I got my seat redone by a local upholsterer and he did a great job.

I told him to do what he would like and I was not disappointed.

I love the stitching he did.  He did it freehand.

I talked to a Corbin rep and asked him about recovering a Corbin seat. He said that they would charge 60% of the cost of a new seat, in this case would be 60% of $493 which comes to $296 plus shipping.

Looks like your guy did an excellent job, you should be a happy camper. cooldude

Looks great. I'm always amazed at the talent those artists have when it come to design and sewing. I can't even sign my name three times and have it look the same.  Grin

Did they do it in leather??

He did the seat in marine grade vinyl and marine thread.  What they use on boat seats.  I didn't want leather because the original covering always made my butt wet if it rained.  Even after the rain stopped, the leather would hold the wetness.  He also sprayed it with a product so that the sun would not make the seat hot.  It stays cool to the touch even on the hottest days.  He told me that it is a marine product that he uses on all the boat seats he covers.

We went to the Corbin outlet store near Daytona Beach last week.
My wife's bike has a Speedstar/Corbin leather "touring" seat, and she feels that it is not as comfy as it should be.
The Corbin rep. told us to "treat the leather" to make it more pliable, and if that doesn't work to send it to there facility in CA for rework.
The rep. said to include his business card and they would rework the seat for only the return shipping charges.

VERY nice seat bscrive!

I'm having my Corbin seats redone now by a guy here in DFW (thanks to WDAN for the referral) - Driver, passenger and both back rests, and since the Corbins were "broken in" by the P.O's (who I think were substantially larger than my better half and myself), I'm having gel pads pocketed into the OEM foam and covered by thin layer of foam.  Hoping for a slight adjustment to seating position, and a little softer seat (but not the butt-numbing softness of the Honda OEM seats).

My upholstery guy is also using marine grade vinyl to recover.  I've not asked for any decorative stitching.

He explained that the marine grade vinyl will stand up to the Texas heat/cold/wet/dry cycles better, be less "slippery" than leather, and not get as hot as leather does.  Told me it's something in the chemistry of the marine vinyl.  He said that he'd only recommend leather for bikes in the North, that only come out in the lovely, mild summers  angel

Old2soon  - WRT your question on costs in the US.

Material costs: the two gel pads and extra foam covering were $65 each, and the vinyl about $130.

Labor is going to run $300-$400.

I can tell you that I asked around, and got answers from "I won't touch a Corbin seat" to "$800 to recover in standard vinyl", so I was very pleased to find the guy who's doing the padding and reupholstering, as I didn't want to send them back to Corbin and pay 75% the cost of a new seat just  to have them recovered.

Of course final judgement is reserved until we've gotten them back and done a long ride on them, but I'm excitedly optimistic, based on the recommendation and my interaction with the upholsterer to date.

Looks very nice. Just a suggestion; IMHO The stitching is obviously of a pinstriping design so in that spirit, you might want to get a striper to duplicate the design somewhere on your bike and then as people see it they can wonder which came first, the stripe or the stitch.

The seat cost me $400 to get done.  I had to remove the rivets and help him remove the old covering from the seat.  Corbin glues the covering to the padding and we had to use a special solution to dissolve the glue but not damage the foam.  It took us about 45mins to remove the rivets and seat cover.  I also got him to add sone extra foam to the front of the seat.  He sowed the new cover to an extra thick layer of memory foam as well.  He was very proud of his work and said that everyone who came in and saw it just loved it.

When the weather gets better he wants to take a picture of it on my valk to put on his web page.

As for the spray he uses to keep the seat cool, he told me the name but I forget.  I will try to remember to call him next week and ask.
