I just watched Fox News. They were interviewing a former Marine who took a picture of kids using a Women's Vietnan Memorial as a jungle jim while parents encouraged them.

The picture is a photo of a DC memorial which shows two nurses tending a wounded soldier or Marine.
Two kids are climbing all over the memorial! The Marine who took the picture reminded the parents of this bad behavior but it probably went in one ear and out their ars.... other ear.

The ignorance and disrespect from the mostly younger generation is unbelievably.  This is similar to the video of the soldier guarding the Unknown Soldier tomb at Arlington chewing out people talking and laughing at that solemn site. Or how about the pic of the veteran in a wheelchair is the only one standing and saluting when Old Glory goes past in a parade.

i find this almost every day, ongoing disrespect and ignorance.  I really get ticked when i think back when I was raised differently. I would've gotten my fanny warmed nicely for things that parents shrug off today.

Had to rant. Servicemen and Servicewomen ,past and present, get the short end from these shallow thinkers.

I won't even go into the idiots "not seeing" motorcyclists because of texting with their finger up...........

And THAT'S how I really feel!!  Smiley

Ignorance is a fact of life, which is a lack of understanding and a lack of information.  Stupidity is a fact of choice, which is knowing better, but don't care for others and lacks respect for anything.

Just read the article and saw the pictures.  Not even a vet and I am disgusted that the parents would allow this to happen.

Wayne,

Each Memorial Day weekend I head to DC to attend and show support to all who served. I never served, and feel it my duty to personally thank each and every Veteran I meet while I am down there.

When I visited the Korean War Memorial, there were about a dozen asian students sitting atop the way having their pictures taken.

They may not have understood English when I showed up, but you can bet you arse they knew exactly what i was saying to them to get them off that memorial! tickedoff tickedoff There were many people there that day that dared not speak their minds...I do not hold my tongue when extreme levels of disrespect are shown to the Memorials of our fallen heroes! I told their tour guide that this is an area to be respectful, not an PLAY GROUND. She ushered them all out of the area.

The level of respect on all levels has certainly fallen to the wayside.

Those here that have met me KNOW how shy and retiring I am!  Roll Eyes I am NOT above reminding folks what is expected of them and why it's expected when the National Anthem is played and The Flag is displayed. AND I'm NOT above reminding them what it takes and what it took to continue to Honor Our Flag. Wayne-I have been right there by the Women's Memorial. While it may be made of bronze it did in fact "talk to me"! When I was there I looked up with the Nurse for the dust off. And I agree-those kids NEED and DESERVE an ass whipping. As do the parents of those little darlins! Sorta puts me in mind of the idiot ass scout master that kicked over the centuries old rock formation out west. BUT as I understand it folks have the "right' to disrespect Our Flag-they just better not do it around me. RIDE SAFE.

Saw Derek Jeter and another ball player being interviewed, followed by question and answer.  Many kids in the audience.  When the kids got up they had to say who their question was for and then ask the question.  First kid "Uh, this question is for Jeter".  Next kid, "This question is for Jeter".  And on it went.  Not one kid said Mr. Jeter, or even "This question is for Derek."  And no adult corrected any of the kids.

When I order at the counter (any counter), I say "May I please have ……"  The cashiers or clerks look at me funny.  Guess they hear "Let me getta ……." all day that actually hearing politeness is foreign to their ears.

Big Rig.   I'm a Korean War Vet and I was amazed to hear what you said.  The South Koreans, i know ,are very appreciative of what the US and other countries did for them.  I wouldn't expect South Koreans to show disrespect.

At the present, i am so disillusioned about Washington DC and our elected officials that I've taken my name off the list for an Honor Flight.  They have soiled our history and future.  I'm afraid that if i would go and see more disrespect, I would verbally kickass and embarrass my fellow vets.

My daughter in 8th grade at the time took a school trip to D.C. and a group of young adults were chatting.  They loudly told them to be quite.  Needless to say, she said you could hear a pin drop after that.  She said it sort of scared the crap out of some in the group.

Wayne, you should rethink that...  My dad (WWII Vet), got to go a few years back, and it really moved him.  Now, he probably couldn't make the trip, so I'm glad he got to go when he did.

As to the 'respect' thing - Like O2S & Big Rig, I've been known to speak up when no one else will...  There have been a few High School football games, when my boys were playing, that I corrected a few in the crowd as to the correct way to respect the flag and the anthem...

I didn't see the video so I don't know how old the kids are. But it seems its the parents that need the verbal ass whooping, not the kids.

