I'm in the middle of a visual make over for the Fat lady.  While doing so I'm planning on leaving her just metal finished with clear coat over it.  If you were to stop someone this way and the registration said "red" (which mine does) and the person explained what's going on how do you think it would be handled.  I really don't want to try to have to re title it for the bare metal then again when I decide what/if I'm going to paint it... Did already try to re register it as bare steel. BMV said I couldn't do that, that it has to be a color....

I was told by a State Trooper that I do mechanic work for, that if the make, model and ser# match the registration that is all that is required. I imagine though, it would be open for interpretation by the individual LEO like many other laws. Undecided

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I think I just told the bmv mine was red at renewual time. OEM was maroon and cream. Never had a issue when stopped as they can always match the VIN.

If it ever becomes an issue, just tell them it's a work in progress.

If you tell them you intend to leave it this way and DMV would not recolor the registration the way it is, you have created your own problem.

Or like Serk said, if it's closer to grey or silver, pick one (those are on the list of colors, bare metal is not on the list.)

Knew a guy in HS had primer on one side and color on the other.  He left it that way so there would be conflicting witness reports in case of an accident.  He didn't tell the DMV or LEOs that, for them it was a work in progress.

Now if you live in a one-horse town with Barney and Fred Fife, that could be a problem. (but I doubt it)

Color has  nothing to do with it as long as the vin # matches the registration. Thing can be rooster dink pink and it doesn't matter at all as long as the numbers are matching.

I agree with the others, the color on the title just helps LE out. If the color does not match, it gives them a reason to look a closer at the vin #. I am sure that there was no one on my old department that would have done anything about it other than a little closer look.

A couple months ago I was talking with a lady and she said she got pulled over in her dads truck for having a tailgate a different color than the truck. Was a brand new tailgate because he somehow backed into a telephone post with it down. They told her it was illegal to have any body part a different color than what was on the title. Got a ticket and she went to court. Judge looked at the officer and laughed and told him if he wanted to show his ass he would recommend immediate termination to his chief. There is all kinds of this crap going on here. Another guy I know that drives one of those platinum edition f150's, the ones with the chrome tailgate, got stopped for the same thing. He laughed in the officers face and read him the right act. After the stop he went straight to the police station and made a formal complaint then went to the mayors office. It wont change anything but at least the complaint has been made.

I'm retired law enforcement and worked traffic most of my career.
In SC there's no color listed on registration cards and has nothing to do with anything. I would never have questioned the color of a vehicle even if it looked like a rainbow with polka dots.

I believe that was classed as a snowmobile (or was it the blow-mobile?).
