I just called Doc - he says his email was spoofed - so never mind on this. I'll leave it up since I can't delete it now - also as a warning, watch for email spoofers.

I just got this email a half hour ago from what appears to be Doc Riley.  I don't know why he's asking me for help, if this is legit.  Not like we are pals, and I'm certainly not a well-heeled businessman who has lots of liquid assets I can tap.  If I'm his only resource, I have to think doesn't he have actual friends, or family or something?  Maybe he sent this to everyone he can think of.  I note he didn't address the opening to me.  Don't know.  So I thought I'd put this here, as he's in the club.  Maybe someone knows more, or is close to him, or can otherwise help.  Not wanting to be cold, but don't have the resources to do much for him, if this is legit.

He's listed in the members as doc7402 and his current email has that as user@domain - the supposed source of his email (if it isn't spoofed) that agrees with my records.
He bought pipes in 2008 and that's our only contact.   Here's a pic of his bike from 2008:

Hello,

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I had a trip to Istanbul (Turkey)  for a short vacation unfortunately i got mugged at the park of the hotel where i stayed, all cash, credit card and Cell were all stolen from me but luckily for me i still have my passports with me.

i've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and my flight leaves in less than Few hours from now but i am having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until i settle the bills the amount needed now is just ($2,750) .I am so confused right now and thank God i wasn't  injured because I complied immediately.

Waiting to read from you so i can let you know how to get the money wired to me.

Regards,

David

On a related topic, I have a new customer who says he bought Doc's pipes and is having me replace the stacks.  I seem to recall, Doc was selling Valkyrie parts a few years back. His profile says he was active yesterday.  He has two posts recently on the classifieds page, one from Mar 10 about selling his 3-piece seat that he "just found" and "make an offer to his phone #", and another from Feb 13 about parting out his bike.  Doesn't sound appropriate for someone on an Intl trip.

That story has been around for 20 years that I know. Recieved it one time and the guy that sent it (supposedly) had coffee with us that morning.  My wife got one from a client that had just left the office.  If I respond , I tell them the check is in the mail , I love you , and you know number three.

This is the first time I've received one of these where I knew the guy.  Name & email both correct.  But why he would call on me - suspicious.  Also haven't seen this particular scam before.  Shoulda just entered a few key words in snopes and seen the exact script.  Honestly, never been successfully scammed, though I have seen a couple pretty well done scams.  Just checked the mirror, nobody wrote on my forehead while sleeping "sucker".

Speaking of that, reported in the book "The Seedy Side of Denver", some fantastic scams from the 19th century.  Cowboys coming in on the train from the high plains, used to go to the barbershops which were right close to Union Station, and get a haircut to spiff up before chasing the hookers etc.  The barbers would get their story while cutting their hair - and if they were a rube, they'd cut a "V" into their hair at the nape of their neck, so the flim flammers could spot the patsy or "V"ictim.  The barbers of course got kickbacks from the scammers.  From the same book - Whorehouses with red lights on the porch originated here, as well as Denver was the first "cow town".  All interesting history, much more.

Spoof, he is still at home in Zephyrhills,fl. No longer rides a valk, riding a 3 wheel stallion bike.
He has had parts listed from his wrecked bike for over a year. Plus his health would not allow him to travel, he was in the hospital here last week for extremely high blood pressure.

I got the same Email Mark.  I knew it was bogus, but you did the right thing posting it up.

I've been in Istanbul many times and had a blast and never got mugged.
