Planning to attend our first Gathering Of The Fools in April, and we then want to spend maybe three nights afterward in New Orleans while heading home.  Used to visit regularly but have not been back since Katrina.

Would like to park the bikes and basically walk/use the street cars once we arrive.  While I'm sure we could stay at a B&B in the Garden District we'd prefer finding a hotel offering secure bike parking somewhere in the French Quarter.  Just puts us closer to all the "goings-on". Evil

Anyone have any experiences with biker friendly hotels in the French Quarter, New Orleans?

The wife and I stayed at hotel dauphine on our way into INZANE in Arkansas. They were very accommodating since we had two bikes and a trailer behind my bike. We were able to park in the employee section and they blocked them in and watched them. The hotel was very nice and reasonably priced. The hotel sits a block from bourbon street. Good luck and hope you enjoy.

...were from Northern Michigan and we did the same thing a couple of years ago. Hit Memphis Tennessee
for some BBQ Ribs on the way to GOTF and hits New Orleans on the way home. We lucked out, as we got near NO and were looking for down town so we hit a welcome center. This little ol lady there tells us to sit infront of this computer and peruse all these different hotels. They all looked great but we finally chose one and because we made reservations from the welcome center they knocked 30 dollars a night off the hotel and gave us free parking ! There is no where to park in NO and the hotels charge you 25 -30 dollars a day to park !....but we got it free. Plus the hotel was right down town (which we wanted)...it wasnt far to walk to where everything was happening. We had such a blast we decided to stay two nights instead of one. The hotel said no problem, but we had to change rooms, we still had an incredible time. Stay as long as you can, because there is no way you can explore everything in a day or two. And be sure to have a biegnet at Du Mondes !

this was our room...it was around 120 a night and we got it for 90 after the discount with a balcony !

...I,ll ask my wife the name of the Hotel shen she gets home from work tonight..

Most of the hotels are very biker friendly.  Not necessarily true of the public parking lots though.
We have a fellow Valk rider in the New Orleans French Quarter mounted police, Major Wallace Leban.  Very fine man.

..Here ya go....The Hotel Provencial....a VERY nice place. A family bought 4 or 5
buildings there many years ago and put up a wall between them all and made a
secure court yard, so you dont have to worry about the bike being safe, then they converted the place into a hotel. We rode ours and we were towing a trailer. One of the old buildings that they
converted to rooms used to be a hospital used in the Civil War. There is
a lot of history through out the place, and I highly recommend it.

...a fountain in the court yard.....oh yeah...they have free coffee and these giant
blueberry muffins in the morning....no charge.

....we ate at some place called Forrest Gumps one night...great view from our table out
on the veranda, but we werent that impressed with the food.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions!  Will contact the two hotels and ask specific questions about parking the bikes securely.

Additional comments/suggestions from the group are welcome. Smiley

CafĂ© du Monde is always a favorite.  As is the nearby Central Grocery for the great muffalettas.

Pat's would be a new stop - I can't identify the area from that photo, but I'll look it up...  cooldude

Woton, as you will be accompanied by your very lovely wife, this advice is probably unnecessary.

But when I was a young (single) lieutenant in New Orleans for a short visit many years ago, after visiting and drinking at many happy establishments, a very attractive local young lady invited me to her residence (and this seemed like a wonderful idea).  As we got out of the light of the French Quarter into the dark and seedy parts, a huge man that appeared to be her partner in crime attempted to mug me.  I made it out with no damage (other than my pride)....... but leaving the well lighted and populated areas of the French Quarter at night is very bad judgment indeed.

My judgment was impaired by both alcohol and beauty.  I hate when that happens.

I ate a plate of fried oysters and shrimps at Felix's (an old place) right in The Quarter last time I was there.
You wait out in the street until there's room for you to get in. I ate right at the bar and
didn't get a table just for me...

Sage advice...and we appreciate it, Jess.

In all our visits we've never had a safety issue in NO.  However, a church friend lost his life there some years ago apparently trying to stand up to a mugger.  Never caught the guy to my knowledge.

There's safety in numbers, as they say.  We definitely try to not be caught walking alone on a side street anytime of the day in NO.

Lots of great oyster places in NO - we've been to Casamentos and Acme.

Now, here's another one to try.  Have to do them on the half shell, though.  cooldude

After GOTF and a few nights in New Orleans we'll definitely be checking tire pressures before heading home!

Woton heres another option. Chateau hotel 1001 chartres 504 524 9636. Southeast corner of the French quarter they have free parking with a AAA card. In kind of an alley across the street parking and its locked up at night. stayed many times no problems ever with my vehicle being messed with. www.chateauhotel.com

Hey, Scott

We stayed at this hotel at our last visit to NO some years ago.  Good location, reasonably priced, and I'm sure the free parking attracted us back then - as it would now!  Had one of those second floor rooms with a balcony that made for great people watching.  Grin

Did not recall the parking lot is locked at night until you mentioned it.  Will check back with them about the bikes for this trip.  See you've signed up for IZXV and maybe we'll see you at GOTF also.
