How many others let the dog ride with them.

Right now we are dogless. The dogs always rode in the vehicle and it was hard to figure out how to get the big ones in/on a bike. The 'little crap Su' rode in the saddle bag. With the top removed and she had a harness that was tied to a mount bolt.
When I was a kid the dog would sit in my lap while on the mini-bike and we would ride all over the county.

They ride in their sidecar, bought just for them (they let me use it sometimes without them, it's great for picking up groceries, furniture, etc.  Only one dog at a time, just to be safe.

I have a carrier that I can wear on my chest that the LITTLE dogs can ride in.   My old Miniature Schnauzer (miss that little guy still) loved it.  He'd settle in for the ride, fuss at traffic lights until we got moving again, then settle back down to enjoy the ride.  Haven't used it in a long tiime, tend to forget about it.  Guess now I'll have to dig it out and dust it off!

Back in the 70s I used to let my Sheltie ride on a rubber mat on the gas tank.   Just around town, small town.  Now I realize how lucky I was that he never fell off or caused me to wreck the bike and kill both of us.

An ex-BF used to put his Boston Terrier on the rear seat of his Gold Wing, it scared the heck out of me.

Which is why I bought the dogs a sidecar (and a Valkyrie to mount it on, of course).

I understand, but, I like to use them to my advantage sometimes. During the winter when I walk around the neighborhood all the girls ignore me if I'm dogless. When I had a dog with me they all would come over to pet the dog and chat. The dogs liked that and so did I.

Well ... not recently, but soon.  When my frenchie was smaller she rode with me on the Vmax in a chest carrier.  Well the chest carrier max'd out at 20 lb and she outgrew that a couple months back, so no riding.

This pup loves the motorcycle.  When I walk her in heavy storms she tries to hide under the bikes in the carport.  The bikes are right next to the car, but she chooses the bikes for comfort.

Anyway - to the point - I just purchased an inexpensive top box/trunk for my just purchased interstate.  It is basically a iberglass molded copy of the factory top box minus lights and speakers.  I got the lights and speakers problem covered.  My plan is to mount a couple eyelets in the bottom so that I can secure her harness to the box.  Then by cutting a relief in the lid for her head ... she will have a secure carrier from which she can enjoy the road again.  I figure on freezing water in tuperware so she'll have something to hydrate from and keep the box cooler in the Texas "not winter" season.

I carry mine as a spare ride in case the bike breaks down.

In the 70's i rode a 550 Four and i would look out the window and my pit bull would be sitting on the tank waiting to go for a ride. In the late 80's early 90's my doby would sit up on the tank and ride all day......his favorite thing was to give bicycle riders crap Grin

He knows when its Saturday and most of the time the minute he hears the keys he's camped out waiting at the door.

I love dogs ...... but for the life of me I can't understand folks who have to take their dogs everywhere with them. Home Depot, hardware stores, restaurants, antique shops, parts stores.
In baby strollers, back packs, front packs, and some just hanging off their owners arm.
It's a real shame there are so many quadriplegic dogs out there. Roll Eyes

My wife wanted a dog stroller to take him to the mall, I put my foot down on that one. I had never owned a small dog before but he was my daughters and when she had the baby he scratched the babies face by accident. Suddenly he became public enemy #1 and she was going to get rid of him. Hes a really good dog and I said I will take him. I do bring him to Home Depot its really funny, on the pallet carts he rides in the very front like a figure head on a boat. Doesn't jump down knows to stay where hes put. I had about 10 bags of rocks on one and he got right on top of them as I would put each one on and rode them up to the cash register and out the door to the truck.  In the regular cart he loves to look around and smell things and people just love to speak to him. I do it because he enjoys the travels, the wind, the people and all who talk to him. It seems the smaller dogs are very social and I never knew really how social till I got him. So now I do take him to quite a few places. I take him to work with me most everyday so hes never truly alone for long. While taking care of his needs can be a pain sometimes I do enjoy the peoples reaction to him and his enjoyment of the places he goes. I like when I sit him in a seat at a table he waits patiently just like anyone else. I am like you, I never understood people taking their dogs with them, but now I do. I don't think you can explain it, I think its one of those things you have to experience.

To see him enjoy the wind as much as me gives us common ground. It makes me appreciate riding all the more because of how much he enjoys it and he looks like how I feel. Ive learned we do share and understand one another, that owner and dog can have a mutual understanding and that is why I take him. Because we both love the wind, the smells, open space and the adventure of the day.

Patrick: I do take the lid off on long rides but local will leave it on. He can lay down in the bag if the ride gets to long or windy and has fallen asleep in the bag.

Our girl goes on every road trip we take.  At least one 5000 mile or so, and a couple shorter each summer.  She would rather ride than eat.
The only time she whined is when we were getting hailed on with golfball sized hail outside Cheyenne a couple years ago; with nowhere to hide.  Raced to a freeway overpass, and it was filled with f'ing cagers who would not move a f'ing inch. We were really getting beat up.  Wifey and I ended up hiding under the bike and sidecar for about 5 minutes...Hell, we were trying to crawl in the sidecar with the dog. Grin
She would ride like that, bolt upright, looking at the world going by.
The world would be a harder place without dogs.  She brings smiles to our faces daily.
