Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: December 21, 2014, 04:59:50 PM »

Hooked up with my ridin' bud Larry this morning with the temps in the 20's. We was the only one's that showed up at our breakfast meeting place. Larry suggested we should go skuff in our new tires before we roll out Friday for " The Gulf Coast Ride " . No better place on earth to do that than The Dragon. Picture below is from the overlook on US129 The Dragon you can see Calderwood Dam. Calderwood Dam is a hydroelectric dam located along the Little Tennessee River in Blount and Monroe counties, in the U. S. state of Tennessee. Completed in 1930, the dam is owned and maintained by Tapoco, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), although the Tennessee Valley Authority controls the dam's reservoir levels from Fontana Dam further upstream. Calderwood Dam is named for Alcoa engineer Isaac Glidden Calderwood (1871–1941), who supervised much of the company's early Little Tennessee River operations.

Calderwood Dam was one of four dams— along with Cheoah, Santeetlah, and Chilhowee— built in the Little Tennessee Valley by Alcoa in the 20th century to provide electricity to its aluminum smelting operations in Blount County. The dam was one of the last to be completed in the Tennessee River watershed before TVA took control of the watershed in 1933. Alcoa developed the community of Calderwood, Tennessee, just downstream from the dam to house construction and maintenance crews for its Little Tennessee Valley operations. In 1989, Calderwood Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Larry and I was hangin' out at the overlook ( you can still see Paul ( Thumper's )  ashes from the wall ) when Paul ( Wimp ) came pulling in . Check out his new ride  coolsmiley

The weatherman claimed " abundant sunshine " for today with temps climbing into the low 50's I'm here to tell you the dude is full of sh!t it was dreary all day and cold as well . I love my Gerbing Heated Gear stayed comfortable all day some of the best money my wife ever spent.

" The Money Shot " taken at Stecoah Gap about seven miles to the northeast of Robbinsville, NC, along Highway 143, which is known locally as Sweetwater Road.

This picturesque spot serves many purposes.  There are two sturdy picnic tables a few steps away from the small parking lot.

The view northward is spectacular.  At times you can see Fontana Lake (named from the Italian word for “fountain”.

There are few bikes that make my pulse quicken.

The Diavel is one of them.

Wimp gets several magazine subscripitions every month and was telling me in one of them they did a side by side comparison with this bike and the new 1800 Goldwing Valkyrie. He said in every category the Ducati spanked the Goldwing Valkyrie's ass.

Foo. It has 160 horsepower and weighs 450lbs... why were they comparing them? Any one of us
think they'd rather ride that thing to Wisconsin than a Valkyrie?

I wouldn't be hiding my face on the Diavel.  Evil

Getting close to flogging the dead horse again  Shocked

The Diavel cat catchers seem to blend in to the bike.

Better ship it well ahead of time, you're liable to beat it there.

Could be they are smaller and follow the lines of the bike tighter.

Great pics and ride report. I really enjoy hearing about the history of the places in the pics.

And, that is one "bad ass", "pin your ears back and ride", "Hunter Thompson would have loved it" motorcycle. If all V twins had power like that one does we'd be living in a different world. I wouldn't want to buy one but I'd sure like to ride one for a week.  cooldude

Wasn't too many years ago my son Andy rode his Monster to the Johnson City, Dragons over the Smokies? meet. One day there, one day back and he said it was a comfortable ride. We did have to adjust the chain once though. Embarrassed
