Have been looking for a new rifle in 308 and came across these. Anyone have any hands on experience with either of these? The reviews seem to be good and I like the fact they will accept a standard AR-10 mag.

no experience, but am sure they are good guns overall.  I have had for 25+ years a mossberg 500 pump shotgun and although not the flashiest,  only thing ever broke on it firing 1,000 of rounds thru it over the years is the safety switch broke was plastic, replaced with metal so will not break.  Never failed and killed plenty of deer with it and one of the cheapest to buy but decent quality for the price paid, hard to beat that.

Gavin, I have been looking very closely at this MVP family of rifles for awhile.  When you get into the details, they are very well thought out and have many nice attributes besides just taking AR (5.56 & 7.62) mags (though doing that reliably is a very good attribute).  The adjustable triggers are supposed to be very nice.

Since I will always have more 5.56 (and mags) on hand than anything else, I want a 5.56 rifle.  And I like the laminate stock Predator much more than the polymer stock Flex or the Patrol. But it is not just the stock material.

I like the idea of a collapsible/adjustable stock on the Flex, but I do not think that a pistol grip is very compatible with a bolt action rifle.  Since they will take a larger capacity mags (30 or 20s on the 5.56), I view this a combat rifle, and to keep it on your shoulder while working the bolt rapidly, I think having to bring your hand all the way down to wrap around a pistol grip, then all the way off to work the bolt, back and forth between shots, will be more time consuming (and not so very ergonomic) than using a conventional stock.  Now if you are looking at it as a hunting rifle with only the occasional shot, then the pistol grip would be fine.  I otherwise really like pistol grip rifles and riot shotguns, and to the extent a pistol grip could interfere in a prone shooting position, so will a big magazine. And of course, a bi-pod on the front sling swivel can fix that nicely.

I also want an 18-20" bbl, not a 16", so the Patrol is out.  Not that a 16" bbl loses all that much push or accuracy in either 5.56 or 7.62. (and I already have a 16" M4-type AR)

Now the Predator comes in a Varmint long bbl, heavy stock model too, but that is too heavy, and I like this one best with the 18.5" bull bbl. Many laminates are too brightly colored for me, but I think this is beautiful, and the roughed-up rather than traditionally etched grab parts are good too (but this is what I like for my purpose, not necessarily best for yours)

Thanks Jess,  this willbe primarily a hunting rifle. That is if they pass high powered rifles for deer season this year. I really like the pistol grip  collapsible stock ones. But will probably go with the scout and then buy a new chassis from a company that will turn the action barrel and trigger into more ofan AR.

Another thing to consider is used.  A good number of people who know what they are doing buy a good bolt rifle and then mod it up with better triggers, stocks, optics, bipod, glass bedding, yada, then later sell with very low round counts, for a much better price than you could put one together from all new.  (Of course the real hot rods are never cheap, even used)

And it's fun shopping the gun boards anyway to see what's out there and what others have done to their rifles (the adds are often very detailed). And on Armslist, you can narrow searches to Rifles, bolt, .308, or even Mfgr.

And since it is a long bolt gun, you are not really limited to Indiana, and it's face to face cash and carry anyway.

Can't speak for the new ones, but I had an older Mossberg 7mm magnum that was a really great gun.

You can build a fine AR10 from kits online.  Even buy 80% lowers and finish them yourself, for avoiding the official lists and BATFE's harvesting the 4473's making defacto illegal gun registrations.  Make it as cheap or refined as you please.  Buy 10rnd mags and a 5rnd plug from Magpro so it's legal for hunting.  Here's an LR10 I assembled for a less-tooled/skilled friend from the parts he provided - as an ex-AF weapons mechanic (armorer) I enjoy tinkering with such machinery - but don't do it for hire, not a licensed FFL (don't ask, can't do it for you).  Yeah I directed his milling the receiver (illegal to do it for him).  This rifle was built to deliver up to 1/4 M.O.A. - actual performance varies with many factors.  Yeah it's a bit heavy at 12lbs empty - not for stalking, but a great stand shooter.

DPMS .308 upper, 24" SS floated bull barrel, Harris 9-13 bipod, 80% lower.

JPE competition roller single stage adjustable trigger, 4.0# no creep.  The 4-16X40 Nikon scope is specifically designed for .308, has direct dope settings out to 800 yds; they make BDC turrets for a myriad of loads, as well as for your custom loads. Comes with a 20MOA down cant offset picatinny mount. .308Winchester is generally accepted as having a range of 1100 yds. Varies with loads of course.

I've got no experience with them and haven't laid hands on them yet so please keep us updated if you buy one. I've always liked their firearms and their company. Good well built firearms, with some real innovation but always priced for working people. Their tube feed through the butt stock .22's were a superb design as are the pump shotguns. I really wish they'd start making handguns. And of course, they were making bolt action shotguns long before they were cool.

Thanks for all your input Mark. I have considered building an AR-10 but really want a bolt action. I have a couple buddies that build AR's all the time and could easily go raid their parts stash and put together a fine rifle but it's still not bolt action. I think I might try to track one of these MVP rifles down this week and buy it. If I do get one I'll be sure to let everyone know how it shoots after a couple hundred rounds.
