Excuse my ignorance.

Does the catcher have to move off the plate or can she "protect" it?

If the latter it looks to me like she set herself for a shoulder charge initiated by the runners.

First runner tucked in to try to skim by... catcher stepped back to hit her.

Second runner should have tucked down and aim directly for her elbow.

@$$hole catcher out of game, problem solved.

Unless ball is in hand, you are not allowed to impede the runner in any way.

Catcher is entirely in the wrong.  Umpires at that game should have ejected her.

Those umpires should be banned from that league.  Absolutely pathetic.

First event the catcher actually takes weight off her left leg and moved her left hip forward actually making herself less stable and then deflects the runners shoulder charge.

Steven Segal would be proud of her  Cheesy

Doesn't look like a shoulder charge to me.  Looks like runner was trying to tuck in and skim right behind catcher since she was in the path.  I've done the same multiple times... just barely brush the back of the catcher.

tough call really,  the elbow flairing back is not right though.

Depends on the league, but my experience with over 10 years of little league, high school, and underhand fast pitch being a catcher,  doesn't make it right, but not ejection material.   The elbow was flagrant, but wasn't a terrible push with the elbow.

A play at the plate possibly in some leagues (especially softball for adults) requires a slide into home plate if going to be a play at the plate.  I got ejected out of the adult league softball game for NOT sliding at the plate even though the catcher was totally in my way in my baseline NO way to avoid a collision and I was NOT going to slide since had shorts on.   I took him out totally blowing him over and he had to get medical attention we both butted heads, both bleeding, but I say if in my baseline and cannot be avoided right in my baseline,  I have a right to plow him over.  Rules are rules since I never slid, I got ejected out of the adult softball game

I NEVER as a catcher blocked the plate in runners baseline as a catcher always stood to the side/front/back or stradled the plate but NEVER in the runner's baseline, just good ethics.   The elbow could be ejected for it though in my opinion but not where she was standing was fine in front of the plate not too much in runners baseline if it wasn't for the stepback and elbow.

I also got ejected out of my last high school baseball game as a catcher since the other guy coming at me tried to take me out and I had the ball waiting and he was about 10' feet in front with a grin on his face attempting to plow me over even though he had plenty of time to stop and head back to third.  I ran at him, tagged him, and pushed him with my glove with ball in the glove and waited for the OUT call.   I flung him about 6' out of the baseline almost hitting the fence and the umpire never called an OUT so he tucked back into the baseline again and touched home plate calling him safe even though I did touch him with both hands/glove/ball in glove and pushed him hard out of the baseline.

I argued with the homeplate ump and appealed the call, but my arguing got me ejected.  After that, I had some more choice words for both umps since both were blind and needed glasses and that is exactly what I told them as well as asking how much the hometown team paid them off with.   A bad call is one thing, but a blind as a bat call is another.  Our coach never said a word which I think I said it all for him.  He didn't like the way I went about it, but blind is blind. You should have heard our parents watching the game, they were irrate as well at the umps.  We lost the game as well since another starter of ours got ejected out of the game as well and ended up playing with 8 players left, oh well.

You come in low like you need to slide and then take her out by the knees.

Agree, a good runner would have plowed her butt over one way or the other.

She wouldn't do it a 2nd time that is for sure.

The question I had was "did the umpire see this?" and looking at the video, yes he did. He was looking directly at the play.

I umpired for many years. This was deliberate. She intentionally struck another player. She didn't have the ball, there was no play to be made on the runner. This should have be an immediate dead ball and instant ejection and bases awarded at umpire's discretion. The coach should have demanded that. If not satisfied, instruct the players to slide, slide legal, and slide hard. Very hard. Everytime.

I was high school ump for 20+ years. No play at the plate. Intentional knockdown of runners. Unsportsmanlike conduct, that young lady is out of the game.

No right to be agressive. She will earn a reputation and some day, some way, someone will taker her out. Bottom line -Her own coach should have taken care of this and removed her even if the umps did nothing!
