I can't understand why so many pay for cable/satellite when a large percentage of programming is reality crap.

History
Discovery
National Geographic

To name but a few are loaded with reality crap and reality crap repeats

So the American public gets what it has shown it's willing to watch.

My family too got sick of the cable crap, and canceled it all.  Now I have a small WalMart antenna about the size of a pencil on my back porch.  I get 24 free TV channels, including Grit, which is old movies, Create which is cooking, Fox and news channels, a couple of sports channels, and no reality TV and it's free.  Also put one on my RV, and now have 24 free channels in it.  You just have to scan function and your TV will capture the analog channels and convert to digital and the picture is actually superior to cable.

I agree,  sex box is stupid and so are most of the TV shows with tons of ads and not much interesting to watch on my 250+ channels I get with dish network.  Most are junk.

I use to like watching duck dynasty the first season, but is getting old now and not as interesting/funny.

I do however like Axe Men, Alaska Frontier,  Buying Alaska, Swamp People, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and Moonshiners, which is most of the shows I watch from time to time.

I still don't see if moonshining is illegal,  how can they video them doing something illegal and not get put in jail?

With a few exceptions, we are not required to turn in our neighbors or strangers committing crime we observe (yet).  But if you assist or enable someone to commit a crime, then you can be charged as a principle, or aiding and abetting.  If one of these reality shows pays people to film them making moonshine (or other illegal activity) then they could be charged with aiding and abetting (ie funding crime).  However, you can bet the corporate film/TV shysters have suggested ways to skirt these things, like no REAL mooshine was used in any filming.  And making your own liquor is legal, so long as it under a certain amount, and not offered for sale.

If you stumble across a dead body, you are generally required to report it, everywhere.

There are Good Samaritan laws that require you to stop and assist with accidents and injuries (esp if you caused them, but even if you didn't) (and insulate you from liability, so long as you acted reasonably). And when the cops show up, they will want to know what you saw.

If it is known you are a witness to crime, and you refuse to make a statement, they can lean on you, lock you up as a material witness, provide you use or transactional immunity to require your testimony before a grand jury or at trial, and jail you until you do testify (civil contempt).

However, there is always the 5th Amend right to not incriminate yourself, thus one can always argue that if you commited a crime, or assisted in crime, or acted to cover up a crime, you cannot be charged with failure to report, because it would amount essentially to required self incrimination (without a grant of immunity).

And there is no constitutional right for talking heads to refuse to reveal their sources.

Moonshiners TV show is selling it on in plain sight on  TV and across counties and states where down south apparently it is still illegal.  It is taped on national TV, don't see how the cops cannot just go up and arrest them all that were doing this on TV?

Anyways, anyone in TN, etc. down south have had homemade moonshine and is it any good or does it taste like gas?  On one of the TV shows they put it in the vehicle since he ran out of gas and the moonshine ran the vehicle.  Somehow I don't think I want to drink 100 proof corn elixir that can run a vehicle, do you?  The price they sell it for on TV seems awfully high to me if not mistaken something like 100 bucks per gallon jug of moonshine.

You realize moonshiners is comlpetly fake and they really dont make shine? If they did, every cop would know who they are and would bust them. It's a good show but fake as all get out. Google it and read all about how fake it is. Just because they are doing a tv show doesn't make them exempt from the law.

are you sure about the Samaritan laws? I thought those laws were to protect you from liability if you voluntarily helped someone....I don't think they require you to help (many folks don't have a skill set that would be helpful in an emergency)  I understand that there may be a 'duty to rescue' if you are the one who created a hazardous event and that at minimum there is a duty to at least report the need for assistance to authorities

ok, I just found this:

##In the United States, as of 2009 ten states had laws on the books requiring that people at least notify law enforcement of and/or seek aid for strangers in peril under certain conditions: California,[11][12] Florida,[11][13][14] Hawaii,[11][15] Massachusetts,[11][16] Minnesota,[11][17] Ohio,[11][18] Rhode Island,[11][19] Vermont,[11][20] Washington,[11][21][22] and Wisconsin.[11][23] These laws are also referred to as Good Samaritan laws, despite their difference from laws of the same name that protect individuals that try to help another person.[1] These laws are rarely applied, and are generally ignored by citizens and lawmakers.[1]

I did not know the moonshiners show was totally fake,  thanks for straightening me out.  Now that I know no illegal moonshine was ever made,  upsets me I wasted hours and hours watching those episodes thinking it was real.   What a waste,  My bad!!  Cry

In the USA it is illegal to make distilled spirits in any amount, even if you do not intend to sell it.  You can make beer and wine for self consumption in limited amounts, but it is even illegal to own a still.....  unless you are bonded and have the BATF monitoring your operation so they can collect their taxes.

Yes Mark, beer and wine only (not liquor).  Sorry I misspoke.

When I try to make a general point with quick examples, I really need to do a little research instead of pulling stuff up from (fading) memory.

I guess I don't make cider then, it's apple wine. But, it seems to me that I read that the laws have been changed to allow 250 gallons to be made for home use.

But, regarding TV, I agree. We probably have over 200 channels and all but about 5 are pure crap.  I have to pay more for what I want just like everyone else, military, discovery, science, history, etc.
I stopped the movie channels and finally figured out how to get Netflix after months of trying. [ A smart TV works] We really really like Netflix, its friggin' great.

If not a sports fan I don't understand why anyone pays for cable/satellite.

My indoor antenna gets

ABC
NBC
Local Fox
GPB x 2
CBS
Movie
TUFF
France 24 - world news
Retro
ION Life
ION Home
Local and national weather channel
Bounce
Escape
Justice

Plus 4 or 5 others whose names escape me. Plus shopping and hispanic.

So that plus Netflix streaming, Netflix DVD and HULU free is plenty.

If you want to watch bootleg - plus run the risk of getting crap loaded onto your PC - then there's movietube.cc

Have to.  If I could get over air TV I'd drop cable in a heartbeat.  We're hidden behind a hill, blocks us from Tenderfoot Mountain where all the OTA TV and cellular antennas are for the valley.  It's third world.  Best internet I can get without paying out the nose is 1.5 Mbps DSL.  Have to have basic satellite for even local stations.  Can't get cell reception or data.  Too cheap for a land line so got a Magic Jack.  Have Netflix, but it suffers from the slooooooooow internet.

Well that sucks.

From your psot above I'm sure you've checked but for others who haven't.

Check to see which signals you might be able to receive.

Well, it wasn't that long ago we got cable. I stuck at the time one the those super doper antenna with a rotor and an enhancer gizmo on the roof. Still could count the channels on the fingers of one hand and had some left over. So when the new roof went on a couple years ago I threw the antenna as far as I could.
I hate TWC [ Time Warner Cable], but, they are a necessary evil as I refuse to hang a dish on the house and they are still needed for internet. So, I couldn't hang around here without them.
But since I dropped a lot of their channels and got Netflix, its OK even though its $170/mo.
