I have a package coming to me from the UK.

It landed in NY April 22 into customs and left customs April 25th.

Now it's on a magical mystery tour of the USA. What a testimony to a badly run Govt entity. And they want to run our healthcare.  Angry

I order some brake pads the other day and the person told not to use regular mail for shipment. She said it's been taking 15 days for the packages to be delivered recently.

I swore off using USPS when the lost a car tire in the mail. They must have big cracks for things to fall though to loose that. And of course that fiasco cost me around $150.

On the other hand, I put a package in my rural mailbox in Greenwood, Indiana on Saturday afternoon, and it was delivered to the recipient in Muscatine, Iowa, just after noon on Monday.  For $3.50.

(Although there has been an occasional misdirect, I find USPS to be pretty fast, reliable, and less expensive than the alternatives).

Watch out, its a ruse.  It'll arrive with a $87 postage due.  You get the idea that moving tonnage makes people look industrious and busy; it doesn't matter where it goes, just get it on the plane.

(In AL) I once packed everything I absolutely needed for military service in Turkey, and they sent it to Korea (for 60 days).

I guess one remote, end of the world location is as good as another. (That was the only logic I could ever assign).

First off Paul I use it so my wife keeps a job cooldude and it is not run by the Government( it is owned by the gov.) but it is run by a union that has to win a bid to run and make the rules for the P.O. So not actually Gov run and hasn't been for years. Contract comes up for rebid just like any other contract job.

It also helps fill the belly of an airplane. The USPS mail contract is a lucrative customer to supplement the passenger revenue.

So much better. The tire is still lost, I'm sure no other shipper could have done that so well.

As far as not government, where did that 4 billion go the not government gave them? did USPS turn a profit or even break even last year?

Not many use postage stamps any longer, thus lost revenue, almost everything we pay bill wise can be autopay.  that is what we do.  We only go thru a book of stamps at most once every 2 years or so.  Post office doesn't make any money off of me and if everyone was like me, the post office would be out of business.  Although, they might as well be since our local post office is only open 4-5 hours per day is about it with a 2 hour lunch.  Who the F needs a 2 hour lunch break, let alone 1 hour?

I'm sure it is not easy work, but for the good pay and benefits and less hours worked, it is not a bad gig I don't think?  Pretty hard to get in I hear as well.

Actually hasn't been run by govt. for decades,  heavily regulated by govt yes but not run  by govt.  ALL of the USPS operating expenses are paid by revenue from mailings and zero from govt. (NO TAX DOLLARS)

my experience from being in the post office and being a customer is; if your mail descends into the seventh ring of hell (any large hub, LA, NYC, Miami, Chicago, etc, etc..) add on several days for delivery.

they are simply overwhelmed with mail on a daily basis.

Reminds me of the story about the guy who was buying a ticket at the airport.

He said:  "I would like a direct flight to Dallas, Texas.  But I want my luggage to go by way of Los Angeles, Denver then Kansas City ."

The ticket agent said, "Sir we don't do that!"

The man said...  "You did it last time!"  2funny   Grin   crazy2

Sometimes things go wrong.
I agree, the USPS is horrible.
I mean, why send something in the mail for a good price, when you could just drive 200 or 300 or 1000 miles and deliver it yourself and save the stamp?
20+ years of selling and buying from all over the country and I've only had one real delay in the mail.
There are the same horror stories about UPS and Fed X.
I guess, if you want, you can find the bad in anything and let it consume you.

I still send the bills through the mail.
Still write checks, still turn on the wipers with a switch on the dash.
Get your bank account drained by some loser in Baltimore, (go figure), once and its game over for autopay. Same for the PO box. Every other month the bank of mail boxes by the road gets pried open.
Desert mail for miles. Used to be a federal crime. Now, probably just kids who never got read to.

$10.95 USPS over-nite guaranteed delivery envelope with time sensitive legal papers from Il. to Co. sent Tuesday at 8:00 AM. arrived in Greeley Monday afternoon at 3:00 PM.  ??? Had to file an extension and no refund on the $10.95.  Oh well, still better than driving out there to get them signed.   cooldude

My experiences exactly.  I've only had one bad experience....and that was shipping an item to England.  It took a little over a month for it to get there, but get there it did...finally.

Other than that, I've had no problems with them.

I've had worse experiences with UPS.  Items never being delivered, delivered to wrong address, being lost, etc.

Never have had a problem with FedEx.

My one disaster that still makes me smile was I had to order a batch of wood stain from New Jersey.  I needed a gallon but had to buy two at that point.  UPS shipped from New Jersey to here in FL but it never got here.  Finally I got a notice, "SHIPMENT DESTROYED, CONTACT SENDER"  I got a new shipment of ONE gallon and it made it fine, only cost me time.  That still makes me smile, two gallons of BROWN" stain squished.  Do you know how much mess a quart of stain half full makes when you tip it over on accident.  Holy Cow, two gallons "destroyed" must have looked like a melted UPS truck somewhere  Evil

I guess you're saying to "take it yourself"?

The last time I tried to use USPS for a letter I ended up doing exactly that to make sure the item got there, because after three weeks the recipient still hadn't received it!!
And it was only 120 miles away! I could've walked there and back by that time!!

Bought a rear wheel from Wizard (RIP) and sent him a check in the mail.  After the three weeks we eventually ended up meeting half ways so I could pay him in person to make sure he got it this time!!!
And it cost me an extra $25 to stop payment on the "lost" check.

I'm probably a normal person when it comes to ordering through Amazon, ebay, etc... and never had a problem when items comes through FedEx or UPS.

My dad is probably flipping over in his grave at this because he worked for 40 years as a mailman, but he was very dedicated to his job and went above and beyond his duty to serve his patrons! I remember a few times where someone was waiting for an important package/letter and it showed up at the post office after he finished his route, he'd make a special trip on his own time to deliver it that same day instead of waiting when he did his route the next day!

Obviously this type of dedication is unheard of today!!

Just to present the other side, I've had two important packages delivered in the past two weeks by the USPS, two by FedEx and one by UPS.  I have no trouble dealing with any one of them (Should I say that out loud?) and am thankful things move as well and as quickly as they do around the country these days.

I've scheduled no orders from the UK.   Wink

Recently, I've been getting my BOW agenda late by one day.  The packet is mailed from New Haven (City Hall is one block from the post office) and I live just one mile away in the same zip code (New Haven has only one zip code).

However, our clerk treasurer has found out that our mail now goes from New Haven to Indianapolis then back to us, takes an extra day and we had to plan for that.  A real head scratcher.  Guess some needed to justify their existence.
