So yer driving/riding through a parking lot

You see the reversing lights of a vehicle parked nose in illuminate.

You can't see the drivers face because of the vehicles parked each side of them.

What action do you take?

Do you stop to allow them to reverse?

Do you sound your horn to warn them you are approaching and keep moving?

Do you just keep going and hope for the best?


Same question if you are a pedestrian with a brain who is paying attention to their surroundings.

Whenever I can I do a drive through into a parking spot that allows me to pull forward when leaving and sometimes I'll back into a parking spot.

IF I was in my 18 wheeler-go fer it!.   I go to wally wurld or other places with large lots I park far out with the cage and on the lines at the end with the Phatt Ghurl. When I park the Phatt Ghurl I try to put it to the inside of a light standard. Walking in the lot head on a swivel like I'm riding. I try very hard to NEVER GAMBLE on stoopid!   Up to this point in time my luck has held up!   RIDE SAFE.

This is mty pet peeve whether I am in the parked car reversing or in the approaching car.
The Reversing driver likely CANNOT SEE approaching traffic so it is only logical that he/she is given the space to continue reversing.  When I am approaching a car that is reversing like this I give way.  I hate it when they finally see you and pull back into the space.

After a number of "near misses" when backing my truck out and having a car shoot behind me, I now back out so da**ed slowly it surely pisses folks off.  But whipping out of the slot allows no time to react to the car that is suddenly there.

I will pull though if I can, often it's  not an option.

This rental has a back up alarm if something gets behind when backing up ... it's interesting how many beeps I get while in the process of backing out.  I guess I was raised with better manners than to squeeze though like so many folks do these days.

Even in the car, I would move to the other side of the lane from the side the reversing car is in giving them as much room as possible and then just wait.  If I can make eye contact, and I see brake lights, I go.

If they're coming out, and you can't see them looking at you, you better wait.

If I'm in the Mini, and there's an SUV or whatever (almost anything really  )
on the wrong side, I either have to creep out incrementally,  hoping that nobody's whipping
down the lane while talking on their cell phone, or wait until the owner of the
vehicle parked next to me comes out and leaves...

slow down for sure walking pace on a cycle no matter what.  If no eye contact or stoppage, I beep the horn and usually if NO stopping from them,  I stop.  If they see me and stop, I roll right on thru but over some more away from them.

Just last year a foreign driver, not to be racist,  was backing up from a grocery store and me behind him saw so I beeped the cycle horn.  He stopped and I went on thru, but low and behold if the idiot didn't see the buick lesabre behind me and smashed right into the rear passenger door panel. 

Got lucky I guess?  Was in Pizza Hut parking lot getting pizza for the family last year as well on cycle and coming right at had to lock up the brakes for the very elderly lady driving NEVER saw me right in front of her dead on straight in front.  I beeped and beeped and locked them up and finally she stopped.  How the hell you miss a 800lb. bike with headlights on both going 5-8 mph in a parking lot head on to head on??

Working in a grocery store I get to see this almost daily. I think you are best to stop and let them do their thing whether walking or riding. The ones that scare me the most are the ones that go at warp speed diagonally thru the parking lot. They will come at you from any angle.

If I see a conflict, I take evasive action rather than beeping my horn and depending on the other to take evasive action. Has worked well for me so far.

Don't know why I need a better horn since I rarely use the one on the bike and it's served the purpose when I have used it.

This isn't a "meep - meep" horn.  Rather it invokes the same respect and response a semi-truck commands.

Some [bleep] violates my right of way, and ONE BLAST from this horn and they stop - IMMEDIATELY.   Though I don't use the horn then park - don't need my seat slashed.

I'm on a lot of construction/demolition sites with heavy equipment moving around.
Rule is anything in reverse has right of way. You're supposed to stop.
Ask anybody that does "dirt work", bet they tell ya the same.

What  you said. Back into someone and it's "improper and unsafe backing". Doesn't much matter if  you get run over though.
