my 99 Valk

Salem, Oregon

« on: April 11, 2015, 06:32:34 PM »

Seems I have one of those pesky gremlins in my machine (99 IS), doesn't appear to be dangerous (hopefully) just annoying as hell. When approaching a stop I will use front and rear brake in order to come to a smooth(er) stop, as I slowly pull the front brake there is a very audible click most of the time when the forks compress but also has happened on rebound. It does appear that I can actually feel it in my left foot (while on the peg), I somewhat discount this as I know sound and feel can travel in mysterious ways. I have only been using my front brake in this manor for a short time (since I found it allows for a more controlled stop, thus I can point to no actual event or item that had taken place around the time this phenomenon began.  One thing I have noted is it only happens once each stop, and I cannot make it happen again until the next stop, no matter how many times I pull the front brake during that stop. I am hoping someone else has had a similar experience and has solved it, but do not hold much hope as my doctor always tells me "if its weird you will get it", which is most likely the case here.
By the way I have looked the bike over for any dangling or loose items with no success. Any help will surely be appreciated,
Thanks Manny

Normal.
Glad to hear you learned to use the front brake.
It has twice the stopping power as rear and you won't slide the front tire as you would the rear.
Personally I use 75-80% front brake for stopping.

Also, there is an audible (if not quite tactile) click in the front brake light switch at the lever.  When you hear it, you know it is working.

That click you hear can be eliminated. It's some kind of little keeper device that has to do with the pads. I told my mechanic when he was working on my bike and he said no problem and tried to show me what was happening but went right over my head. He fixed it in 5 seconds. Take this to the tech board and some of those geniuses will tell you what's happening and how to fix it. Again, it's some kind of retainer that has to do with the pads.

I slid my front tire last Saturday. As soon as I felt it start to slide I let off the brake lever. I had managed to slow down enough for the dog to clear the road.... I still left about 15' of black on the road.

Front Fork Triple Tree big nut could be loose.

Tighten that, Oh God I should have put this on the Tech Side.

Have fun, but keep your nuts tight.
