I am not joking! I don't understand what and how it means to Hijack a thread, I am sure I have, but don't understand it true meaning! I don't know when I am stepping over the line.

Somebody posts a question about how to adjust his frammistat or something,
a couple of other posters chime in and then someone says, "and speaking of
frammistats, what do you think about those gonkulators?", after which the focus
of the thread becomes gonkulators... the thread has been hijacked...

I apologize for however many times I've hijacked a thread, I kind of run on
sometimes  Smiley

It's when you post a comment in a thread that has a topic significantly different than the original poster's topic.  It doesn't have to be malicious to be considered a hijack.  An example of this happened recently on the tech board, where the original topic was about an electrical problem.  Someone replied, and their signature line had a photo of their bike with a unique part on it.  Someone then replied asking about that unique part.  That was a hijack.  To prevent the hijack, the person should have started a new thread asking about the unique part.

The way I see things is, everything is relative to each other, and during the process, it tends to trigger other avenues.

When I originally posted about the young lady singing the National anthem, I hijacked my own post when i talked about myself.  However, I don't think it's a problem hijacking your own posts except the reader might not like the change of subject.   Smiley

Friendly hint, if you're getting onto an airplane and you see your old buddy Jack on the plane, do not, I repeat, do NOT yell across the plane "Hi Jack!".....

But it is still less than optimal to short-circuit your buddy's search for the
solution to his urgent frammistat problems...

Late hijacks are much preferable to early ones.  Most of the time, multiple answers/responses to the OP's questions/assertions have been offered, and sometimes the OP comes back with follow-on questions and there are more answers/responses.  Once this has followed it's course, later posts which wander off the course are really not a problem.  If the OP is still not satisfied, he should really come back and take up the reigns of his initial post and press it again.

OP = original poster

And this is what we've learned to expect from the "dreammaker", a question asked with an insistence of sincerity but then when it has been answered following the answer with a contradiction.

I believe the final line of your original post, dreammaker, was greatly disingenuous.    Wink

Yeah thats with that cheap cheese. Did you know Margarine like "Imperial" is one molecule away from paint. Mold wont ever grow on it. Butter and real cheese is the only way to go!

Ok, now that we all know what a hijack is.  I hope the OP is clear as well on the "true" meaning.......

To me anyway its ok to hijack or change directions in the "conversation" on the general board, but its more important to maintain the integrity of the original point on the tech board (assuming the topics are appropriately separated) which is a tall order it seems.

Another thing that goes along with that.  When you post a problem, people make suggestions and then you fix the problem....go back to the original post to show the fix.  DO NOT start a new thread, as the problem and the fix may be separated by pages of posts

The reason I say its more important to keep the topics straight on the tech board is, if someone starts with a question about the starter button and then the thread morphs into a fantastic fix for say the hydrolocking carbs and petcock, it might be harder to later search for that fix because one would probably not remember to look at starter button threads later on when they need hydrolock info.  Although the way search works, theoretically the results would "find" it regardless, its just simpler if the topics remain pure.

I know I have done it, probably we all have......its just laziness really, but we should try to keep it tight on the tech board, and have more fun on the general board IMHO.
