From Wikipedia:

Spearfish gets its name from the creek that the Sioux Indians used to SPEAR FISH in.

Spearfish Creek is a fast-moving creek that emerges from Spearfish Canyon at Spearfish. It runs roughly south to north through the center of town (parallel to Canyon Street), year round. The creek is unusual in that it freezes from the bottom up, instead of icing over. This unusual phenomenon occurs due to the very fast rate at which the creek flows. This speed prevents ice from forming except along the bottom of the creek bed where friction and turbulence allow the water to slow down long enough to freeze. Since the creek continues to flow atop this ice, the water level of the creek gradually rises as more ice accumulates on the bottom, in some cases causing flooding on the north side of town where the channel is not as deep.

As for being prepared for weather (my post yesterday).....The average High in June is only 77 degrees and 52 for an average low.  PERFECT RIDING WEATHER!  But, like I said, the coldest rain I have ever ridden in (couldn't get my credit card out to pay for gas because my hands were shaking so bad) was in South Dakota in June - so, just be prepared - a nice coat.....don't leave home without it.

Also from Wikipedia:

Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest recorded temperature change. On January 22, 1943 at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was −4°F (−20°C). The Chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45 °F (+7 °C) above zero. The 49 °F (27 °C) rise in two minutes set a world record that still holds. By 9:00 a.m., the temperature had risen to 54 °F (12 °C). Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to −4 °F (−20 °C). The 58 °F (32 °C) drop took only 27 minutes. The sudden change in temperatures caused glass windows to crack and windshields to instantly frost over.

So, just bring a jacket (my suggestion) if you were not planning on it.  You just never know.  Now, when we were riding in the snow caps of the Bighorns, it was a nice cold - windbreaker type riding weather, but that rain that caught us - boy howdy, it was COLD!

Man, in June, it is going to be AWESOME to get into some 70's temperatures for riding, fellowship and general parking lot lie telling and tire kicking.

Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait......... cooldude cooldude  Man, this is going to be such a great place to pass a large time.......Staff, GOOD JOB!

Thanks for the info. Wasn't planning on a jacket but I will now. Especially for the wife, she gets a little grumpy when she's cold .  Smiley

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Also, when looking at the temps.  Mornings are ALWAYS cool.  If you head up into the Hills, it will get cooler.

Wear layers!

I have that dilemma this year.  I always have a jacket, but which one.  I've been in those hills in August but not in early June.  I'm constdering the mesh touring jacket, the heated vest and other layers...
