, "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29

Android's source code is released by Google under open source licenses, although most Android devices ultimately ship with a combination of open source and proprietary software. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance—a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.

So when we have personal devices and cannot opt out of advertising and cloud and wonder how our personal information is sent to a company we will know how. I only picked Google its not the only one but it did set the business model and privacy standards in the past years. They are creative well financed and are getting more and more diverse. Their server farms rivals the governments and they have many throughout the country and abroad.  If you want advertising on Maps then you have to pay Google. If you want to search with them then you have to accept cookies and advertising. In searches the suggestions are not by accident or random and they have, on social issues, that they dont support  skewed the search results. They want to be into everything we do literally and will willingly help so what does it really cost us? On closing, why is GPS location linked to most apps? Why do apps need to know your location when they have nothing to do with location??? Why do all pics put locations on the pics unless you opt out? Turn off cell information for your I phone on most settings and see how many times it reminds you that its off. A major invasion of privacy and at what cost?

This is not a rant against Google its more of a call to action to be more unified and alert to the things that shape our society. To understand what is offered to us in good faith is not always good faith. To see the truth in how companies are patterning our society and we just accept it. They have plenty of money to lobby and bend the ears of Senators and business men alike. We are not to concerned about things as long as we can have a life and get most of what we want. That is why there is a lot of loose ends in government that favors business and those at the top.

While nothing is perfect, these are the best solutions I've found.  Make sure you have working knowledge of firewalls before blindly diving in.

If not rooted use No Root Firewall.  If rooted use AFWall+.  Both are free downloads on the Play Store.

These programs will give you some control over which apps can access your device via the internet.

Now for ads.  If rooted use AdFree.  If not use Adblock Plus.  Google likes ads so you'll have to find these .apk files outside of the Play Store.

Finally download BlueBox Security Scanner from the play store.  It'll scan for known Android vulnerabilities.  If it finds any you will need to get an OEM software update from your device manufacturer.

Robert, I agree, people don't want to see what is happening under their nose every day.  They are intoxicated with their own arrogant s and they think it will just go away by it self. These companies have their hands on our Kun-u-juz and are waiting to start squeezing and I don't mean maybe.

Tip of the iceberg stuff and our generation is really just a guinea pig.  My grandkids don't give a 1st or 2nd thought to the tracking and control associated with, you name it. They can hear about it all day long but they don't care, and most of their friends don't either. So long as they are connected they are happy.

You can pick on Android, but you are missing most of it. Air bags going back to the 90's, all cell phones no matter how old, they all connect to a cell tower.

4 years ago I worked in the IT department of company whose bread and butter was in advertising revenue. We were considering an appliance that claimed that it collected so many data points for each page visit that it would be able to connect mobile and full site guest visitors with > 90% certainty.  It also used the aggregated info from all if it's customers to reasonably pinpoint  a visitors location.  With that we could do something as simple as local mobile advertising for the mom/pop pizzeria and isolate it to those that mattered, upping the conversion rate significantly.

The intrusion continues with the coming generation of smart appliances and cars. You'll be temped to buy into the intrusion because the appliance with adverts attached it will be subsidized by someone like Google, M$ or Samsung.

You can try to avoid it but I think it is mostly futile.  Facebook said years ago they could build a profile on a large majority of those who have never had an account based on what is posted by those that do.

Makes me cry.

I guess I will still live in the stone age like I will do the rest of my life.  I don't use google, chrome, or facebook/twitter or any other of those websites and never will.  Plus, NEVER will buy a smartphone.  The day I pay an extra 28 bucks per month to have internet I already have on my laptop at home will be NEVER.  I do not use any type of apps and don't see the need for it in my life.

I have seen first hand how facebook goes awry and ruins people's lives.  Don't want any part of it since none of anyone's business what I do or think.

Maybe instead of nit picking and trying to have a pissing contest, try and figure out an alternative.  Some of the best inventions in the world came out of someones garage.

Not trying to attack you personally, but actually stuff posted on this site would be even easier to harvest than something posted on say Facebook, depending on how you set your Facebook account up.

Yea but the problem is they have to read the posts its not just data that could drive someone crazy  uglystupid2 2funny 2funny 2funny

Face book and the rest harvest the information and note each person who goes to your post and then connects them with you. What you post what you like and don't like and then use that to target ads to you that makes it personal like they know you.  Its done on a forced basis not asked and revealed what they are doing. Plus you have no control of any information that is gathered.
