This guy is so lucky. He was not riding defensively, IMO.

Red lights around here just seem to mean slow down for some folks.

I think we all have seen in our lives a cager run a red light.  Most recently for me was last year on my cycle a semi who was just ahead of me going same direction (side by side almost)  kept going faster while I was slowing down for the 4-way intersection with stop lights ahead when it turned red.  I slowed down, the semi went right on thru going about 45 mph when in fact the cross traffic had the right of way yet luckily they stopped knowing full well the semi was not going to stop.  I just shook my head since that could have ended in death very easily for anyone not looking both ways even if they had a green light.

Heck,  I'll admit it,  I've even ran a red light a few times as well not paying attention.  Luckily,  no one around in the intersection coming on thru.     uglystupid2

I'll give his attention span a 3... his landing a 10...

Small mistake, big problem.  Glad he made it out without major injuries.

Hell of a landing!

SEEMED to be scanning the intersection fairly well-UNTIL the light changed. Then it SEEMED like he went bore sight. I've been in front at a lighted intersection and people have honked as soon as light went green. I take an extra second or two to continue my scan BEFORE proceeding. Even after that extra second or two I have REALLY needed acceleration or brakes. My office used to be the highways and byways of the good ole U S of A.  cooldude All of the lessons I learned in the high seat of an 18 wheeler apply to my everyday life-LIFE being the key word here. The scenario I play out in my head is-WHAT is the stupidest dumb assed idiotic move the fools around me can/will/could make??  uglystupid2 TRUTH be told-I'm rarely-too rarely-disappointed-they do make the stupid move!  Roll Eyes S A-situational awareness=life!  cooldude Be prepared and most importantly-EXPECT the Unexpected.  coolsmiley When on a M/C play more defense and less offense-finding THAT balance is up to YOU. RIDE SAFE.

I have to agree w/ old2soon, the rider was scanning the intersection the entire time, but as soon as the light changed for him, away he went. All that effort to see what was happening while stopped ruined by not taking an extra 3 seconds to wait for his own safety...lesson learned the hard way.

How lucky for him to not only walk away, but to have a nurse walk up too.

There is a driving safety saying. "Don't be the first one to enter an intersection " as is sead " the early bird catchs the worm" or fender.

I always tried not to run reds in a semi, however they need alot of real estate to stop.

It is my observation that the longer the light, the more impatient I am to go when it finally changes.

I work very hard to temper this impatience and use my eyes and brain before banging the throttle.

Seriously though, in busy, multi-lane traffic intersections with big trucks or other things blocking your views to cross traffic, a wise man proceeds slowly using the cars and trucks next to him as blockers.... all the way thru the intersection.  Then bang the throttle.

There are a lot of driving skills that aren't seemed to be taught any more.  There are very few courteous drivers.  It seems that if there isint a law against it, then well, HEY lets just do it and if someone gets upset just ridicule them for not knowing the law.  I was taught way before riding motorcycles to pause after a light turns green and look both ways twice AFTER it turned.  I certainly would not fail to do that on a bike.  That rider wouldn't have had to wait three seconds, maybe 1 and just an extra look after the green would have spotted the intruder

Other things people just don't seem to care about:

Stopping in heavy traffic in an intersection.  That one burns me up

Not utilizing turning lanes when available, thereby holding up traffic because they want to slow to 1 mph before accessing small driveway instead

Unwillingness to allow merging or to merge

Tailgating

No blinkers...even our cops are bad at this one

Tailgating

When the slow driver speeds up when you try to pass them so its hard or impossible to pass them safely

Tailgating

I wish people would realize that a little courtesy (like letting that guy/gal merge in when he/she needs it) actually INCREASES the flow of traffic.  Letting them in nicely keeps them from getting desperate and cutting someone off, then brakes get jammed on and the entire flow of traffic slows.

The term "Smooth is Fast" doesn't only apply to racing... it applies to traffic also.
