I would appreciate feedback from residents of Montana. I have an opportunity to do some work up in Billings the first week in May. I have always wanted to ride the Big Sky Country and thought this to be a good opportunity to ride up there. I however have heard of snow storms through June . And so my question is... if I hit the weather right is riding up from Wyoming into Billings, MT do able in early May? Or would you advise against it? Thanks ahead of time, Joshcornkid

I live in SW ND, so kind of the same. Billings itself is kind of like Rapid City. It tends to be much milder than surrounding areas.
You can have any kind of weather. A lot of it will be very nice, but cool. Evenings and mornings WILL be cool, probably upper 30's to 40's. Days, 60's, 70's, even 80's possible. There is, however, risk of cold, rains, snow, even blizzards, although rare at that date.
If you do NOT take the bike, the weather will almost assuredly be great. If you do take it, who knows? LOL

Grew up in Billings, lived there for 20 years...you just never know. To me the weather is a lot like Denver (maybe a few degrees cooler). It is protected by the "cliffs" on one side. Getting there may be the issue. I would be more worried about riding through Wyoming in early May!

Thanks for the advice. Work slowing down for you? Going to be able to meet up with us for some rides this year?

Beartooth pass don't open till June 1st I believe. Be good riding that since your close. Custer Battlefield is close and the Bighorn Mntns of WY is nice but depends on the weather.

Billings weather might be nice in May, but if you ride up from Pueblo you could be hit by nasty weather in WY. If you take I-25 up thru Wy you could get hit by a snow storm in May. I lived in Rawlins, Wy for 23 years. Saw a several snow storms in May. If you got a several days in which you could ride and watch the weather, you probably could ride up without problems. As been said warm days, cold nights.

Keep an eye on the extended weather forecast. Weather forecasting is getting remarkably good although they can have some spectacular failures for specific areas.

Billings weather is usually pretty mild but it's Montana if you don't like the weather wait five minutes it will change. Early May is a gamble around town probably be ok long trips thru the passes might be questionable. If it were me I'd trailer the bike up here weather thru WY would concern me more. Take advantage of the nice days while your on the bike.
