Yes, I love looking at some of those old Wings, makes me want to get my 1200 done but it takes $$'s to do it right. I'm getting there but taking it slow so it's done right. I don't like problems after I spend time building something.

Mine is also a Std., and strange for sure.....I was going to do the very same thing. Have a spare Valk swingarm and set of wheels...front and rear. Was also going to use the spare Valk forks I had along with a spare Valk set of triple trees. Then got to looking at what was involved making the swingarm fit so I could use the Valk rear wheel....too much time and $$. The front was OK and fit with some adaptation, but looked weird with a Valk front wheel that was larger than the 1200 rear. Decided to stay with the 1200 set up throughout. The 1200 s/a isn't wide enough for the Valk wheel with the rotor attached, the Valk s/a is too wide to fit the 1200 frame without spreading it....so quit messing with it and moved on.

I got this when the Valk and I parted company.  It's a good bike, 1984, 108000 miles.  Hoser

Wish I could find a set of those vented side covers just below the amber side reflector. They weren't on the bike or in the huge tub of parts that was taken off by the PO.

good thread for the early wings
http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/goldwing-owners-help-on-used-goldwings.904195/page-2
including below for the 1200. there is also a post about putting a car alternator on the bike and doing away with the stator altogether.

Some will stay stay away from this model due to the "stator issue". Read up on this - many think it wasn't the stator but the 3 prong plug under the left cover. On my 1985 - it was classicly melted into one gob. The procedure to cut this connection out - solder the connection in solid - takes maybe an hour. My bike was still functioning with the rotten plug, but the voltage output was low..12.2 After replacing the plug, the stator output is a perfect 13.8. On this topic - you are talking about 30 year old bikes - odds are that if there was a stator issue, it was repaired years ago. I would - if looking at one - always check the connection under the left cover as well as the voltage output at idle and at about 3,000rpm.

Yes CA, when I got the bike that plug was melted on one side and all the pins were corroded badly. I used the same method and got rid of the connector. I checked the stator condition before reinstalling the engine after replacing a piston and rod(swallowed a valve). Held my breath and fired it up, first thing I checked was the output and it was real good so breathed a bit easier. I have a spare stator if needed but don't really want to go that route if necessary.
