I've been by Shiprock several times in my travels and wondered about its history, I didn't realize it was on the Navaho Reservation...seeing it from the highway has a grand view.....

But the other day I saw an ariel view that made me make this post, I didn't realize how alone on the landscrape it is....

It turns out that it's the center of a volcano that the sides have fallen away, the Navaho consider it a sacret place, one of the stories go that their young men use to go there for their vision quest... the Navaho have ban climbing on the reservation land about 30 years ago due to a climbers death, I'm not even sure if you can get up close to it....  if you're ever in this area be sure to check it out, all of that area in New Mexico is interesting....good place to ride if you're looking to plan a trip.... cooldude

Great post, thanks.  I've gone past it several times and wondered about it.  Seems to me I saw some signs once upon a time that were advertizing ice caves in Shiprock that could be toured, but that was probably 10 years ago.

Nice post. I've been by there a couple of times.  As you indicated it's a volcanic plug.  It is just so impressive and can be seen from huge distances.  As I recall it's just short of 1600 feet high!
