I've been reading about this plan since the late '90s and remember the US DOT just mandated all new vehicles must be abled to be tracked via a blackbox.

And just where are these tax monies to go ? My guess would be the general fund, so in liberal states such as California and New York the welfare programs will get the money before the roads will. New York has been thinking about a similar program. Whats next, a tax on the amount of air we breathe ?

Commercial Vehicles have been doing this for decades. I do NOT want it in private vehicles.
If, over the last several decades, ALL the money that was raised by fuel taxes and meant to be spent on roads and bridges, had actually been SPENT on roads and bridges and not diverted to other uses, our roads and bridges would be in MUCH better shape!
I would actually not mind paying a little more in fuel taxes, IF, IF, IF, there was someway to be sure 100% of ALL fuel taxes went to roads and bridges! However, I have NO such faith in the powers that be. NONE what so ever.

The MRF, AMA, and ABATE have been warning about this for years, but most riders have been ignoring these warnings. These are not "Paranoid Knee Jerk" reactionary groups, rather they are "governmental watchdogs".
Here in MI, it may be used to determine how much to tax your vehicles on a yearly basis. The state of MI wants to raise the sales tax an additional one percent. This one percent hike is touted to repair our states roads, but in truth the tax is not earmarked for road repair. The monies collected will go into the "General Fund" to pay off debts incurred by our ledgeslators.
"Taxing by mile", is a way to earmark funds, but it is also a way the "government" can track the vehicle use and where people travel (nee Big Brother).
I've been posting on this board and telling people to get involved because our rights are being restricted and we are being taxed and tracked. It is only going to get worse,...but we can at least slow the progression of these intrusions by getting involved in local, state, and federal governing by joining the motorcycle rights movement, as well as other consumer watchdog groups (nee NRA).
If we sit on our duffs,.....we will see many of our rights disappear very quickly. Maybe well before we pass on.

Besides a giant overhaul, simplification, flat, straight, fair tax, abolish the IRS, the only new tax law I would favor is one that provides that any politician who proposes a tax increase of any kind for any purpose gets stood before a wall and shot.
This country is at a tipping point in a lot of areas, and (the combined multitude of) taxes is right at the top of the list.
From here on out, the only extra revenue for government should come from government cutbacks.

Up here in Ontario. Our last liberal premier was considering putting a water meter on all wells. We would have to pay for the water we pump out of the ground. He backed off, but I am sure it will come back sometime in the future. Morons.

The theory behind the tax-per-mile is to replace taxing by the gallon. Seems we are getting too fuel efficient cars/truck. Not getting enough tax $$ at the pump.
I agree all the gas tax money should be going to roads. I know it isn't.
According to the folks behind this idea, they won't be collecting any thing else but number of miles driven since last fill up. YEAH RIGHT!!! Don't believe them either.
If Oregon goes this way, how will they handle cars without the electronics to report miles and cars from out of state? Thankfully this is just a pilot not the real thing. They have a lot a problems to work out.
By the way Progressive is not the only insurance company wanting to use Snap Shot.

They HAVE to collect where you are, because they have to pay the state where the miles were driven, just like a commercial truck. Now, the state gets the tax paid per gallon in their state. They would have to track where you are. And, don't let them tell you they won't!

You can inhale for free, but they want to tax you on the carbon you exhale or fart out. Well, we do have an Agency that is increasing regulations on carbon emissions and cow farts, so, why not our own ? Isn't it a natural progression for the progressives ?

In France the major highways - peage - are toll roads. At one time the gendarmes would stand by the toll booths checking toll tickets for time and distance covered from entering the toll road or previous toll booth. Speeding??? Instant fine. Strange how this practise seemed to mainly occur during the annual vaction/hoildays for the English.

I guess the speeding fine would be based on the average mph. Not the fastest speed because that really can't be determined.

To me, if you want it to be fair. Start with a number. X. Multiply it by weight number W. And by a miles number m. Notice that the weight number is much larger than the miles number. Then write the law in a way to guarantee the revenue goes to roads only. Ever. Write it to say the governor is criminally culpable for revenue going to any other area of government. Do away with all gasoline taxes. Bring in an independent consultant to figure out what the values of X, W, and m will be. Ask me to be that consultant and I will guarantee the value for W will be many many many times that of the value m.

Momz, thank you for being a fellow freedom fighter. A lot of typing goes on here. I wonder how much goes to Washington, or to our members State Capitols? Or how many phone calls are made or hand written letters? ABATE of Florida had its annual ride to Tallahassee just this past weekend. I don't know how many registered motorcycles there are in the State of Florida or in Citrus County. I was the ONLY person from my county, to go and there were barely 200, from the rest of the State! But mention a ride to Burger King, and there will be 300 hits and 60 comments!!!!!

In todays paper (Just the important parts - not that good a typer) ODOT rolls out pay-per mile program OReGO The program is meant to make up for lost gas tax revenue from drivers of fuel-efficient and electric cars ODOT can now start recruiting 5,000 drivers for a voluntary trial run that's slated to start in July.
Participants will pay 1.5 cents per mile while driving on public streets and highways, using either GPS Tracking, or a device that doesn't use GPS. The mileage information will be automatically submitted to Oregon Treasury.
During the test period drivers will continue to pay the fuel tax. But they will document how many miles they drive, how much fuel they buy in Oregon, and how much they pay. At the end, they'll get either a bill or a rebate check to offset money spent on the state gas tax.
So it gets started in July. I went to their website. They have a calculator that I put in numbers for my Valk. About 1000 miles/month and 37 mpg. They show I pay $8.11 in state tax and would pay $15 for tax by mile. Doesn't sound good. Also did it for vehicle I drive only getting 28 mpg, still have to pay more. Also they said they info would be automatically transmitted to Treasury. Don't like that either. Hopefully this test will fail.

I would volunteer to swing the axe on the head chopping block for any politician who want's any increase in taxes for any purpose. That's my idea of being a civic minded good citizen.

In England the politicians made a push to have people drive diesel cars. Less pollution and better mpg they said.
So people switched.
The politicians noticed their tax revenue from gasoline sales went down so the BASTARDS increased the tax on diesel making it more expensive than gasoline.
