Me and my Valk at Freedom Rock

« on: February 04, 2015, 07:06:03 PM »

My daughter get her tail light knocked out by a hit and run driver a month or so ago. I went to order one on line and it gets shipped via FedEx.

I live in NW Iowa. My daughter not far away in Sioux City.

Anyway I look up the tracking number and this is the travel history of the Malibu tail light

Originates in Berlin, Wisconsin

Then it goes to Maple Grove, Minn.
from there it goes to St. Paul Minn.
then back to Maple Grove, Minn, and then
BACK to St. Paul, Minn. then to Lenexa, Kansas.
I'm pretty certain they had to pass pretty close to NW Iowa to get from St. Paul to Lenexa. (Departed at 5:30 am and arrived 8 pm so it was by truck.

Can't wait to see where it goes tomorrow!

In the military, when you PCS (permanent change of station) you carry a couple of suitcases on the plane, but you also get something called Hold Baggage which is 600lbs, in which you put everything you will really need right away, that comes very fast to your new duty location.  Like all your extra uniforms, boots, shoes, raingear, coats, camp-out-in-your-new-empty-house/apartment gear, etc.  And then your household goods which are shipped in a big wooden crate which takes a month or two to arrive, depending on just how bumfok-remote the funny guys in military assignments have decided to send you. And you may or may not get to ship a car as well.

So I get assigned (volunteer, uh oh) to go from Maxwell AFB AL to Ankara AS, Turkey (a 'fer piece). So I take a lot of time to put everything I will really need in my hold baggage, and ship it before I spend about 24 continuous hours in various airplanes to arrive in Ankara Turkey.  They put me in temporary housing until I can find a local apartment on the economy because there is no base housing (except for E3 and below, and guys who have gotten in so much trouble downtown (like drunk driving, fighting or deflowering the local maidens), they are ordered into base housing).

And my Hold Baggage with everything I will need right away, never arrives and cannot be located. When it does finally arrive, the cardboard boxes look like they have traveled to Mars or maybe been stored under the Great Pyramids.  The mystery is solved when I find rubber stamps on the cartons indicating they were sent to Kunsan AB Korea (and just stuck somewhere for a long time).  Now Ankara Turkey and Kunsan Korea are both petty bumfok, but you'll notice how one could not reasonably be mistaken for the other.  In the meantime I camped out in an empty apartment with no pots and pans or bedding and two uniforms and pairs of sox and underwear (until I had to buy more) for a long time.

I always figured I had pissed someone off pretty bad, but who, I never knew.  My big wooden crate of household goods and car went in the bottom of an ocean going freighter out of New Orleans LA and arrived before my Hold Baggage.   tickedoff 2funny

I know what you mean, Moonshot...but today's shipping world is all about hubs and distribution centers. Sometimes it seems messed up in the way things go in a round about way in the name of efficiency----according to UPS, FEDEX, DHL, and the USPS.

My reply while somewhat similar focuses on U S P S-A K A-snail mail. Wink I live in Willow Springs Mo. IF I elect to mail something to a friend across town it first goes to my local post office where it is loaded on a truck and sent to Springfield Mo. 85ish miles West where it is sorted the stamp is cancelled put on probably the same truck the next day and sent back to the local post office here and gets put on the truck for local delivery.  Roll Eyes While driving over the road I hauled FedEx and U S P S. A lot of FedEx "Air Freight" goes over night on an 18 wheeler.  Lips Sealed If memory- 2funny-serves it was like 500-600 miles to the hub it went ground for FedEx. Logistics IS a money maker. RIDE SAFE.

USPO did away with mail sorting here, at town of over 20K folks (maybe another 15k in 20 mile of town).  Now our in town mail goes over the hill, some 80 miles to be sorted and returned.  The "over hill" during normal winters can get kind of bad and sometimes gets closed.   Just one of the wonders of the US Post Office.

I hope everyone that is complaining about the USPS and the circuitous route your mail sometimes takes, realizes WHY some distribution centers are closed and consolidated.

Back in 2006, Congress passed the The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA). Essentially this forces the USPS to pre-fund their pension obligations over the span of 10 years. This means they're funding the pensions of people that haven't even started working there, or even born for that matter. No other corporation in the country has to meet this burden.

Please don't fall into the trap of blaming the USPS for everything bad that you see. This is all a scheme by those members of Congress that want to privatize the USPS..  I don't think the founding fathers envisioned the Post Office with a CEO.....

You tell 'em, baldo. As a 27+ year postal employee I am disgusted by how the USPS has been run into the ground by the powers that be. Don't get me started... tickedoff