I would think that if the Draft was reinstated, that might have a different effect on a lot more people.  As it is, less than 1% of the US population is in the military and they are all voluntary.
If every young Guy and Gal could possibly be called into service when they turn 18, it might change some peoples thought process.  This includes some in DC who want to start wars by sending other peoples sons and daughters off to die when they themselves never served nor will their kids.   Lips Sealed

I am not trying ato take over this post but I have a situation I have come on more than once.
At a mall or outside somewhere I see the American Flag sewn on the ass of some kids pants. I have said something to the effect that it is very disrespectful. I have been from ignored , to the usual four letter and off. I have told them that if it wasn't for veterans , you would not have the right to be a moron like you are.
I tell them that ,"all gave some," and some gave all".  They just do not get it.
I have been tempted to rip the Flags off , but my wife says I would get into more trouble. Also , the morons that do not stand for the anthem. You may be from a different country , but just show some respect.

One of the best comments on the video's. " It is a sad day when a Marine has to discipline your kid for you "

" Thank you to everyone that has served, is serving and will serve

Kids are like this all over.  I still remember my Dad, a Korean War Vet,  was sitting outside his house drinking a beer in his retirement and some high school kids threw wrappers and cans into his yard after school.  My Dad barked out, 'PICK IT UP'.  The kids just flipped him off and never said a word just kept walking.  Dad told me if he was younger, he would have made them pick up the trash they threw in his yard.

Trust me, if I was home still at the time, they would have for sure.   cooldude

I even get a tad bit upset at cars driving by tossing out cigarette butts onto the road.

Solo1,

This is why history is allowed to repeat itself.

People forget quickly.  The past wars to most are just something that happened in the past.  To them it has no relevance or meaning.

Respect, Consideration, and a few other words I can think of, are they even taught or instilled in todays youth anymore? Just my take on these two seemingly gone by the wayside subjects. They come with discipline in the home to begin with. That in itself has gone MIA for the most part.
Where have I seen the most respect / consideration, in the southern states. I hear yes ma'am an no sir down south more than I ever do up here.
It IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW TO SPANK YOUR KIDS! It is against the law to beat them and there is a difference. But the school systems here have instilled this myth in the kids heads and i've heard it time and time again. I've handled cases where kids call the law because their father whacked em on the ass. When I asked the kid whom told them spanking was against the law?  The usual reply is: "they told us in school".
If my mother / father would have disciplined us today as they did when I was growing up, I would have had to visited them in jail. I have no regrets and I have respect.

I did not serve, my Grandfather served in WWI,Dad in WWII. Have several friends that served in Vietman and the Gulf.
I ride with the Patriot Guard in rememberance of my Dad who was an honor guard on several occasions during WWII.
To all that served this great nation I say a heartfelt thank you. My wife and I thank every vet we meet when out and about.
The young kids and young adults of today have a warped sense of entitlement and no respect for anything or anyone that says the world  does "NOT" revolve around their sorry asses!!!!!!!!
They need to do a little ditch digging and not be so pampered, maybe live without running water and have an outhouse during a hard winter.
Scary what our future holds.
Once again to all who served,Thank You and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

True enough...... but this does not make my assertion any less true.

Here was a boy trying to show respect and pride in his brother's service, but the school wouldn't have it.  I understand there would be a rule about crazy hair, purple hair, etc.  But this boy's haircut did not seem crazy or disruptive to me.

I wore a very military high and tight flat top (with butch wax in front) thru most of elementary, and it never caused any problems.  Pretty common really.

So they made him shave his whole head, and I guess that was less disruptive.

Wayne,

Get your name back on that list...The memorials are there to honor all of those who served!

You served, you deserve to be in DC well before the chuckle heads that are their daily!

If you let me know when you are going, I would ride down and meet you there! I am sure there are quite a few of your fellow Valk Riders that would do the same thing.

Please consider it, I would like to personally THANK YOU for your service and would like to shake your hand!

I meet some kids today that are polite, respectful and smart. Many of these kids seem a heck of a lot smarter and more mature than I was at that age. And I'm happy as heck when I come across kids like this because I also come across some [ well more than just some] that are young PITA's.
It seems there is an ever increasing divide in how kids and adults conduct themselves today. Maybe its always been this way and I just haven't paid that much attention, but, rude, stupid people today seem to be on the increase and they %@$@& me off.

here is a news article regarding the incident. reading through some of the comments at the end it just amazes me how people will say "let kids be kids and let them play".

Geeze...just looking at the statue one can tell it's a sad memorial, there's a person (soldier) laying in a woman's arms. How do you let kids play on that?!!

http://patch.com/district-columbia/georgetown/awkward-moment-kids-play-war-memorial-ok-or-not-0

not one of the comments mention the hard work that went into the statue or even who the sculptor/artist was and what this statue could have meant to whomever created it.

I know if I was there, I would have said "GET OFF OF THERE"
