Send her to WalMart.  They are paying $9/hr starting in April, $10 next April.

As much as some people badmouth Walmart, it does pay somewhat well in most areas and I know a guy at the distribution center nearby as a forklift operator pays over 20 bucks per hour, not too shabby, and with modern eqmt.

Congrats!  Sure beats the 25 cent raise we all get where I work whether horrible employee or great, we all get the same 25 cents per year.  I guess better than my first full time job after college having over a 2 year pay freeze for all working there.?

Pay is provided by an employer in relation to what the employer believes is the value of what the employee provides.  If an employee believes what he or she provides is worth much more than what the employer is paying then it is time for the relationship to be severed.   If the employer can then find another to be hired to do what the employee was doing for the employer's selected compensation then I guess the employer will win that argument.

If someone's supervisor doesn't do the agreed upon service of reviewing the worker's contribution there is something wrong with the relationship that likely should result in termination.

People are not entitled to nearly as much as many believe they are.  People are capable of earning a negotiating a lot more than they sometimes think they can.  Workers at any organization are in constant competition with whomever else is available to do what an employer may believe is the same service.

If I as a customer don't like to be badgered by sales persons I simply choose not to frequent stores that follow that practice.  If I am a sales employee and my employer has found or believes that the badgering results in more revenue (and in cases it does) and has therefore instructed me to do so either I do so, negotiate with the employer to be relieved of that responsibility, or I simply move on.

A sense of entitlement certainly does skew reality, doesn't it?

I think Gryphon rider and Meathead covered it pretty well.
Let her live her life and learn from it. Without your negativism, she will do just fine and develop her own opinions and work ethic..
She gets there on time and works hard-something too many never learn to do.
Don't let your sour grapes and complaining get in her way of learning a little bit about life. Let her smile-no need for you to rub it off her face.

Keep them there for 24 hours IF YOU CAN.

No I don't know you and most of the time I'm f'ing pleased I don't.

What a sad, miserable, grumpy, whining persona you portray.

I find irony in a bunch of conservatives complaining about minimum wage not being enough/not worth it to spend the gas and time at a job.  2funny

So your daughter got hired as a salesperson, and did her job except for the sales part, and you have determined she deserves a raise.  I have a news flash for you.  The less your daughter gets paid, the more profit the company makes.  They don't give raises out of the goodness of their heart, they only give raises if it is an investment that makes them more money.  A part-time sales girl with an aversion to selling is not a money-maker for them.

In my opinion, your daughter should make at least 10 dollars an hour, and probably closer to 15 an hour.  I guess that makes me some kind of commie socialist pinko right?  I'm sure the business will do the right thing though right?  Let the "free market" take care of it, because we all know the corporations are only looking to reward dedicated hard workers.   uglystupid2

It is easier to go from a job to a job , than unemployment to a job.
Find another job , tell them you wish to give notice , but if they fire you , can I start right away.

                                      da prez

+1 On this.

If she isn't happy with her job she should find another one to replace it with before she quits.

I know that she is only 16, but you don't want her to develop a reputation as a job jumper later in life.

cookiedoe ;;;   your a great dad   to take time with your kid.
Only advice I ever got from my dad and older brother was   ' whats the matter with you ' .  They were weak people that ran every one down  to make themselves justified and I wouldn't do it, so the MFers blackballed me. They are pussys .

F Them to.

If Your daughter took another job comparable to the one you offered at the same  pay rate  then that's allright?  right?

Man,  I tell you the best thing is for a kid to learn to be independent and responsible for there future.

Cookie, I don't know you well or your daughter but honestly, you need to take a breath and step back from this situation. I appreciate that you're trying to protect your daughter but it's simply not the last time that she will be abused and lied to in a retail environment; welcome to p/t high school employment.

1/ The 15 drive and gas was your/her choice. Many people who live in rural areas around here do the same. Similarly, the choice to live in a small town with few opportunities locally.

2/ She should be glad she's not flipping burgers or dropping fries for minimum wage; oil burns are a b*tch. Standing at at McD's counter for minimum wage might be the worst job ever, no standing around just chatting with your co-workers while you fold clothes....but you deal with people all day long in a high stress and fast paced environment and that has its own merit. Kids b*tch and complain about those jobs constantly but they're learning.

3/ She was promised a review, she should have had a review....but she DESERVED nothing. Harsh but true.

4/ Getting cut on the job I totally agree with you.

5/ It really sounds like you're projecting a lot of your own frustrations onto her situation, for instance how much you make yourself but the "no raises except Oct" is a bull line and they know it.

6/ However a retail store might decide not to open due to the weather the night before, an hour before or a half after after they open. It's not like they TRIED to wait until you arrived.

7/ You don't really KNOW if she's been given positive comments or constructive criticism over the months, just what you've been told. You're looking at everything in the most negative light possible imo.

8/ You're just going down all the dark alleys ie "all the other kids just got jobs because their parents knew someone". WHO CARES, life isn't fair or maybe that is? Again, you're projecting like somehow that's YOUR failure.

9/ Your rant was so long I can't remember the other points I thought as I was reading. Like I said, you're going to blow a gasket and not sending the right messages to your daughter who has a whole lifetime to become bitter on her own....

10/ I bet you're a great Dad. Misguided but great.....

PS
I've worked retail, I've owned retail (sold the company) and I've been self employed for 30 years (out of retail). It's a crap business where only a few really profit.

I have 3 kids in various stages of p/t jobs. 1 in a co-op university position in an office where he's on a train to work for an hour and 15 minutes in (at 7am) and and hour and 15 minutes home (at 7pm). No one pays him for that 2 and a half hours DAILY travel time. He;s doing it for the experience and they pay's not bad. 2 other kids (1 girl 16 same as yours) working p/t in high end restaurants, started by cleaning tables, moved up to waitress and hostess respectively. Minimum wage is $11 up here but basic costs are insane.

So I feel your pain. You need to step back...for yourself and her.

Look dude.  It's a cold world out there.

You obviously hate your job....you've told us over and over and over and over again just how much you hate your job.

I'm afraid that you're gonna project that onto your kid.

What YOU and your kid need to understand right here and now is that unless you work under a contract (stating rights, benefits, etc)...whether collectively bargained (unions) or individually bargained (such as a consultant, sub contractor, etc), you are an "at will" employee.

Look up what an at will employee is.

If you don't know, that means that you work for a company at will, were as you can be terminated at will at any time for any reason whatsoever.  Read your employee handbook...it's probably in there.  It may not be as direct as that, but I promise you, it's worded in there somewhere.

Bottom line is you and your daughter don't have any employee rights except those granted to you by the employer.  It's cold, but it's the truth.

Life sucks.  Works sucks.  It's life....get over it, accepted it, work with it to your best interests and move on.

It's just an after school job....she's a kid and she can get another one.  It's not a career for her.  She doesn't really need a job review....she just needs a paycheck.

The employer, any employer owes you and your daughter absolutely nothing except payment for all hours worked.

Well,  my daughter finally called up her boss tonight and decided enough was enough.  She quit tonight on the phone, no other job lined up for the summer.  Won't go into details, but even the wife agrees the lies and unjust treatment was enough,  so not just me.

Like what was said, it is not a career job, she will find another am sure.  She is actually happy she quit and been wanting to do it for months now.
