Seems like a lot of you guys have enjoyed seeing my son's wrestling exploits.

I took Ben to the Hyway State Championships yesterday. Sat 3.28.15. The back story is that there are 2 wrestling organizations in Indiana. ISWA and Hyway. Competing factions. thus... 2 state tournaments. Ben won the ISWA state tournament a few weeks ago.

The age groups are different for HyWay. Both group kids into 2 year age groups. Ben is in the old class for ISWA and the young class for Hyway. And Hyway has no divisions over 85 lbs. So Ben was simply "heavyweight". All three of his opponents yesterday were 3rd graders, a year older than Ben, and all heavier kids too. By at least 6 lbs and the 2nd kid was 23 lbs heavier. Ben won the 1st two matches. 1st one he won 2-0. The 2nd one he pinned the kid in the 3rd period, which I did not get on video. Sorry. The 3rd match he was ahead 3-0 going into the the 3rd period where he gave up a take down for 2 points, and a near fall for 3 points, and ended up in 2nd place. He did awesome, and was 10 seconds from winning another state championship, despite being in the younger year class. That doesn't happen much, as you all know that there is a lot of physical development in a year at this age. Enjoy the videos.

He wrestled great and showed a lot of heart. I am as proud of him for this tournament as I have ever been. It challenged him like never before and he was SOOOO close. I also had a referee come to me after a match, and compliment me on Ben's sportsmanship. He said he made several very classy comments to the other kid during and after the match. And in the end... that's the goal. To raise a kid that wins and loses with class, and is an overall good man.

We are going to Iowa for the USA (ISWA's parent organisation) Nationals next weekend for the National Tourney. The best of the best from around the country. But, he'll be in the older age class for this one. Wish us luck!

Ben's still wrestling. We went to the Iowa Nationals in Cedar Falls on 4-3 and 4-4. Guess what? Ben won the thing and got named a USAW All American and National Champion! It was actually a pretty weak tournament. Just not a lot of 90 lb 8 year olds who's parents are willing to travel to toss them onto the mat with a kid who's Track Wrestling record (Searchable by folks that do these tournaments) in 20-2 with 13 pins and 4 majors. And believe me, there are people that will avoid you at a tournament if they don't think they can beat you.

He has wrestled two local freestyle tournaments since then, and a Grecco-Roman tournament as well, and has won all three of those too. Overall this season he's 27-2, with a loss to a kid he has since beaten 5 times, and the loss noted above to the older/heavier kid. It's been a great season.

We have tournaments at our home club this weekend. Freestyle at 10:00 on Saturday, with a baseball game at 12:30. Then Grecco at 4:00. Followed by folkstyle on Sunday morning. They call it the "Dominator Series". If anyone wins all 3, they give them a giant, WWE style belt as a trophy. Busy weekend. Then... next weekend he has his first communion. The the following weekend is the last of wrestling season with the ISWA state Freestyle and Grecco Tournaments. Then... only Baseball for a couple months.

Big fun.

Congrats to Ben and his proud dad. Liked the sportsmanship comment form the ref as well.

My middle son wrestled for 1 year whne he was 8.  Wrestled every weekend..  There was a rule that there always be a coach by the matt when a child was wrestling.
We had all coachs tied up at other matts.  They made a anouncement that we needed a coach for one our wrestlers. I jumped up and went to the matt.  The young boy looked very nervous.  I asked if he was ok.  He told me that he had already lost once that day.  I asked him if he played baseball?  He  looked at me like I was nuts but answered yes.  I then said "Can't you strike out your first at bat and hit a homerun the next at bat?" He replied yes.  I smiled and told him to go kick the kids butt, which he proceeded to do.  He came off the matt smiling.

He actually looks pretty confident.

The big differences between this year and last are that he cares about winning, he actually pays attention to scores and his team mates, and watches what they are doing, and he EXPECTS to win when he walks onto the mat. Whenever he walks out there... he's expecting to win. That goes a LONG way when you're in a fight... and that's what this really is. A fight, with good sportsmanship and rules.

He's a great kid. He wishes his opponents good luck. Tells them good match. And means it.

I am a proud daddy.

If anyone is bored enough to watch youth wrestling... This should give you a fix. All you could ever stand probably.

The first of these might be repeats. They are from the Hyway State tournament, what I think was Ben’s best competition of the year. If you want to see him winning fast… watch the later videos. The early ones are slower, but he was wrestling up a year and up in weight, and takes a loss.

I think this kid was probably a superior wrestler, and Ben gives a superior effort in this match. In my opinion his best EFFORT of the season.
